Did the friend promise it, or the book? And was it romance, or another genre? And if the latter, did said friend reasonably know that ship not happening would ruin it for you?

I'm asking because generally not of my recs (or those I receive) are ship based, also a ship that is not endgame can still be interesting.

If the nonbinary person was AFAB, they might well have considered it a lesbian relationship.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
And they'd be right.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
0/10 trolling

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
How is it trolling? In the same breath you'd probably say that he/him lesbians are valid despite it being an entire contradiction. And I personally DO know a lot of nonbinary people that consider themselves lesbians. Are they trolling? Are you?

ayrt

I personally would not say that, because to me, identifying as a woman is an important part of being a lesbian. (Not at all saying there's anything wrong with being nonbinary, but the definition of lesbian includes being a woman, and nonbinary people aren't women.)

i think you need to reexamine how you view nonbinary people & also just the sheer practicality of type your stance. nonbinary can't be lesbians because they're not women, but they also can't be heterosexual because neither men nor women are of the "opposite" gender to them. i guess they're allowed to be bisexuals? but what if they're exclusively attracted to men or women? demanding they come up with special new terms because you think they can't experience attraction to women like a lesbian seems to me like you're not ok with nonbinary people.

nayrt

But what's stopping AMAB nonbinary folks from calling themselves lesbians, then?

And on the flipside, what is the point of an AFAB transman calling himself a lesbian, when that would literally mean they prefer to still be viewed as a woman who loves women?

If the term means nothing, why have it at all?

NAYRT if a nonbinary person would consider themselves a lesbian, they can be a lesbian. If they don't, they're not. It's not that complicated.

what a perfectly good faith argument that i definitely should engage with :)

NAYRT

What contradiction? He/Him lesbians are women. Who use he/him pronouns. That's not a contradiction. Your pronouns aren't your gender, they're just the words you want to be talked about with.

The bizarro land in which clearly gendered pronouns say nothing about your gender only exists in fantasy.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
you clearly don't know as many lesbians as I do.

Ah yes the bizarro world known as...the entire recorded history of butchdom.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk, almost all people I know who identify as NB either also identify as lesbians or bisexual ( which is kinda funny considering I would would have ecpected them to be the first people to insist they're pansexual instead but oh well).

I’m just curious about this nonbinary character who romances a woman and lives. I can only think of two books where a nonbinary character gets a romance, and in one book the woman breaks up with them upon discovering they’re a “freak.”

Was the ff ship canon at one point but not endgame? If so, it could be a miscommunication. Some people assume "Contains Type of Ship" means Type of Ship is endgame while others assume it just means the ship happens in there at some point.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a good point actually.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks. I had a sort of similar situation in that a friend recommended a series that was "super gay" (m/m) according to her and there is...a clearly platonic friendship between two dudes who I'm not entirely sure have even been in a scene alone together. I mean, she never said there was canon romance, but I was expecting at least heavy subtext, and there's just...nothing. I guess to some people two guys not hating each other and occasionally being near each other is "super gay"?

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, yup, some people's slash goggles are on very tight.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
In this community, more people have anti-slash goggles. Two guys with real chemistry or sometimes guys who are CANON are really just the product of delusional fangirls' brains.

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
See above point about slash goggles buckled on tight...

I personally love to keep them welded straight to my face- wont miss a beat that way!

(Anonymous) 2022-07-14 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be pissed if they killed off half my ship that I thought was promised to be endgame or canon based on the rec- but I definitely think it's more than a bit much to no longer trust your friend over one bad rec. That's just taking it wayy too personally.
