Neither are pumpkins, spiders, cobwebs, black cats, graveyards, or many other things considered part of Hallowe'en.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
True. Though tbf, Jack O' Lanterns are supposed to ward off evil/spirits, and black cats were long associated with the devil.

I really have no feelings on whether aliens count or not.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Except originally they were carved from root veg like turnips, not pumpkins.

I mean... graveyards definitely have connections with the supernatural. As do black cats.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a bizarre response tbh

Pumpkins are associated with jack o'lanterns which are associated with the supernatural. Spiders and cobwebs are associated with abandoned dwelling places which are associated with the supernatural. And saying that black cats and graveyards aren't associated with the supernatural...... not sure what to say to that honestly

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Graveyards is the only thing you're accurate about.

'The Supernatural ' as we know it is a much later conceit than Halloween, which has its roots in Samhain. Black cats in particular is as late as the witch burnings.

Hmmm - In order you've got spirit wards, magic/superstition, magic/superstition, witches' familiars/magic/superstition, spirits/superstition/magic... that's all kind of supernatural.

And aliens are arguably cryptids, which sit firmly on the natural/supernatural fence.

You could also argue that gatekeeping Halloween is especially ridiculous and that it's pretty damn easy to block tags if it bothers OP that much.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's definitely people that argue that aliens are magic, even if it's not the most common view. But then again there's also that one guy that claims Bigfoot is an alien and also some kind of interdimensional psychic, and I definitely wouldn't include Bigfoot as Halloween-y.

Much to consider.

That’s just untrue. Are you an alien fan trying to clapback at OP?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

It’s fine if you are, I don’t think they’re entirely correct. But reacting to someone being wrong while attempting to gatekeep something by being wrong while attempting to gatekeep something doesn’t seem like the best response.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
pumpkins were a replacement of turnips from the original tradition

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And turnips are genuinely terrifying.

idk, i think they operate a similar existential space. there are plenty of people who talk about aliens like people talk(ed) about fairies.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, yeah, this is absolutely mondo true. there's a very direct continuity between spiritualism and UFO beliefs (which, among other things, is the reason that UFO mythology and New Age mysticism are such a natural fit - they're both part of the same broad movement)

but i think, while it's a very similar *existential* space, aliens do often have a very different tone and aesthetic flavor compared to classic Halloween things and maybe that ultimately matters more

Aliens are perfectly fine for Halloween, so long as they're Halloween-coloured. So the green ones are certainly in.

Also, they're not actually YOUR Halloween hashtags.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Never thought I'd see the day when someone would gatekeep Halloween but here we are.

There are horror movies about aliens, so they count.

You know what, OP? I'm going to agree with you.

I, personally don't find aliens to be Halloween-y. I don't care emuch if someone else does, but they fall solidly into the Sci Fi category with its own creep factor. Halloween to me falls more into the terrestrial/spiritual bag for me. It's about the veils between our world and the next/realms thinning. It's possible aliens could be interdimensional as well, but they personally don't quite fit it for me. But to each their own.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
They're right on the line for me. They're not Halloween-y enough for me to want to watch alien movies for Halloween, but they're Halloween-y enough that I still have a couple of alien-related songs on my Halloween music mix.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'd never really thought about this before you brought it up, but I don't agree. Made-up creepy stories about imaginary* beings seem to fit right in with the Halloween spirit.

*I believe that there is life on other planets, just given the sheer number that can support life that have to be out there. But do I believe there is any truth to any 'alien encounters' on Earth? Nope.
