Neither are pumpkins, spiders, cobwebs, black cats, graveyards, or many other things considered part of Hallowe'en.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
True. Though tbf, Jack O' Lanterns are supposed to ward off evil/spirits, and black cats were long associated with the devil.

I really have no feelings on whether aliens count or not.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Except originally they were carved from root veg like turnips, not pumpkins.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Only because Europe didn't have pumpkins. As soon as the Scots and Irish landed in America, they shifted to the easier to carve products almost immediately.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean... graveyards definitely have connections with the supernatural. As do black cats.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a bizarre response tbh

Pumpkins are associated with jack o'lanterns which are associated with the supernatural. Spiders and cobwebs are associated with abandoned dwelling places which are associated with the supernatural. And saying that black cats and graveyards aren't associated with the supernatural...... not sure what to say to that honestly

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Graveyards is the only thing you're accurate about.

'The Supernatural ' as we know it is a much later conceit than Halloween, which has its roots in Samhain. Black cats in particular is as late as the witch burnings.

What does that have to do with the point at hand

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the problem might be that you're using a bespoke definition of "The Supernatural" that no one else knows or necessarily agrees with.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh... No.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
well, explain, then

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm - In order you've got spirit wards, magic/superstition, magic/superstition, witches' familiars/magic/superstition, spirits/superstition/magic... that's all kind of supernatural.

And aliens are arguably cryptids, which sit firmly on the natural/supernatural fence.

You could also argue that gatekeeping Halloween is especially ridiculous and that it's pretty damn easy to block tags if it bothers OP that much.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's definitely people that argue that aliens are magic, even if it's not the most common view. But then again there's also that one guy that claims Bigfoot is an alien and also some kind of interdimensional psychic, and I definitely wouldn't include Bigfoot as Halloween-y.

Much to consider.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the thing with cryptids. Jersey Devil's arguably Halloweeny. Bigfoot less so, although psychics can be Halloweeny, so a psychic bigfoot might count. Also, "Bigfoot Tangina Barrons" would be an awesome Halloween costume.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Where does Mothman fall on this scale? He seems like the most Halloweeny of the American cryptids to me

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I would labels the ends Mystical/Monstrous and Pseudo-scientific, with Mothman near the left end and Bigfoot near the right, and the Jersey Devil somewhere between Mothman and the center. Even though they're not a cryptid, per se, aliens make sense to the right of Bigfoot, which is why I agree that they aren't very Spooky.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Mothman can fall on me any time he likes.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s just untrue. Are you an alien fan trying to clapback at OP?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

It’s fine if you are, I don’t think they’re entirely correct. But reacting to someone being wrong while attempting to gatekeep something by being wrong while attempting to gatekeep something doesn’t seem like the best response.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
pumpkins were a replacement of turnips from the original tradition

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And turnips are genuinely terrifying.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
When I see turnips, I think of Baldrick.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes!

Turnips always make me think of Baldrick.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.
