I agree. But just think, if they had told us everyone's favorite songs, we wouldn't have had the opportunity to write fanfiction about everyone's favorite songs.

I remember loving that game! I hadn't thought about it in years.

That song will forever make me start crying now.

I get this. When I'm in an extended state of depression or anxiety I can't really enjoy anything or connect with people enjoying anything, so I hide under the covers for months at a time.

I kinda feel you and I sorta blame this on the fact that a lot of Fincher directed films feel very naturalistic (even with Sorkin writing) that I think oscar voters feel like the actors are doing "less". Like if you look at which of his films have gotten acting nods it's either for some degree of transformation (GWTDT and Gone Girl) or some degree of imitation (Mank).

Well if you want to deny yourself some of the greatest modern horror, you stick to your guns OP.

Was Doc Robotnik as good as I think he'd be?

Maybe Midnight Mass is the place to start. It's not an adaptation of anything and has some very original turns.

I remember being obsessed with this film at the time because I was (still am) obsessed with haunted house stories but...it really is a bad film and a bad adaption. I have watched it a couple of times since for the nostalgia value so can understand it being a guilty pleasure of yours.

The recent TV show, though only very very loosely connected to the novel, hits all my haunted house buttons a lot better. With ghost stories less is always more when it comes to special effects.

So, I don't think you'll like Flanagan's stuff if you're actually attached to the works they're "adapted" or inspired from. He doesn't adapt straight (although I haven't watched or read Gerald's Game so I can't speak to that in particular, and Midnight Mass is him adapting himself lmao). But if you want something with the same vibes but, frankly, different but also interesting themes, he's actually good to try OP. Not because it's something you already know, but because it's not.

Like I think a lot of people were sorta disappointed in Hill House because it has zero of Jackson's themes about women imo, but the family aspect Flanagan imputed was very compelling to me. But it's not the Haunting of Hill House as jackson wrote it at all and so if you're expecting that....well yeah you're not going to like it and your friends should really be warning you.

I still love the song but I listen to the radio when I work from home and there was a period earlier this year where I'd sigh and think "ffs AGAIN?" any time I heard the intro because it felt like every hour at one point!

I do wish people'd start playing Cloudbusting more in addition to Running Up That Hill because it's a great song too. Actually I think it's better.

They're not really adaptions, more loosely themed with callbacks to the source material. But you do you anon, it's annoying when people almost try to force you to watch something you have made clear you have no interest in watching.

Personally I loved Hill House and found Bly distinctly "ok" - I'd say Bly was closer to an adaption of those two because it kept more obvious aspects such as the two children being possessed by the ghosts. Still changes a lot and references/adapts a lot of James's other works in a couple of episodes, so would probably annoy you even more!

Midnight Mass is an original work and very good but it's very slow burn with a lot of monologuing (which I struggled with in a couple of places, people are taking *forever* to say anything.) Also it does still kinda borrow from the typical themes you find in horror works that reference vampires and/or religion.

Fist fight with OP of #10?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-29 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm fine with having it stuck in my head for weeks, personally. Though my favourite Kate Bush song will always be Wuthering Heights.

I suppose the one good thing to come out of Running Up That Hill overexposure is that a lot of people have discovered even more Kate Bush and moved on/acquired new favourites of hers!

He is such a good actor

I suppose I should be glad that all I've seen on my feed is people obnoxiously spamming fanart, especially of the "had they lived and grown up" variety. I mean it's cute art and a nice AU idea, but there's someone I follow who talked about nothing else for weeks!

And you know what? Good for him

Still funny though

What counts as a cozy? Where do the Miss Marple stories fit on the scale, for instance?

The Joan Hickson TV Miss Marples were wonderful. The more recent adaptations were useless.

I gave up trying when they went after Hannibal. Said Hannigram was pedophilia because of the ten year age gap - between a 40 year old and a 50 year old...

(Anonymous) 2022-10-29 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you really think they’re always bad? I think some are quite good, even sometimes (*gasp!*) better than the books.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-29 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
jfc wtf can someone gather these fuckers up and drop them on Anthrax Island?

SA

Not hate on OP for not liking the TV adaptations of course. Even when they’re good as shows, they don’t necessarily scratch the same itch as the books.
