What's going on with twitter?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who never had an account but swings by to check on a couple favorite authors sometimes, I know Musk bought twitter, tried to ban everyone making fun of him and fire everyone who pissed him off, so I'm assuming the site is now held together with spit, string, and paperclips because every sane employee who could afford to bail backflipped out with both middle fingers extended.

But did something specifically ridiculous happen today? The site still loads, but some people are talking about it collapsing in a matter of minutes.

Also if people just want to beat up on Elon/post jokes about the thinskinned asshole emerald mine heir, please do.

He's wanting to make it a paywalled site, algorithm suppresses anyone without Blue, etc.

Oh, strap in because this gets insane quick. Here is the vastly simplified version though:

Musk tweeted something stupid while high, but that stupid was a legally binding offer and Twitter took him seriously because it was more money than they were ever going to get from someone sober. Pulling out would have cost him a fortune, and his ego wouldn't let him anyway, so he was forced to buy it. Buuuuuut, instead of doing the sensible thing and liquidating enough of his stock wealth to buy it outright, he got a load of loans, so that was a dumb choice to do his dumb thing, and he had no clear idea what to do except first try and make a quick cash grab to generate enough money to pay off his debts so he could dump it quick, but that failed and left him deeper in debt. Then he got mad and started trying to control and punish all the people making fun of him, which just made things worse as far as advertisers pulling out, increasing his debt.

Then he tried to cut costs by firing a bunch of people, and unfortunately some of those he really needed and was forced to try and get them to comeback after being summarily fired. And it turned out that some of the people he fired were the ones keeping track of a bunch of legal restrictions on Twitter due to FTC plea bargaining, the terms of which his proposed changes violate, so now he is looking at a genuine and for real, yes-jail time, prosecution. And there is no way he can get his money back. So Twitter has gone from a more or less, if only barely, profitable company to an unsupportable wreck in just a couple of weeks through all the dumb stuff done in the dumbest ways.

Oh, and because of the way he structured the loans to finance it, he's gonna have to sell so much stock in Tesla and Space X that he might tank them too, causing the stock price to dip so low that both of those companies declare bankruptcy, so the shareholders of those are mad at him too. It isn't the most likely outcome, but there is a non-zero chance that he might end up actually for real, not the usual billionaire version but for reals-version, actually broke and bankrupt himself too.

And his backers, who all gave him unsecured loans will definitely end up losing their money no matter the outcome. Some of those are gullible true believers, some of those are people caught up in the hype who don't really deserve to lose everything, and some are Russian and Saudi Oligarchs who are gonna want his head for this. And they might be being literal about that last bit.

Musk told Twitter workers, the ones he didn't fire, that unless they all work 100 work weeks then Twitter is facing bankruptcy. The soon to be ex-workers said they were fine with that. So, um, yeah.

Also, to answer the question about what happened today - Elon said the site might run out of money and have to declare bankruptcy, and also a bunch of senior safety / legal / compliance people resigned, and the FTC said they were closely monitoring in case Elon did anything shitty which would open Twitter up to potentially massive fines

In addition to the lolwtf mentioned below, the last couple of days have been particularly disastrous and stupid because:

You know those blue checkmarks by people's names, to prove they're "verified" as the person they actually claim to be? This has been used in the past for politicians, celebrities, official brand accounts. Stuff like that.

Well, Musky thought he could make Twitter profitable by charging $20 a month for blue checkmarks which would boost visibility in the algorithm and so on. "To reduce scams and trolls." Notable blue-checked people (most famously Stephen King) were like "uh, no, I'm not paying $20 for something like that." (To Stephen King, Musk replied like "How does $8 sound?" Seriously. Lol.)

So he rolled this out anyway, charging $8 a month. Immediately, the trolls and the scams TOOK OVER blue-check Twitter. A fake Nintendo account with a blue check is posting obscenity and just bad taste stuff, the real Nintendo account with a blue check is being overwhelmed by complaints. A pharmaceutical company just had to put out a statement that their real Twitter account is X, and that account Y that just tweeted they're now making insulin free to everyone is an imposter. (Unfortunately.) We have "George W. Bush" and "Tony Blair" gleefully reminiscing about how much fun it was to kill Iraqis, both with blue checks.

And this is just a SMALL PORTION of the confusion that has ensued in the less than 48 hours that people could pay for blue checks. Brands are furious, ad buyers are fleeing, apparently what was left of Twitter's legal team also was like "yeah no, I can't defend this" and quit from what I last heard.

The crazy thing about all of this

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
All of this is completely unnecessary. It's a total unforced error. Elon Musk just decided for no reason at all to set a bunch of money on fire

Musk could literally have just bought Twitter at a more reasonable valuation so he didn't have to take on so much debt and increased cash flow by firing some employees and adding a subscription option that didn't conflict with verification. Twitter was already a successful social media network that was making back its costs! It didn't need dramatic changes! He could have just put someone else in charge and mostly let them keep doing what they were doing, and he would have been the owner of one of the most important parts of the global information ecosystem and it would have been fine for him.

Instead he decided to alienate the entire user base, fire literally everyone, and drive the site into the ground.

Cocaine's a hell of a drug.

I bought two blue check marks for my tumblr account, and it give me 8$ worth of joy every time I see them.

So I just don't understand how Twitter sucks so hard. Have they tried letting folks blaze pictures of horse lawyers? Rainbow checkmarks? Crabs? Maybe they need to get out there and sell some shoelaces.

Mine's about tv shows/movies that flog that most boring and annoying of 'crime' tropes, the 'victim (99.9% women) or character (80%women) must speak to serial killer to get info on more victims and said sk said gross things to them and 50/50 gives them any info'.

I had a pretty incredible day by my standards, so really all I can complain about other than the health stuff I would complain about every day is:

1: Darnit in ACNH why can't you "show off" food/fish/bugs in camera mode? I wanted a close-up of my character holding a plate of cookies, but they put it away if I go into camera mode so all I can do is a screencap at the usual angles/distance.

2: One of my fave characters at the moment has a birthday tomorrow - or today in Japan so my Twitter feed is full of adorable art of him already <3 - and I can't muster up the spoons to do anything for it after such a long day.

Related to your vent, I'd like more variety in crime shows and books. I feel like half the crime shows or novels that I see or read in the US start with a pretty white girl running frantically through a forest and then in the next scene her parents are looking for her. I'd like a little more exploration of different demographics. I know teenage girls are seen as more vulnerable but it's a) boring and b) makes girls look helpless.

Re: Petty vent....

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I think of show creators and movie directors in promotion mode for their upcoming shows/seasons and movies as politicians making campaign promises. Some things are deliberate misrepresentations; some things are misleading; and some things I believe they actually want to do, but I know they can’t do all of them, so they have to know that. And it’s almost always presented as concrete, not that this is a point in their plan and could change as the whole thing evolves.

But what I hate the most are the outright lies. The ones after it’s already been written and filmed. You know the ones I mean: ‘No, that character is totally and completely dead. They are not coming back.’; ‘No, it has nothing to do with that character from the original thing.’; and ‘We stuck close to the thing it was based on.’. And just why? As soon as it premieres, people will know, and they will dislike you for the lie, even if they like what happens.

In regard to the crime trope, I feel like that at least has some foundation in real life (for law enforcement anyway), though I would say it's probably 90% men that actually talk to them. I would be surprised if they got useful information even 50% of the time, but some serial killers do seem to talk - I think they got a lot of information from the Green River Killer and BTK. Ted Bundy also talked a lot, but there was a fair amount of bullshit there. I actually feel like he is probably the reason the trope is so prevalent, because people talked to him so many times about his crimes and the crimes of others.

Any ace people out here?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm starting to wonder if I'm asexual. It's very rare for me to feel sexual attraction to someone IRL (really only once). In fantasy (say fic) it's quite different and I am multi fandom person never one fandom with its characters is never enough. Anyway. Finally kissed someone for the first time and all I could think was how strange it was. Can't tell if it's just weird because I've never experienced it before or if I just could do without humans in this sense.
