Why are they so popular? I really don't understand the appeal at all

Nostalgia for those that went and/or read a lot of books about it and wished they could go?

Easy way to get a bunch of teens together with minimal adult supervision?

Too many horror movies?

I never much got it, either, and I never went to summer camp. I did read a few books where the characters did, and it sounded okay, but still.... Not a favorite trope.

None of my fandoms are doing summer camp AUs and now I'm kinda sad about it.

Fucking seconded! I never went to summer camp, and even though I was an awkward, insecure late bloomer who probably would've struggled to fit in if I had gone, I still pine for the quintessential summer camp experience with a burning intensity.

My current ship is an age gap ship, so it wouldn't really work with a summer camp AU...unless it was a late-teens summer camp, and the older character was one of the grown-up staff or something (has potential honestly). But I have other ships that would adapt to the whole summer camp context more easily, and now I want those fics darn it.

I never got to go to summer camp (we were poor), but I can understand the appeal and why summer camp AUs are popular. I'd say its because that setting provides a lot of opportunities for a lot of plot bunnies/points like meet-cutes, roommate or bunkmate situations, counselors who buddy around with each other, shenanigans that ensue when campers get together, etc. There are camps devoted to specific activities like swimming or horse riding, there are cooking camps and there are chess and literature camps too, so anything the author might be interested in could be worked into a story featuring a summer camp.

tbh I'm American, and I am familiar with the concepts here, I just don't get what's so compelling about them as an AU construct
