Hmm, maybe in that version, IDK.

All I know is Darcy totally earned his rejection in the BBC version. Most ladies I know wouldn't be all "oh you think I am tolerable except for my crude family? SO ROMANTIC, LET'S GET MARRIED" you know? So I am on Elizabeth's side for that one. Anyway it all works out in the end :)

Is the movie different from the book? Why's it selfish to turn down a marriage proposal, especially one presented as a huge sacrifice for the other person because of your social status?

Oh wait, that's Mr. Collins? Yeah, I can't see that as much selfish either.

[identity profile] sessile29.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't the whole point of damn book was "marry someone you love and if he happens to be filthy rich, all the better"? This secret does not compute.

But I would suppose that if someone like Elizabeth actually did something like that during that time, the epithet "selfish cow" would have certainly been leveled at her. Thank God we don't live in those times, eh?

[identity profile] anthraxpretzels.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
lmfao oh Collins

[identity profile] cjk1701.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you read the book? The reasons are quite clearly laid out why she refused the first two proposals to come her way.

I'd say that she had good reasons to deny him and that I don't blame her. That said, yes, given the society and the fact that it could've been her one chance to save her family from destitution, I think it was a bit selfish of her.

Then again, it's a romance novel all about the power of love and following your heart, yadayada, so...

Wait, wait. Because she wasn't in love with him, and he pretty much implied he was lowering his standards to marry her, she's the one who should feel bad?

Earth logic, OP. Do you have it?

Really? I don't think it's that selfish to turn down someone who gets excited about stairs and shelves...

Yes, like other people have said, Jane Austen does address the fundamentals of a happy marriage quite clearly in the book - I don't really see how Elizabeth could be considered selfish in entering a marriage in which she didn't love the other man and couldn't live a totally happy life. True, it might have been somewhat practise then, but when comparing it to say, Bingley and Jane's marriage, it can hardly be considered selfish that she turned him down.

In any case, the fact that Charlotte and Mr Collins don't seem to be entirely happy (even though Charlotte says something along the lines of "I find myself quite content with the situation,") in their marriage should illustrate that marrying simply for financial reasons is "wrong".

Phew, I need some sleep.

Okay, let's say she was. Buy if she had married him just because it was convenient for her family despite not loving him, HER WHOLE FAMILY'd have been selfish. So from a mathematical stand point, she did the right thing by preventing her whole family from becoming horrible human beings :DDDDD

[identity profile] postal152.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm torn on this, actually, because of the time period this was set in, and as someone else mentioned, she could have been the one to save her family from destitution by accepting. But she did have a lot of sisters who were bound to get married.

I won't say "you missed the point of the book" because sometimes you just disagree with the point of a book, and I can understand that. Personally, though, Mr. Collins gives me the heebie jeebies, and I would have probably not been able to go through with marrying him.

Um. Why? She was a bit harsh with him, but she shouldn't have to marry someone she doesn't even like. Sadly, many if not most women of that era had to. :(

Wait... what?

(Anonymous) 2009-05-14 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
If you can't be selfish when rejecting proposals, when the hell can you be selfish? Is not a woman entitled to live her own life the way she would like to? Or does she exist only to make some man happy? Hmm...I wonder.

[identity profile] ryahhime.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see why she would be. Her mother thought she was selfish for refusing him because Mr. Collins could financially provide for the family. Elizabeth held out for Darcy, who was much better off financially than Mr. Collins. He also didn't like her for her personality. If he'd truly been in love with her, then maybe, but the fact was he never saw her expressing herself and they certainly never interacted much the way Elizabeth and Darcy did. It's not like she was being selfish for turning down his true love. Elizabeth was pretty much holding out for personal affection toward a man instead of his rank or dowry, and I honestly can't see how that's more selfish than independent.

WHAT? Did the newer movie version make him too nice or something?! The BBC version and the book version (and heck, even the Bride and Prejudice version) is CLEARLY very skeevy at best and kinda a scumbag at worst. (Not as bad as Wickam, but...well. It's hard to be THAT bad.)

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Barring TERRIBLY exceptional circumstances, no one is selfish for not accepting a proposal. Ever.

[identity profile] ladililn.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if it is selfish of her...you don't think a woman has the right to be selfish when it comes to marrying someone she doesn't love? I seriously doubt you would have accepted in that situation, OP.

[identity profile] signifies.livejournal.com 2009-05-14 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That was the whole point, genius. Pride and Prejudice.

(wow, no one? Really?)

ha, I luff him. I mean, I´m all Lizzie/Darcy, but he is so cute. I might have some issues tough, because my favorite in pirates of the Carribean is the comdore, and in Shrek I loooooove Charming.

OP, you are doing it wrong. Also, are you a guy? I think your secret would make a lot more sense (but be equally stupid) if you are.
