Fandom Talk/Vent?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Because I've got some thoughts lol

Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?

Half talk/half vent here?

I must admit the more I hear one of my favorite YouTubers say he has a tendency to just want to work all the time the more I wonder if he's working a lot to avoid something.

Could be?...could be a constant search for perfection, or feeling like if he's not being productive, he's a waste of space... there's countless reasons. And some people just like to keep busy. Don't know the YouTuber, but hopefully they're okay (inside).

This YouTuber is shifting to longer form content partly because more frequent videos were starting to burn him out. The type of work he does for longer form content (block chain research, interviews, even a recent small scale sting operation) is what he seems to want to work on all the time. That could possibly be perfection, but given how his long-form work often thrusts him into the (national) spotlight (which then really stresses him out), I'd be surprised if the pursuit of perfection is the whole reason for his workaholic bent.

Fandom: legend of Korra

It's me, the anon who finished avatar and was asking for recs.

So I've started watching this series just accepting it and taking it as a whole new/entirely different show (the vibe is vastly different than the first and I really enjoyed the first -- there is something I will make a secret about though....).

And can I just say...Mako is getting on my nerves! Okay, good looking male lead, okay breaks up with his first gf for the girl he "couldn't stand" etc etc. Anyway, I'm pissed (and on S2), and am at the point where Mako becomes a cop (I immediately knew where this was going. He's annoying me like Dick Grayson annoys me. Anytime they become a cop, it always goes this way -- yes, hyperbole). Can someone PLEASE explain to me how this full of shit guy, ugh can't stand him right now -- can't go behind the back of the superior authority and help his girlfriend out by literally just keeping his mouth shut BUT he'll go behind his own superior's back to make his case/help his ex. Who's coming to him with a similar story (okay, kind of different but still -- both of their families/legacies are on the line). FULL OF SHIT. this is why he ends up with neither of them. Little turd. Ugh. Nevermind the constant juxtaposition between Asami who was all sweet and what not with him (good on her for breaking up with him tbh) and Korra who argues with him far more frequently than Asami was shown to. And I'll admit I wanted Mako x Korra (I know how it ends of course, and I'm glad bc they're both cool characters) but ugh. This guy.

I have no favorites in this show. Last show I liked all the characters, with Sokka and Uncle Iroh being my favorites. But this show. Smh.

Just had to vent this lol.

"Mako is the worst" is the most popular opinion in the whole fandom.

I had no idea! But lol it makes total sense!

Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?

Asami doesn't stay a cool character after the first season. She becomes completely useless and irrelevant. She was my favorite character in season 1, and I wish they'd just had her leave the show and say she was doing her own thing somewhere else than keep her around to do nothing.

That's disappointing :(

I thought she'd become a version or Tony Stark or somehow unlock some fire bending or soekthing.

Oh dear. I'm one of the people who said that season 2 sucked but to give LOK a watch if you were interested, and now I'm feeling bad, whoops! Admittedly I don't think that the core cast of LOK was as interesting as ATLA, and that a lot of questionable plot decisions happened because showrunners Bryke didn't have nearly the amount of editors that they had in ATLA. Season 2 is going to succccckkkk, but hopefully you still find the general world interesting?

Season 3 does return to form in terms of exploring the interesting connotations of its eastern spirituality setting, and season 4 focuses on politics. There will be questionable things along the way, so I don't blame you for tapping out at any point.

Thank you for the update on how the watch is going!

Thanks for the rev and there's no need to feel bad at all!

I did not heed the warning lol I did go into LOK hoping for something sweet, some sort of continuation, but I knew not to expect that. And half the time I was wondering if the people who made the show also made the last one? Because tonally it was different as well (i think someone had mentioned it was more "mature", which makes sense as the cast is older than Team Avatar 1, but....idk. the pacing is a lot quicker, I don't feel like I'm getting the same (if any character growth) for any of them. Even Korra -- like it's more of a perfunctory thing, ya know?

The world building is interesting, Varrick is interesting and silly (gives me Shakespearean jester lite) . I'm gonna keep watching but man I'm gonna have cleanse my palate. The cast fir the live action Avatar tv show remake dies have me excited for it. It seems like solid casting choices.

My only fandom vent is my frustration at basically completing a fic and writing the ending so it's not stupid, awful or abrupt. I'm frustrated because it's a damn short fic (okay, roughly 4000 words) I've been holding onto for months and I just want to finish the damn thing already and post it so I can move on to something else.

Just move onto something else and/or juggle, you say? Nope. I'm getting very bad at that lately, considering the number of unposted WIPs of various word counts I've amassed in recent years.

Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Do you feel that maybe posting it with your not preferred ending and later coming back to do a rewrite of the end would take some of the pressure/frustration off? Maybe allow you to eventually come up with an ending you actually like?

I ask as someone who's read fic where the authors sometimes go back and re write a chapter (or five) a fair amount of time later because they were finally able to come up with something that really fit (even if it was months or weeks or years later). As a reader it's only bothered me if I didn't save a previous version, but overall, I've tended to not mind and enjoy the revision. As a writer, I get wanting to out something out there that's...good, that I'm pleased it carries my name? That I'm satisfied with, so I get the hesitation.

Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer the ending, I'm just having a hell of a time not making it sound like garbage. I'd also prefer not to have to go back to it - again, I realize that's my problem and it's partly due to the fear of getting stuck with one more WIP.

Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been there. I tend to do 2 things
1)Force myself to sit down and finish the damn thing, know that not everything I create will be to my satisfaction. Sometimes, it's better to finish a fic and post it to get it out of your WIP zone rather than agonize over how bad/incomplete it is. A few years ago I watched a Dan Olsen/Folding Ideas video and he talked about a project he did where the end result wasn't to his satisfaction but he completed it. And that was the whole purpose of the project. Complete the project by THIS date. In the long run, it will do you more good to complete a not-so-great project and move onto another project rather than get slowed down by the worries of perfection/"doing it right".
2)Take a break from said fic by not writing for at least 1 day. In the meantime, I am pulling up things that inspired me to write the fic (songs, fan vids/art, etc). I spend some time ruminating on the story and then after a day or 2 I either go to end and fix up or re-read the fic and adjust accordingly.

One of the first fics I wrote had 4 chapters and I wrote like 3 different last chapters. The first 2 drafts was setup as I imagined the original ending to be. But something felt lacking. I took a couple days away from my fic, returned to it and changed up a lot of the scenario to find the ending I wanted. But it felt better, because I connected a lot of the previous events back to the last chapter. An exercise that made me not afraid to make drastic changes to an ending I kept holding onto.
Good luck writing nonny!

Thanks. Honestly, I've done both with mixed results in the past. I think I just need to push through it, because the story itself is complete. I'm just not satisfied with how the ending's worded at the moment.

Yeah, totally been there before too! I think taking a break from the actual words can do you good. Reset your mind, and hopefully after a few days you can come back and find a way to complete it for publishing.

Nothing too articulate from me. I just watched Stephanie Sterling's video on Hogwards Legacy and I'm gutted.
As always they're the only "content creator" whose integrity I trust 100%.

On a positive note: their tits on the new video are truly fantastic. That corset is pure porn.

I'm not being able to make sense of your comment. You watched someone talk about a video game and ... it was apparently a terrible experience. Who is this person? Are you unhappy with them?

Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry I was not making sense. I'm particularly tired tonight.

I watched a video from a YouTuber i like very very much, one that talks about the game industry as a whole and has been doing it for years. They're particularly famous about denouncing bad industry practises and human rights' violations or scandals in some companies.
This time they talked about something that emotionally drained me. It has to do with JKR and transphobia and allies. It's a very good video (you can agree or not with them, but the script is very good) that I will link here if anyone wants to see it: https://youtube.com/watch?v=uNKyQVsgKLg

I just don't get why more people just wait and pirate a videogame if they really want to play it but it has the name of a reprehensible person attached to it. Why.

Oh, I see. Thanks for explaining. I might go look at that.

Hope you feel better, anon.

Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?

Because pirating a videogame is not as easy as pirating a movie, and can get very expensive on the legal side very fast if you're not careful. People don't want to risk jail time for not hurting some people's feelings.

I’m not sure why you would want to play Harry Potter and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion anyway, but paying premium prices to do so is especially sketchy.

Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Because pirating the game is just as bad as paying for it since JKR already has Fuck You money and uses the continuing popularity of HP as a self esteem boost. And pirating the game means you want to play the game, and you shouldn't want to play the game because it's a Bad Wrong game. Which, like, might keep some people away from it but if all sins are equally bad I'm not going to feel any worse about buying it than I am about wanting to play it.

Not until it goes on sale on steam and all the bugs are worked out in a year or two but still.

I've been following this person for years, we even met IRL, but I read yesterday how they are going to buy HP game. It was the last straw apparently. They have been annoying me for some time, but this thing is just a nope from me. But I am sad now
