Totally agree with all of this: there's a big difference between 'fic about a character dealing with a thing that clearly aligns with specificidentitylabel' and 'fic about specificidentitylabel through the paper-thin guise of a character'.

I believe the term is "issuefic" (i.e., a fic that is more about a specific issue, identity, etc, than it is about anything else).

I think the Internet is bleeding into RL, much more than I would like. Part of it was the corona mess, with everyone being trapped in their homes and desperate for distraction, and the Interwebs were Right There. Everyone got used to being online a lot, plus smart phones fix it so accessing the Internet is much easier and more convenient than it used to be.

Ugggghhh, expensive subcultures that gatekeep like this are the worst, since it ends up boiling down to a pissing contest over how much dispisable income you have. And that just kills the joy for casuals.

subthread OP

I saw it, and it was everything I want out of a Marvel movie, fun, entertaining, had very likable characters and a great villain.

Not yet. Too much going on this weekend, going to see it next weekend. I did read spoilers, though, and it sounds awesome. I know the reviews are mixed, but I think that's mostly due to MCU fatigue and reviewers wanting a smaller-scale movie similar to the first two Ant Man movies, which this one was never going to be.

OK, thanks! Will do.

Not seen it yet, but the reviews are bad, so I'll almost certainly love it when I do. I don't even do it on purpose to be contrary or ironic, I genuinely seem to like the movies the critics and rest of fandom hate. I actually hate this about myself. I wish I was on the same page as fandom rather than always being on the outside of it.

Unless I need to have detailed technical discussions, I communicate a lot at work with meme gifs. Luckily, I have a boss and the technology to support this (I also WFH 100%). I do end up having to teach one of my co-workers what most of the memes mean, though. She literally did not understand "Sure, Jan".

I don't feel this is much of a change for me personally at all. My friends at school all used to use movie quotes as shorthand in communication, and now we just get those references from the internet instead. It actually seems to make it a bit more universal.

Probably says a lot more about my experience of the informality of the modern workplace than it does about internet/RL barriers.

... I don't think classy gentlemen really drink their tea with their pinky finger up. I can totally RDJ doing that for a laugh, though.

For what it's worth, I saw it yesterday and enjoyed it a lot. I think a lot of the critics are either not from this solar system, or they just hate fun.

Everything I've heard from people who've seen it has been mixed-to-negative and I'm iffy on MCU at the best of times so I almost certainly will not see it

There is little functional divide between online life and offline life these days, the line had been pretty blurred for the last few years anyway but the pandemic was the final straw on that one. Me? I'd roll it back to the 56k modem being state of the art days, if I could. Hell, I'd go back to pre-31st August 1993 days if I had the chance.

I'm not too worried. I often don't agree with reviewers, and if I find something enjoyable that's all I care about. I loved Eternals, which was the worst reviewed of the MCU movies.

I'm also not an expert, but some of the data suggests there would be about the same risk of fire/explosion as there is for a car running on gasoline.

Ironically, that would mean significantly less fire risk in a hydrogen-fueled car than in a Tesla.

Yeah, but most of them were already on team hater and want it to suck to the point where they would willingly ignore any positives anyway. I will never understand this desire to tear stuff down for the sake of tearing it down that some folks seem to have.

How do you know that the people whose opinions I've seen are on "team hater"? You don't know whose opinions I've seen.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
They wanted to write a story that would fit better on fictionmania or shifti, but didn't want to admit to being a fictionmania or shifti type of writer.

Interesting, thank you! I do agree with anon up thread that ideally the goal would be better transit, but I also know that capitalism rules a lot and there isn't the same money grab with great public transit as there is with encouraging private vehicle ownership.

You're really that convinced that everyone who dislikes a given Marvel movie is just a hater? It's not possible that people reasonably dislike the movie? You're going to just say that a bunch of people who you don't know at all must just be haters? Ridiculous

No public transport system, short of a Star Trek style transporter, will ever be able to provide the same level of flexibility and personal freedom that cars will. It simply is not possible, the spoke and hub vs point to point nature of the two systems means that public transport will always be second best. So the best thing is to make cars as clean and green as is possible.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
My understanding is

- Lithium ion batteries have captured the market because they're the type of battery the largest amount of people understand. There are various different battery technologies (not just hydrogen fuel) that you can argue have been sidelined for investment in compatibility with lithoum ion batteries.

- However, many of those battery technologies, including hydrogen fuel, are not mature enough for the market. Lithium ion was mature and ready to go.

- At some point one clean technology has to be chosen over another, because having competing fuel infrastructure is super inefficient and will end badly for the consumer/ lead to more people staying with ICE cars in the long run because of fuel reliability (think of it like the issue of vhs vs betamax or blue ray vs high definition discs, but on a national infrastructure level where the players were communal pump stations).

- Lithium ion has its problems but is still better than ICE, and building the electric car national fuelling infrastructure will allow/incentivise the development/maturing of other cleaner electric batteries that are compatible with it.

- The electric car market is still maturing itself, so in the future we will likely see improved and cheaper mod technologies for existing cars to convert them to electric or at least hybrid/ PHEV, and also better technology for replacing LI batteries as they wear out.

Re: Elon, he didn't do shit to do shit to develop the tech. He just heavily invested in Tesla, and I'm not gonna he mad at him for investing in a clean car tech company that was mature enough for investment on his scale.

No, just that from your posting tone you seem like the sort of person that hangs out with a lot of haters.
