Welp, it was nice knowing you. Good luck writing with only one eye and one hand.

I'm not op, but this comment makes no sense to me?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Google what happened to Salman Rushdie.

What on earth does that have to do with someone writing books that include Islamic lore? Yes, what happened to him was awful. But he was very specifically attacking and mocking Islam. That doesn't mean that anyone who even mentions Islam or uses it in their writing is going to have that happen to them.

Honestly, if you are serious and not a troll, you are coming across as very prejudiced and not particularly rational.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. So Salman Rushdie had it coming, according to you? Siding with the extremists' view of The Satanic Verses in order to defend a government-sanctioned fatwa against an author that led to multiple assassination attempts and maiming is not the enlightened take that you seem to think it is.

What? HOw on earth did you get that from what I said? No, that's not what I said at all. I was saying that the extremists specifically go after people critical of Islam, not anyone who mentions it.

Well SOMEBODY is being a little troll today.
That or you're very desperate for fisty cuffs in the comments.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
> ignores the fact that people have been writing about religion for centuries and that many sanctioned killings have taken place, especially under Christian rulers.
> points out one example of someone being attacked by a Muslim extremist, insulting my religion by implying that its populated entirely by aggressive nutjobs.
> "I win the internet today guys!"

But seriously, your tunnel vision in showing. Sure, Islamic extremism is a prevalent problem in the world today, but don't forget that extremism has existed in religion long before Islam was even founded. Hell, even before any of the Abrahamic religions were founded. So don't make this out to be like its some "muslim specific" thing.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Other religions did this too in the past so it's not a big deal when my religion does it or at least it shouldn't be specifically mentioned."
Nah.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No one here is saying that religious extremism is NBD. No one is even coming close to saying that.

But it is wrong to associate Islam as a religion in its entirety with the actions of fundamentalist religious extremists, and to bring up religious fundamentalists in a discussion that had nothing at all to do with the topic.

Except anyone who thinks all Muslims are extremists and are okay with extremist actions like this are absolutely prejudiced and ignorant. Yes, there are Muslim extremists doing awful things. But they in no way represent all Muslims, and in fact most Muslims disavow their actions and stand against them.

There's a teacher in the UK living under police protection because he showed - with warnings beforehand so anyone who would be offended could leave - a religious cartoon. It was on a talk about censorship. There were protests about it from Muslims, even though it's just a sodding picture and he prevented offence by warning people. Now he and his family live in fear of their lives. Because of a picture.

You can fuck right off. You're all barbarians.

Ahh, prejudice and bigotry. Do bog off.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Right back at'cha, right back to the bronze age with that.

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-02-25 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Uh, no? First off, it is a small minority of Muslims who are the extremists, same as with the extremists of any religion. And second, there are already fantasy books out there based on Islamic lore and the authors are doing just fine.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
While I will admit my mind did immediately go to Charlie Hebdo, that's not anywhere near the norm. Extremists are by definition extreme, and they could take exception to others for any number of reasons. Yes, they use religion as an excuse, but that's what it is, an excuse. Most people writing about Islamic lore wouldn't garner their notice.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think you'd be surprised by how widespread the support for them is, just never admitted out loud.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, like there is no christian extremists. Leave us alone

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
How many authors mocking Christianity have been brutally maimed or murderered by Christian extremists lately?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Christian extremists murder people for all kinds of reasons, but they’re generally acting on their own initiative and not under the direct orders of a major religious figure and head of state, so it’s a little different. Also, the Christian ones tend to target teachers, doctors and women in general, but that has more to do with who their leaders tell them are dangerous than with their great tolerance for fantasy writers.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Christian extremists sure do try to come close to fundie Islamic treatment of women and minorities in some states and countries but they're not quite there yet.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Frankly? I absolutely don't know about western countries and I don't really care. But our own christians have a law going for them where they can get anyone they don't like into jail. It especially includes people who mock our sort of christianity. Fun times.
USA's christians made possible for women to be killed or destroyed just for having sex in a lot of states. It includes writers. So get from your high horse and fuck out

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Still not anywhere near the shit women in Islamic countries have to put up with.
