Welp, it was nice knowing you. Good luck writing with only one eye and one hand.

Wow. Uh, no? First off, it is a small minority of Muslims who are the extremists, same as with the extremists of any religion. And second, there are already fantasy books out there based on Islamic lore and the authors are doing just fine.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
While I will admit my mind did immediately go to Charlie Hebdo, that's not anywhere near the norm. Extremists are by definition extreme, and they could take exception to others for any number of reasons. Yes, they use religion as an excuse, but that's what it is, an excuse. Most people writing about Islamic lore wouldn't garner their notice.

I'm Christian and I agree with this. I want to see more fantasy or scifi based on all sorts of different cultures, legends, and lore, including Islamic cultures.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm Jewish, and I'd love to see more fiction exploring both Islamic and Jewish lore and cultures.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-27 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, I don't really care for that in fic when it's done with Christian themes because it's usually quite awkward; I have to think the same would be true for Islamic themes

More variety is always good.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Lore" as in, for example, explicitly Islam-flavored djinni existing and being treated as fantastical creatures that are not explicitly religious, yes pls. Christian-flavor demons in mainstream Western stuff is old and worn

But "lore" as in "let us use this story to show you how God/Allah is the solution to everything," nah miss me with that

As a non religious person who was raised and continues to live in a Christian minded world, I only explore Christian themes because of familiarity. I recognize to explore other religious themes I'd have to know a bit more about them.

what do you mean? like the leftovers type stuff? spn type stuff? the young pope type stuff? non-religious but revolving around historical religiosity like the borgias? god's not dead type stuff? an alternate crusades perspective? biopics of legendary religious figures? i think some of these would be very cool and some of these would be a monkey's paw.

I thought depictions of Mohammed were forbidden under Islam, though? Or at least that was what I was taught as someone who doesn't follow that religion.

I don't have much exposure to Islamic literature, not in the same way I've been bombarded with all kinds of Christian stories. I know about The Conference of the Birds, but that's it.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a bit in Ms Marvel fandom and I've seen some in other fandoms that have Muslim characters, but yeah, it's not common.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2023-02-25 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be cool, yeah. I've done some research on angels and read about the Muslim take on them, and read a few other things as sort of side-bars in books, and there's a *lot* of lore and folk tales and whatnot to unpack and play with.

Could be extremely cool so long as it doesn't fall into the preachy crap a lot of Xian authors seem to always push.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-25 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
There's an artist I follow that writes stories with some Muslim lore like Mis(h)adra and Nayra and the Djinn. You probably might enjoy it. http://iasminomarata.com/

I'm not Muslim...

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
...but I would be very interested in seeing Islam and Muslim characters explored more.

The interaction between fictional weirdness and the requirements of a religious faith has always been interesting to me. I wonder if AO3 has a tag for this we could be following. TVTropes calls it "Fantastic Religious Weirdness" (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FantasticReligiousWeirdness) but it doesn't list very many examples...

Not to be the overdone "you can always write it yourself" anon, but I do encourage you to take a crack at writing any ideas you may come up with.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-26 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
You might enjoy Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed and A Dead Djinn in Cairo and A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark.

Most of the Christian lore stuff is either "Left Behind" type garbage or Dan Brown type garbage. Or Supernatural: The Latter Half. So you know. Careful what you wish for.

Are there a lot of more exploratory writings on Islam in Arabic? I know there are some Islamic science fiction books. It could be that you need to look in a different language.

I think it'd be really cool to see in English but, between the very gruesome and highly publicized reprisals on writers writing about Islam and online attacks on writers creating characters outside their own race/ethnicity/religion, I understand why we don't have a lot.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-27 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
That would be interesting!
