What movies/books/shows in a genre that you usually love, were not for you?

I usually love science fiction but not Star Wars (I did like Star Wars when I was a kid though)
I usually love fantasy but not Harry Potter (and not just because of JK's transphobia)
I love British comedy but Mighty Boosh bores me

So many things.

I'm very picky.

I am usually all over a combination of science fiction, absurdist and adult animation but I just could NOT get into Rick and Morty and abandoned it pretty quick. Not at all related to overall problems people have with that show/fandom as I like plenty of things where the fanbase can be obnoxious (hello MCU) - it's just that it has elements as a show that tick my boxes usually and I just found it annoying.

Terry Pratchett's Soul Music. It is the only Discworld book that I have no interest in revisiting.

I really like Star Wars but I found Andor so fucking boring I gave up after episode 6. It was pretty but I didn't care, and I didn't love Rogue One so I had no desire to continue.

I Married A Witch (1942) has so much going for it that I usually love but the movie fell flat for me.

I'm down for most fantasy. ASOIAF didn't work for me both because of the rampant child rape and because of the viewpoint switching. I'm down with "realism" but ASOIAF was just dark, not realistic. Then again, I did find GOT way more enjoyable. But some of the characters were aged up, which worked better for me.

Also didn't like Assassin's Apprentice (didn't read any further in the series) because first person just doesn't work for me.

Got to say that as someone who likes the other Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, I never really understood the love for Les Miserables.

I liked some of the songs, but as a whole I couldn't get into it.

Weekend Plans?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2023-03-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
What is everyone doing?

I am debating whether or not to drive to my sister's house tomorrow. Her MIL has an extra ticket to Hamilton so I could go see it but I hate last minute plans (and plan changes). Other than that, I don't know.

Writing F/M/M porn and reading classic Russian novels as 17th century folk music plays in the background, might break out a bottle with this rainy weather too. Only one life. Live it richly.

Tonight my mom is taking a break and spending it in a hotel. So I'll be looking out for my dad.

tomorrow I might sleep all day, or might watch Voyager. Sunday night I'm taking a break in a hotel. Will probably sleep most of the time there.

I have friends who want me to go out for the new raid tomorrow in Pokemon Go with them, not sure if my body will hold up.

The first Lunatic episode of Tiger & Bunny is scheduled for tomorrow on the rewatch that the fan community organized, so I will happily be rewatching that and live-tweeting about how I had no idea at the time that I was going to be thinking about this guy as much as I wound up doing.

Also need to draw another picture of him to put in a package to a friend when I send out the stuff we group-ordered (two down, one to go). And hopefully I will manage to meet up with another friend or two in FFXIV so we can get some raids out of the way together.

It"s Lulu anon...

...and the privste copy of one of works has arrived! Very impressed by its quality all things considered. I'n not used to working with PDFs, so some new typoes made it in, but otherwise it's damn near perfect, would recommend.

With that and being approved to start HRT this year, this has been a super exciting week all around.

I know anime fans keep talking about Bocchi being so hashtag relatable and I avoided Bocchi the Rock for a while because of it, but I finally watched the show and damn if she isn't hashtag relatable. When she was thinking about the horror of the sports festival for introverted people it took me right back to how much I hated Field Day at school.

:Spoilers for The Marvel young adult novel Winter Soldier: Cold Front:
:TW for gross body stuff:

The story has poor Bucky dealing with constant memory loss. He'll go on missions and do things and progress the plot. And then on the next mission he's just like "???". Anyway. On one of the last missions a medic is looking him over and is like "How'd you get shot?" and he's like "???!?!?!? I GOT SHOT?!? IN THE LEG?!?! TWO WEEKS AGO!?!? AH!?!"

And I found this really relatable because a terrible combo of covid brain fog/depression brain fog led me to forget I had a diva cup inside of myself. I found it one day and my reaction was a very similar "?!?!?!????!!!! I HAVE THIS? IN THE [NOT-LEG]!?! DAYS AGO?!? AH!?!"

So yeah. I related to him SO HARD in that scene.

Yuri Petrov, from Tiger & Bunny. Largely because this fan art is 100% accurate and it kinda made me realize some things about my relationships (or lack thereof) with other people.

Titchy Gren strangely enough. He's quite quotable, kudos to his voice actor.

Porsche. Dude just wanted to put his younger brother through college. Gets forced into the mob as a bodyguard and is like "I may have to do this to live, but you can't make me be good at it" and then proceeds to be the worst bodyguard ever. No notes.

Late night venting.

Ugh, Facebook. It can be a useful tool sometimes but I swear to god it erodes my faith in humanity. Right now I'm struggling to ignore/going to block these people who are members of groups I follow:

* Helpless "I'm in an abusive relationship and have no moneeeeeeeeeeeey lady who keeps adopting animals she cannot afford to take care of (including spaying/neuter and vet care) and then trying to rehome them again, while also begging for money to cover her bills and pleading that she has a young child so [insert a bunch of venmo/paypal/whatever info here] puhleeeeeeeeeeese. And ffs community, STOP GIVING THIS POS FREELOADER CATS AND BUNNIES.

* Incompetent group admin who "doesn't want drama" but constantly stirs up drama by feeding peoples' persecution complexes about stupid shit. No, just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean you're being personally attacked or bullied. This is a grown fucking man in his 40s, BTW.

* Same grown fucking man who cannot handle even the slightest disagreement or criticism and whines about a hostile environment that he created, by accusing everyone of disrespecting him by... *checks notes* ... having beliefs that differ from his own.

* all the fucking idiots who see the same whiny bullshit from the above snowflake and fail to grasp that just because someone is throwing a public tantrum doesn't mean they've actually been wronged.

Fuuuuuuuuuck all y'all.
