Brendan Fraser is 6 feet 3 inches (190cm), if anyone else was blown away with how short the other people look in that photo.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's it? That's my husband's height and he seems normal to me, but I'm tall, too.

Hollywood has a lot of petite people.

Thanks you for converting the height in the metric system <333
Small gesture, but much much appreciated.

Yeah... I want to be supportive as well, but that movie seems positively vile. I hated Requiem for a Dream aside from the soundtrack, so I'm not very hopeful.

I hated Requiem for a Dream too. Didn't know it was the same guy who directed The Whale so I guess I just lost any interest I had in seeing the movie.

I'm happy for him. I'm not gonna watch that movie, tho.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Hard same.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-26 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here! Nothing about the actual movie interests me (even though I love the Brenassance and have enjoyed a few of Aranofsky's movies).

Unrelated: I was surprised by how rude people were on Twitter in regards to Austin Butler as Elvis. I'd never heard of the guy before that movie, and in his interviews, he seemed like a nice guy. If that was fake, then it just shows what a convincing actor he is. I don't get it.

I randomly watched it the other night. Depressing as hell, but I see why he got an Oscar.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
We must be in very different circles - I saw a *lot* of people being very sharply critical of him and the role he played.

(Personally, I'm more in the "role sucked but still happy for him" camp)

Closest to that I've seen is Dove's fat suit criticism remarks (which felt real disingenuous coming from this company).

+1, my feed has all been folks ragging on the movie's concept and presentation and very rarely letting him off the hook.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I was under the impression this was a pretty respectful movie (aside from the "fat make up" that's quite gross but eh) ://
I'm so disappointed now.
Can anyone provide more context?

I honestly have not seen any criticism online (aside from the standard "it's long and boring").

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the movie, but there were two criticisms I saw people make. 1, the fat makeup is bad and it makes him look grotesque in a way that isn't respectful; 2, the movie apparently sort of implies that fat people don't deserve love and respect

(Anonymous) 2023-03-25 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
He had to play a morbidly obese person. How else would they do that safely other than "fat make up"?

Someone in my country complained that Brendan Fraser was a horrible choice for the character because he's not "fat and queer". But she also ignored that Brendan WAS fat due his depression and the fear of speak about his abuse. Of course, no one took her words seriously because it was obvious she didn't watch the movie (her words) and she was already infamous.

I guess this person doesn't know what acting is. He also was never actually at Hamunaptra....

Having read the comments, etc., I guess I'm just a little baffled. For most people, a morbidly obese person isn't wildly attractive. And he didn't even look that big; not like some of the real-life people featured in reality tv (who are, somehow, cajoled into being naked, or nearly naked, on film).

Being angry that his fat suit wasn't attractive seems like a weird fight.

And I never got the 'you're fat so you don't deserve love' vibe; his sis-in-law obviously loved him, his partner loved him (and he wasn't all thin and pretty to begin with), his daughter was mostly lashing out in grief and anger, but it was obvious she wanted to love him, even his ex still seemed to have affection for him.

I dunno.

>>Being angry that his fat suit wasn't attractive seems like a weird fight

OH NO I'm probably the anon you're talking about here, the one who wrote that the fat make up is "gross". I mean gross NOT as in "not attractive", but in a "uncanny valley" sort of way. I can't even explain it myself, really. It seems to me like there is something wrong.
I know IRL people (I mentioned my family), watch obese youtubers and even watch some on those 600lbs life type reality shows, so faces of people who are heavily obese are not foreign nor unnatural to me. It's just that make up... it looks wrong to me. IDK I guess I can't explain the feeling I'm getting from the photos/video I've seen from this movie. Maybe if you watch the movie it's less noticeable?

Sorry if I gave the impression that I think obese people are gross :((
Also I'm not attracted to men. Even Fraser's natural face is not attractive to me. That's absolutely not what I was trying to convey with my clumsy post.

I've been weirded out by the reaction in my corner of the Internet. They hate "Whale" and love Fraser with the same passion. Go figure.

I'm glad he got the recognition he deserved after all the vile shit HW put him through. I just hope he never forgets that he's working in a viper's nest, and chooses carefully who he trusts in the future. He seems like a genuine guy. I wish him well.

I am generally not surprised at the fatpobic/pro-thinness comments whenever anything relating to body size and/or health comes up. But it's always frustrating. I sigh and I think of all the things I want to write and then I don't.

I just want to say, there's more to being a fat person than being fat. All/majority of our misery and/or joy does not rely on our bodies and what people think of it.

Our observations of how we are treated/viewed are heightened but that's a societal thing that fat people have often felt like we have to internalize because we live in such a pro-thinness world. People mask it behind health and I hate the talking down from people when it turns into "it's about health" talks.
Signal to me that the person talking is not willing to have their POV challenged, they want to continue to see fat people as defective first/foremost.
