Um, correct me if I'm wrong (I don't really watch Avatar), but the point of the show was probably not, "HAY GUIZ LOOK AT THESE ASIANS DOING ASIAN THINGS IN PSEUDO-ASIA."

They're not asian. This is solely because they exist in a universe that is not our own and they don't have an Asia and therefore can't be asian.
People have to get that through their skulls. This does not mean that they should not be portrayed by asian actors, just that the characters are not asian because they CAN'T be.

What I always wondered about is if the asian population of Avatar fans would have taken the whole race thing so seriously if Katara and Sokka were cast with Latino actors. If the whole thing was about skin color matching that of the drawings, it makes sense that Aang is white.

...The point of the story is that it's based in Asia (or the equivalent of Asia) and has Asian people in it? Really? Now, I know very little about Avatar - I watched the first twelve or thirteen episodes a couple of years ago but then I forgot about it and haven't watched any since - but that strikes me as... not the point at all, actually.

Because, well, the point of a story is almost never the cultural influences of where it's based or what the races of the people happen to be.

To clarify: a story can be about racism, but it's not about person x being y race except as that pertains to the story, which is ABOUT racism (which Avatar is not anyway, last I checked). A story can be about things that happen in x place, and can include y cultural influences, but it's not ABOUT those cultural influences, except as they pertain to the story, which is ABOUT something else (let's see how many times I can capitalize "about," shall we?).

1.) Sokka and Katara are more influenced by Inuit/Alaskan Native cultures.

2.) Cultures add flavor to the story. They are not "the point." The story itself and the recurrent themes are "THE POINT."

3.) If all you got from the show was "OMG! ASIANZ!!!1!!" then I suspect that it was you, Original Poster, who missed "THE POINT."
