What did you get up to today F!S?

I spent a productive day outdoors and am now having dinner and listening to the rain.

I went to my niece's gymnastics exhibition. It wasn't too showy since she just started this year, but she had fun.

Replaced my broken shower head and updated the household budget. I just can't find the energy to clean anymore and I want to make space in the budget for a cleaner.

Very light cleaning ahead of a visit by maintenance. Did a little cooking and ordered a vacuum that doesn't s- uh... damn that joke. A bagged vacuum that's affordable and hopefully not awful. Probably ate too much junk all day; hope I don't regret it later.

Fought an ant infestation. Somehow, overnight dozens of ants decided to take over a bathroom cabinet. The Terro bait seems to be working at least.

Virtual church, bike ride around the neighborhood, then settled in for some gaming. Animal Crossing daily upkeep, then making progress on a few different quest lines in Final Fantasy XIV.

But now I'm at a new dungeon I have to do with actual people, and after a crappy experience with some nasty people last night, I am not particularly eager to use Duty Finder again. :P

Had an interesting phone conversation with a good friend who I invited over for dinner, cake and swimming but he has the schedule from Hell.
Also went to the grocery store. Whoop de shit.

Nothing. I may do laundry (every time I turn around, there's laundry) while waiting for Yellowjackets and Barry to come on TV tonight.

I finally got waxed! (TMI: underarms, arms, legs). It's been a long winter and it feel good to be groomed! Now I just have to thread my mustache and shower...

But overall a good day. Went outside and enjoyed the weather for a bit and spending time with family.

Did 5 loads of laundry, watched some Criminal Minds, and visited with my mom and aunt. We went to a fancy Italian place for dinner, which was delicious.

Congrats! And aaahh, I love the sound of a good rain.

I also had a productive day! I got out and tilled the small plot for the corn field and cleaned litterboxes (emptying them out, cleaning with dish detergent, then drying, and then spraying with an enzymatic cleaner. And then put fresh litter in! \o/ I also watched two episodes of the Mandalorian, which is a big deal because I haven't watched anything in a very long time.

Now I'm going to have dinner and play some video games. :)

What have you been obsessed with the longest?

What obsession have you produced the most fanworks for? (If you lean that way.)

Re: Inspired by #1

Hard to say what I've been obsessed with the longest. Plenty of things I've fixated on for nearly a decade or more.

The obsession I've produced the most fanworks for is probably the Suikoden series.

Hm, I wouldn't say I was obsessed but I was more actively in the Shadowhunters fandom while the show was airing and for about 2 years after it finished(I still go look at the fic sometimes but my own plot-bunnies for that fandom have faded for now). I wrote about 20-something fics in that fandom and I like most of what I wrote but some of those fics I'm definitely a little more 'eeeh' on these days. I doubt I'll delete them though as I don't tend to do that unless I really, really hate something I wrote.

Before that I wrote a handful of MCU fic, but it really was only a handful.

My typical fandom-speed is: I get into something, I write 1-3 fics, I then peace out and only read fic for a year or so after until something else grabs my active attention and then rinse and repeat the cycle. I might come back after a 6 year break to write something else but a lot of the time when I'm done writing fic in a fandom I'm done for good.

I've been in Steve/Bucky fandom since 2014. I can't think of anything I've been in always. I go in and out of other fandoms and hobbies.

Does walking count? Lol. I've been going on long walks forever.

My fandom style is hardcore serial monogamy. I hyperfixate to an unhinged degree on one OTP for years at a time, until eventually the obsession begins to wane enough for my brain to latch onto a new hyperfixation. I do have other pairings and fandoms I enjoy as well, but I only obsess over them a fraction as intensely as I obsess over my main OTP.

The longest I've ever stayed with a main OTP was seven years, and that was with Johnlock. The funny thing is, I stopped following the show about three years in because it was trash, but my obsession endured anyway because the fanfic was so lit. I was pretty much entirely into that ship for the fanfic and the fanon. (The fanart was also really, really good.)

If we're going by straight-up longest, then Star Trek. I watched it whenever I could while I was growing up. Starting with TNG airing through to Enterprise. I watched whatever was airing; I read all the books I could get my hands on, both factual about the show and actors and fiction (I still have an entire shelf in my home library just for ST books).

It used to be The Thing I did with my dad. We would watch Star Trek together, even if we did nothing else. I was afraid, when my mom and I finally dealt with what an abusive piece of shit he was and got a restraining order, that he would taint my love of Star Trek (he went more crazy; got arrested for violating the RO and there was a short kidnapping; the two were not related). But thankfully, I found I liked it even more once he was gone. So that's about 13 years. Enterprise couldn't hold my attention though (LOL), and I dropped out of actively watching anything ST until Lower Decks.

Longest fandom would probably be MDSZ/The Untamed at 5 years and counting continuously or Hannibal at 7 years and counting off and on at regular intervals.

...Bunnies. Since I was 2. :D

If you mean fandoms though, shockingly Vagrant Story is #2. Final Fantasy IV (when it was known in the US as FF2) has been around longer and I've bought 5 different versions of it for 5 different consoles and will replay it anytime.

Vagrant Story is a deeper obsession, though, and I'm pretty sure that counting fic, art, and cosplay, I've made more fanstuff for it than every other fandom combined.

(Also have been a TMNT fan since the 80s, but not actually active in fandom ever, and haven't seen the latest incarnations. I just still get a giddy rush of glee when I see stuff from it.)

Thank you for the advice on scholarships yesterday!

(Anonymous) 2023-05-08 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
There was a lot of good advice I want to thank everyone for! I've been in a giant funk about how am I going to even start finding ways to get back into education, so I'm glad to hear from others some sensible ways to approach things. I guess my first stop is to research locations and make emails.

OP from yesterday's Genshin secret

(Anonymous) 2023-05-08 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Hello, sorry for not replying as I needed a weekend for myself (and to clean my messy house, honestly) so I didn't check F!S. Thanks for all the kind replies, you rock. :)

Just wanted to make one thing clear because a lot of people didn't get it, and my (verbose) wording is to blame.
Some people replied things like "I can't relate because I am F2P" and "if you're an adult and can't control your savings ...".
I was a F2P player. Hence why I said I "never understood" the struggles of people who have a lot to spend on gacha before. I am chronically disabled and don't have money to spend on most nice games, this is why I played Genshin (for free) actually. And I never stress-pulled for the same reason why I never stress-spent, no money to waste.
This is why I mentioned spending *spoons* not *money*. The secret was intended exactly as a "hey, I thought it would never happen to me but guess what. My mistake, but also, learned my lesson".

On that day I wasted my in-game currency carelessly since I was stressed out and got it for "free" anyway, not thinking of spoons (time, energy) I had spent on them because the banner I wanted so much happened to be released in my worst stress day in a while. So I didn't have fun pulling, got frustrated. If I had money to spare, I would've (the maximum you can spend for one character is 180, so at 148 I was pretty close). I didn't, so I ran out of (in-game currency) savings and that was it.
And I was going to quit playing in January (because my issues with Genshin Impact, its community and its company run way deeper than "it's gacha") but didn't because THIS banner lured me in and I thought getting this character would make the game fun again (abusive relationship dynamics) so I kept "wasting spoons" to play it and save in-game currency only to get further disappointed in it.
Way back when I loved this game and really like(d?) some aspects such as characters and lore, and was pretty active in fandom/fanworks, so quitting the game also means I will stop talking to some people and so on.
This is why I was really disappointed. It felt like "spoons wasted for months for further disappointment, now thanks to my luck I will stop enjoying this story and talking to these people as I am not even lucky enough to be born rich or healthy enough to keep a proper job unlike other players". I had a VERY unlucky day then and also had a horrible day at my job prior to getting home. So it was REALLY depressing.

Of course I mistakenly counted too much on this one thing to make me feel like "I win" and cheer me up but it wasn't the root cause of my misery. I know I am addiction-prone, my family is full of alcoholics and young-onset OCD runs in our blood as well. This is why I said I acknowledge it's not the gacha's fault. And sure it's designed to do this to people at their lowest. I just had never felt it personally. Now I have! That's all.

To the Genshin fans who commented I never built the Traveler. I really like catalyst/claymore users and wanted Baizhu since Liyue chapter. So when the banner was leaked (in February IIRC) I was hoping to get "Baizhu, and Kaveh if I am lucky, and then I will start HAVING FUN in Sumeru in May (that's 9 months after release) instead of pushing my way through with characters I do not like" .
I actually can't play bow characters because 1) visual impairment issues (actual. physical. diagnosed.) 2) coordination issues, 3) mobile player. So I don't use Collei. And didn't get Yaoyao because I was thinking of quitting in January as I said (not even Alhaitham made me log in). This banner was my reason (or excuse) to stay so I regretted all that happened a lot more than any other person would.

But I am doing a lot better today. I mean, it was the push I needed to change my relationship with this game. Like that abusive relationship in which you gamble to see if the person will stay because you like them even though they're bad to you and they don't, so you're like "it hurts, but tomorrow is another day".

late rant

(Anonymous) 2023-05-08 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh the lovely feeling of having to fill out the yearly self-reflection/employee evaluation when you never have anything to show for it and it never actually fucking benefits you in any way. WHY THE FUCK DOES THIS THING FUCKING EXIST. ESPECIALLY when NOBODY EVER LISTENS TO WHAT YOU WANT TO OFFER and DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT IF YOU'RE FAILING, ONLY THAT YOU'RE MAKING THEM LOOK BAD. How the fuck do they even have time to care about this shit when the entire company's working toward one collective project anyway that eats up so much time that 3/4 of the company ends up doublebooked at some point during the day? Retire this fucking shit, it's beyond stressful and sends me in a homicidal rage, and nobody fucking enjoys it anyway.

tldr 1st world work problems, I'm sure I'm being childish, etc
