i hang out in the discord for a dutch streamer and there are several people there who are keen to remind us that may 4th is their day for remembering their war dead (compare november 11th), so they get quite upset about the star wars memes

I sympathize, but it does seem a bit inevitable that to most of the non-Dutch world, May the 4th isn't going to be a solemn occasion.

Most but not all. My dad observes May 4th as a day of rememberance for the Kent State shooting.

November 11 is Pocky Day in Japan because 1111 looks like four Pocky sticks. Fanart of couples sharing Pocky abounds. Never seen any complaints about it, just people from other countries enjoying the art.

Hell, there are probably millions of people outside the US who are baffled about why November 9th is such a big deal. :D

November 9th isn't important at all. But in most countries, November 9th is the date that is referenced when someone says 9/11.

November 11th is a thing for most countries that fought in World War I - it's Armistice Day, it marks the last day of fighting when the war officially ended.

Yeah, what I'm getting from poking around is that Liberation Day on the 5th was set because it was the actual day that the Netherlands were formally liberated, and then May 4th was chosen as the day for the remembrance ceremony because it happened to be the day before?

How do we know they weren't honoring the dead before now?

It's a national TV broadcast with poetry, sermons, a service followed by two minutes of silence every year on May 4 at 8 pm, and it has been like that. Every Dutch person knows this and grew with this being a big deal, so it's highly unlikely that anyone is using it to annoy a few star wars fans.

How was this the first year you noticed this massive global thing that’s been going on for almost twenty years? Even the super hardcore “May 25th is Star Wars Day” fans have mostly started doing May the Fourth. Five or six years ago the flight boards at Heathrow had Star Wars destinations; this year wasn’t any different from any other at least since the third trilogy came out.

We never had this, only fans do some memes. This doesn't even make any sense in other languages.

I don't think it's necessarily a massive global thing, though. Sure, fans have been doing it for ages. It's a common internet thing. But remember that the fannish part of the internet isn't the ENTIRE internet, nor is it reflective of the general population everywhere. I live in a small, rural town and I can assure you that when it comes to brick and mortar businesses whose demographic aren't geeks, this has NOT been a trendy thing for two decades.

I think that's a bit much. I'd forgotten this entirely until OP brought it up, and I used to only have to deal with the stupid puns and such when I was active in Star Wars fandom. When I wasn't around SW fans, it completely disappeared from my life. Disney poured enough money into the release of its ST that they sort of made a blip, when those movies came out. But the level of canon hype the OP is describing, offline, is news to me.

I hate it. This stupid pun with a lisp makes my brain all itchy. I had to block all versions of this phrase on my socials, but it doesn't 100% belp
