i hang out in the discord for a dutch streamer and there are several people there who are keen to remind us that may 4th is their day for remembering their war dead (compare november 11th), so they get quite upset about the star wars memes

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I sympathize, but it does seem a bit inevitable that to most of the non-Dutch world, May the 4th isn't going to be a solemn occasion.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Right, like, at some point there's only 365 days in a year

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Most but not all. My dad observes May 4th as a day of rememberance for the Kent State shooting.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
TBH, if some fandom made November 11 into their big day for memes, I would not even notice the conflict...

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Same, anon.

November 11 is Pocky Day in Japan because 1111 looks like four Pocky sticks. Fanart of couples sharing Pocky abounds. Never seen any complaints about it, just people from other countries enjoying the art.

Hell, there are probably millions of people outside the US who are baffled about why November 9th is such a big deal. :D

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm from the US and I've never heard about November 9th.

Is Nov 11th a UK thing?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
November 9th isn't important at all. But in most countries, November 9th is the date that is referenced when someone says 9/11.

November 11th is a thing for most countries that fought in World War I - it's Armistice Day, it marks the last day of fighting when the war officially ended.

November 9th is actually a pretty important day in Germany for more than one reason.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
OK but that's not what the comment meant

(Anonymous) 2023-05-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Most countries put day first, then month.

US puts the month first, then the day, so 9/11 is September 11. In lots of other countries, 9/11 means November 9. (9 November)

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Why do they use May 4?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
"May the Forth be with you."

Or did you mean the Dutch? I don't know, in their case.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I meant the Dutch.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry! I'm not a Star Wars fan myself, and most SW references whoosh over my head, so I thought you genuinely might not know the reference. I only know it because I know people who are fans.

I can't seem to find any particular reason why, but this article is interesting, nonetheless.

https://dutchreview.com/culture/society/national-remembrance-day-the-netherlands/

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what I'm getting from poking around is that Liberation Day on the 5th was set because it was the actual day that the Netherlands were formally liberated, and then May 4th was chosen as the day for the remembrance ceremony because it happened to be the day before?

Interesting!

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
In other words, a few people who didn't care about honoring the dead on May 4th or any other day until they realized they could weaponize it to play Fun Police to a trend they don't like?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
How do we know they weren't honoring the dead before now?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a national TV broadcast with poetry, sermons, a service followed by two minutes of silence every year on May 4 at 8 pm, and it has been like that. Every Dutch person knows this and grew with this being a big deal, so it's highly unlikely that anyone is using it to annoy a few star wars fans.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
*has been like that for decades
