I disagree about the TV shows, because saying that the writing on the TV shows has gone downhill implies that it was ever good.

I agree about the movies, though.

y, it was never good.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-15 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
True, it was never particularly good. Some of the shows were better than others, though.

Marvel's Agents of Shield was just a retouched version of Team Knight Rider, right down to the flying plane base. And at least TKR had enough self awareness to know it was cheesy trash.

Not having seen any of them, I got the impression that Wandavision, Hawkeye and Winter Soldier & Falcon were considered to be pretty good?

I've seen only Falcon & WS and it was... not really good. The production value is very high and the acting amazing, but the writing is very off.
From my personal perspective, they fucked up the characters and the story was very stupid and shallow when it was trying to deal with themes like racism and refugees' rights. A complete mess.

I was under the impression that Wandavision, Loki, and Hawkeye were the standouts.

The Falcon & Winter Soldier was a bit of a mess because the original plot was about a pandemic and they had to hastily write it out of the show.

The only show I watched to the end was Falcon and Winter Soldier, and I thought it was pretty bad, honestly. And not just in the sense that there were some things that didn't make sense or had some rough patches or there were some things that didn't translate well the the screen. The whole thing didn't make sense. Like the other anon said, it was very shallow, clumsy and stupid in its handling of the real world issues it tried to tackle, and it fucked up most of the characters in ways that are going to be hard for future writers to fix.

It also seemed very eager to deconstruct everything good that came before it in the franchise, to the point where it felt like the writer was actively hostile towards the source material itself.

Thirded, Winter Soldier & Falcon was bad. Writing was bad, ending was bewildering and this strange buddy cop elements that looked more like queerbaiting were annoying af.
Everything I know about Wandavision makes me mildly repulsed. Never have got to Hawkeye.
Moon Knight was decent, even though I hated Layla character with passion - I am over and done of "badass" MCU female characters.

Ms Marvel was a delight

and Hawkeye was a disappointment but had some fun nods to the Fraction comics that I enjoyed. The rest I never even bothered with.

Yeah, I feel like the shows really expose the MCU's biggest weakness, which is that...honestly, it's pretty shallow? I say that as someone who ships an MCU OTP and enjoyed the hell out of the MCU for years. "Shallow" is not a comprehensive indictment; there are/were plenty of things the MCU did/does well. But nuance, subtlety, and conceptually hard-hitting storytelling were never its strong suit, IMO. And because of the nature of movies, the MCU was able to deliver big, punchy, fun entertainment with a decent amount of heart, over and over and over again without the underlying shallowness of the narrative becoming too much of a glaring issue. But TV isn't really subject to the same set of expectations and considerations that movies are. Which IMO is a big part of why the weakness of the storytelling in the shows is so much more glaring. Because the don't use the medium of TV well at all, while at the same time they no longer have the excuse of a limited run-time, the expectation of a tight three-act structure, and "well what more do you expect from a comic book movie?"

I did think Hawkeye was reasonably good--definitely a pleasant surprise--but it's really the only one I felt that way about, while several others I found downright tedious to get through.

Even Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel weren't able to stick the landing, though, and they were the most enjoyable of the shows, I think.

I haven't watched much of the shows but I agree about MCU's shallow writing problem being especially noticeable in the shows.

The actors do the heavy lifting in giving characters depth, hence it took a while for people to notice.

In terms of even, say, Odin's relationship with Thor and Loki, most of the depth and complexities comes from the first film and even then most of it came from the craft of the actors and Kenneth Branagh.

watch Moon Knight, I beg of you, it's nything but shallow!!

(Anonymous) 2023-05-16 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm here to defend Moon Knight with all that I have, sorry OP!
it's super good in comparison to any action TV nowdays, mostly thanks to the amazing cast and nice mystery story, and it's pretty much a stand alone series without any connections to MCU. I watched it as if it was an original series and enjoyed it a lot! (can't believe I'm the only one defending it, FS I was expecting better of you smh)

idk about the others but I heard a lot of good stuff about Ms.Marvel (maaaybe would watch it eventually) and WandaVision (not a fan of these two so prob won't ever watch it). Loki has mixed responses afaik. but yeah, the rest of these are rumored to be pretty bad.
