Have you ever been on a plane? Is this a fiction only phobia or a all planes ever phobia?

That's a rough phobia. I feel like it would pop up a lot.

This was my comment. I've flown a lot. And I'm always lost in panic every time I have to. Combination of heights phobia and vertigo that gets particularly bad on planes. It always feels like the plane is going to flip over every time it turns.

Gods, I also have heights phobia+vertigo+my ear hurts really bad so planes are not fun.
Also we have major aviation problems and my friend of course send like million news links even after I asked her to stop. She flights alright. Yeah, thanks a lot.

Hmmm this is interesting. Personally I also hate flying but I've never had an issue with flying scenes. I think my flying anxiety is more claustrophobia-adjacent though - what gets me is the feeling that the plane is totally out of my control and I'm trapped there and if there's turbulence there's nothing I can do except hang on.

Reassuring fact: no plane has ever crashed due to turbulence

(Anonymous) 2023-05-24 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I appreciate that but I assure you that I know this intellectually! Knowing the facts is not the primary issue (and also, even knowing that intellectually, my brain is still capable of going BUT WHAT IF THE MAINTENANCE WORKERS WERE CUTTING CORNERS AND THERE WERE STRESS FRACTURES THAT WEREN'T NOTICED AND AAAAAAAH)

Now I feel compelled to comb through the entire catalog of Mini Air Crash Investigation to confirm this.

From what I know (I have read about this) turbulence and similar weather conditions have caused crashes decades ago, in like the 40s and 50s, but generally aren't the sole cause of crashes in the last 50 or 60 years. They've *contributed* to crashes more recently but with modern aircraft crashes generally require significant pilot error, management error, mechanical error, or some combination of them.

Yeah, I watch the show "Air Disasters" - I'm guessing the "Mini Air Crash" show you mention is similar to that one - and I really can't recall any stories about crashes based on turbulence, either. I've also learned that most crashes happen during takeoff or landing.

I don't have a phobia of flying, per se, but I'm not super wild about it because I did have kind of a crappy flying experience once (we made it to our destination okay, just one of those flights where it seemed there was always some issue popping up at some point along the trip). Strangely, though, watching that "Air Disasters" show has really helped ease my issues with flying a lot. It really does take a LOT to bring down a flight, and the amount of changes and improvements that have been made over the decades to help make flying safer have really proven to be beneficial in a lot of ways.

I totally understand where watching those kinds of shows may just exacerbate one's fear, though, yeah, 'cause even if you know on an intellectual level that flying is overall a pretty safe form of travel, and even if you know the kinds of efforts that have been made to ensure that's the case...the real life crash stories that do exist are, obviously, still pretty disturbing to hear about, and even fictional ones can be pretty freaky to watch as well.

My grandma refuses to fly anywhere, because she thinks she's going to crash and die. Before I really understood about phobias, I tried to reassure her by using statistics that flying was MUCH safer than driving. I don't think she's ever left the state; she's never going to come visit me. :(

(Anonymous) 2023-05-25 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I HATE this fucking statistic thing. Blah blah planes are safer blah blah. Not only it never had helped with a phobia but I also am scared of cars now. I get new vehicle anxiety every fucking day. I still use transport of course including planes but it's an everyday battle.

I am sorry about your grandmother though, it sucks :(

(Anonymous) 2023-05-25 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Given my biggest fear isn't the plane crashing but the plane flipping, this stat doesn't actually help me.
