offbeat questions

ask 'em, answer 'em

In North America raccoons fill the monkey niche in the ecosystem. In Australia and Australasia Koala and tree kangaroos do this, in South America, Asia and Africa they have actual monkeys, but in Europe they don't have any animal that fills that niche in the ecosystem; how come? Why is there a vacant eco-niche?

How do raccoons fill the monkey niche?

Re: offbeat questions

NAYRT

Graspy hands, thievery, and general mischief.

Also, Europe has a monkey - the Barbary Macaques.

Re: offbeat questions

(Anonymous) 2023-05-27 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are only in Gibraltar, and they were imported from Africa.

AYRT

No. Fossils of the Barbary Macaques have been found across Europe and on the British Isles. The current European population may be only in Gibraltar, but they once inhabited most of Europe.

Also, if you go back far enough, all monkeys are "imported" from Africa, so you have to draw the line somewhere for something being "native".

Foxes, I suppose?

Re: offbeat questions

(Anonymous) 2023-05-27 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't see many foxes in a canopy, foxes fill the fox niche in every other continent.

Europe has several cold-resistant, tree-climbing animals that are kinda relatives of weasels. Martens, polecats, that sort of thing. They also have some little, nocturnal wild cat relatives that sleep in trees and attics, but the actual name for those escapes me right now.

So I don't think the niche is empty, you're just wondering about the animals that fill it.

Genets?

Good guess, and depending where in Europe the OP was asking about, that might work for them. But I was thinking of an animal people occasionally come across in Germany. The ring-tail's right, but its body isn't as fancy as a genet.

Literal wildcats, then? We also have raccoons in Germany, unfortunately, but they're not native here.

Australia - tree kangaroos are only in the far north. Everywhere else it's possums. Also flying foxes and various gliders.

Re: offbeat questions

(Anonymous) 2023-05-28 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
You are very wrong about Australia. As the other anon said, tree kangaroos aren't everywhere. Possums fill that niche much better (getting into your shit, eating your homegrown fruit and veggies, screeching like devils in the night, pissing evil brown sticky pee on your deck).

And about koalas... if you'd ever seen one or have read even the most basic description of their behaviour, you should know they are the opposite of raccoons. They sleep 20+hours a day and only eat eucalyptus leaves. They literally don't have the time, energy or inclination to fuck anything up.

Out of these four Hitchcock movies, which would be best to watch in a theater?

- Rear Window
- North by Northwest
- Dial M For Murder
- Vertigo

Rear Window. Love that film.

Rear Window is my absolute favorite movie. That said, I have seen all four of these in theaters, and the chase scenes in North by Northwest are really something else on the big screen.

Yeah, I would also lean towards North by Northwest for that reason. Or Vertigo - Vertigo is amazing on the big screen (although I'd probably still choose North by Northwest bc I've seen Vertigo a million times and I think I've only seen North by Northwest once or twice).

You see a SEARCH box.

What is your favorite way to get unpredictable results from said search box?

Type the in the search box as your fav fictional character.

Bonus points if you can spell or misspell exactly the way they do.

Okay, here isn't the best place, but I need the anonimity and expertise (and the understanding of disabledness/poorness too).

I am the anon with a brain malformation and I think I may have a medical emergency. Long story short I had a bad sequence of events this month (PMDD → emotional crap → mothers day which is always disgraceful and more "special dates" → hit my head in an iron bar → more PMDD → fought my boss, etc) and... well, the thing is, my head hurts. Not a normal headache either, not a migraine or a tension headache, more like a contusion headache, but less consistent. Mild shock-like/piercing pains come and go, but I usually feel a heaviness, as if my neck should be immobilized. Sometimes I manage to find a specific comfortable position while in bed but it's a matter of luck. Sorry I suck at explaining.

Anyway, I probably should get a checkup. I don't want to get a CT because I am one of those anti radiation freaks (with good reason) so I have an MRI scheduled, which I should have gotten before anyways. But I don't even know how this stuff works. If the technician notices my head is bleeding / leaking ... then what? Are they supposed to send me to a hospital? Do I have a say? How expensive can this stuff be? I am super dysfunctional (and my brain isn't in optimal state, honestly) so I am really afraid and the tension doesn't seem to be great against the pains.

Unless you're unconscious, you always have a say in your medical treatment. They can strongly recommend, but if you absolutely do not want to be treated then you can sign out Against Medical Advice (AMA). Hospitals make you sign that form so that you cannot later sue them for failing to treat you.

It's impossible to say how expensive stuff can get because it depends on the treatment you need, the hospital you're in, your insurance (if you have any), etc etc, but each hospital has payment plans and even some debt forgiveness depending on financial hardship. You can also get them to reduce the bill by requesting an itemized receipt and questioning just about everything on it. If you have insurance, and they are refusing to pay for it/reimburse, then you can call them and ask for the specific MD who claims that your treatment isn't necessary. 9 times out of 10 your treatment was denied by someone who had no medical training, and they will fold.

Do you have anyone who can come with you to be your advocate? When I don't, I often write down beforehand the questions I want answered (because I WILL forget when in the middle of things) or instructions of what I do or do not want.

AYRT, thanks a lot! Got it. It's definitely good to know.

Honestly I am a bit afraid at all this because I had a neurosurgery recommendation from my insurance but the thing is, my issue has more than one "solution" (resection, radiotherapy, embolization, etc.) with different effects, so I wanted to finish my time at this temporary job to start researching to find out what the best solution for my case would be, so I could even get one option my insurance doesn't offer depending on the effects, and no doctor from my insurance EVER explained ANYTHING they just pushed me to get an angiogram (a rather complex procedure) without further explanation. They never said it was emergential either, they said they couldn't answer that before the angiogram. So I am honestly afraid that my insurance can use that against me like "if she had gone through surgery this wouldn't have happened :/" you know (then again, there was no place to get an angiogram near me before this year so maybe I can use that in my defense too) . It's all a bit complex.

Thanks a lot and I don't, but I always take notes. If I can leave the MRI place on my two feet without further demands that should be good enough.
