Squicks and NOTPs

Terms that have seem to fallen out of favor in fandom, what with their lack of nuance and middle ground, but we all have them. Share your fandom squicks and notps just for fun!

For those who need the reminder:
Squick = is a slang term that refers to something that is so icky or disgusting that it makes you squirm.

notps = the "One True Pairing" that gets a fervent No from you. Opposite of an OTP.

My biggest squick is humiliation in fics. I just can't read it at all. Which sucks because I like BDSM but a lot of times humiliation is involves and not warned for.

It is so frustrating how humiliation/degradation is seen as an automatic in a lot of BDSM fics. I'm with you in that I do not appreciate it. With the exception of I read one fic where the humiliation was that the Dom was praising the sub and it made them squirmy. Still rode that line for me, but as it was all loving and complimentary it kind of worked for me too.

The only ship I can take humiliation in is Kylo/Hux, and then only because it feels in character and still with a healthy balance of praise.

Mostly I really hate humiliation. And I tend to gravitate towards ships where I think the dynamic will lean towards healthy kink and lots of praise.

Totally agree on the squick. And honestly, one of my favorite tropes is the basic opposite where the sub is the enthusiastic one, the one with the experience, the one suggesting ideas for what they want the dom to do to them.

I actually headcanon most of my OTPs with some type of D/s tilt; it's one of my favorite things. However, I also like my sub characters to be at least as strong/able as their Dom counterparts.

If the sub is this trembling flower who needs the same level of TLC that a typical five-year-old needs in order to hold themselves together day to day, it's an instant nope for me.

Squicks: rape to love, dubcon, anything to do with feet, incest portrayed as romantic and healthy, character bashing (even if I actually hate the character), extreme OOC stuff, child/adult

My biggest squick is anal sex, which is unfortunate in finding fic for my M/M ships. It squicks me in other gender combinations too - I'd love more woman-on-top het fic that isn't pegging. Anything where something goes in the ass is just a no.

Other squicks are hanahaki (I'm not the same person who said it in the thread for Secret 2) and sickfic. Being sick is gross and I don't want to read about it in combination with fluffy romance.

Most Dead Dove stuff is a squick for me. My tastes aren't vanilla per se, I like plenty of kinks including many that I would consider to be in the gray area between wholesome and dark. But when it comes to definitely-dark kinks, a solid 98% are a hard pass for me.

Also not a fan of character bashing. I can go with it if the author leaves a note or puts in the tags that they don't actually hate the character, they just needed someone to be the bad guy for plot purposes. I actually love when authors do that, because it instantly neutralizes most of the squickiness for me. But without some kind of disclaimer that the fic isn't meant to be reflective of the canonical character, I just can't. I can't get into the fic, because I'm too busy feeling like the narrative is biased and unfair and untrustworthy in some way.

My two biggest NoTPs are Emma Swan/Killian Jones and Rey/Kylo.

Squicks... idk. Scat and watersports and whatever vomiting is called when it's a sex/kink thing?

Also idk if this has a name, but I loathe when a character who canonically can at least mostly function most of the time, especially one half of a pairing, is turned by some fanfic writers into a ridiculously helpless weeping mess (and not because they just got both their legs broken, or their dog run over or loved one die or something where that makes sense) so other characters/the other half of the ship has to take care of their every need and reassure them that they're still loved and valued even when they've apparently spent their lives less competent than the average five year old in a way that canonically would have seen them dead by adulthood, if not sooner.

And it's not portrayed as depression or mental illness or even neurodivergence.

I get that it's an id-thing, sort of the old "trembling uke" trope in a non-sexual way. And id-fic where a character's had a shit time and other characters fuss over them/fuck them out of it/etc is a staple of fandom.

But when I run into this in the wild it's not "this character who in canon manages to mostly function needs their family/friends/partner/nemesis to help out for awhile and cheer them up out of a bad patch/an existential crisis," it's "the author has a kink for pathetic weepy incompetence," the woobiest of woobies, who can't be held accountable for anything ever.

Earlier today I tried looking for a few fics for a small ship I like, it got two new fics...! both where my NOTP is the main ship. Then I try to move on and check a different ship tag. Again, one new fic! but... with my NOTP as the main pair.

I guess that's the curse of liking rarepairs and having NOTP juggernauts...

It's really weird but for some reason in Tiger & Bunny, even though I ship both of them with someone else as close to OTP as you can get, I for awhile thought the prospect of Kotetsu/Yuri was interesting. There's a lot of potential for intrigue because of some shared aspects of their childhood and whatnot. I even wrote a little story that included it! Then cour 2 of T&B2 happened and now every time I see it, it for some reason makes me really upset. I don't even know why. (And no I don't say anything about it to the people who are creating content for their ship, because they can ship whatever they want. I just, for some inexplicable reason, am now upset by seeing it, and that's on me. :P)

So I guess I have a NOTP now and it's something I myself wrote in the past, lolololwtfself.

I don't tend to have them or squicks in the purest sense though, because almost anything or any ship... if the author presents it in an interesting enough or reasonable way, I am not opposed to it.

NOTPs>
-Boku no Hero Academia: Bakogou/Midoriya JUST NO. I can see the appeal, but for me former bully/bullied person ships are the worst. (I also ship Bakugou only with Kirishima and Midoriya only with Uraraka Ochako - but Ochako is my fandom bicycle)
-Doctor Who: The Doctor / Any Companion (with the notable exception of Vislor Turlough). I HATE IT. Also, my absolute OTP is Doctor/Master, so I side eye almost every other ships involving these two.
-Castiel/Meg: NAAAAAH. NOOOO. I love the idea of Castiel experimenting with women, especially when human, but I hate the idea of him ever being with Meg.
-MCU!Bucky/Natasha: they're my OTPs in the comics, but I fucking hated the idea of them ever being a couple in the MCU (so glad that possibility died). I can only read MCU!Bucky as a closeted gay man so any couple of him with a woman just feels wrong with me.

MCU: Steve/Tony, Steve/Peggy, Bucky/Natasha, Vision/Wanda, Sam Wilson/anyone male, Loki/anyone.
Star Wars: Finn/Rey, Finn/Poe.

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Usually, when something becomes aNOTP for me, it's because I've had too many encounters with overly entitled shippers acting like assholes, and that goes up exponentially if they act like competing shippers are somehow morally bad people for their tastes in fictional characters.

Squicks: Rimming, watersports, scat; emotional manipulation in ongoing relationships; jealousy being portrayed as romantic (especially when that jealousy is expressed as a violent attack upon the love interest); femdom where the dynamic is Awesome Lady pegs and doms the pathetic, inferior male; service topping; doms/tops in BDSM being nothing more than life support systems for the sub's needs and kinks with no inconvenient needs, desires, issues or hang-ups of their own.
