lol

That was about my reaction, too. Really hope they're trolling.

As someone who sometimes struggles to identify sarcasm, I’m pretty sure the “srs” for “serious” is the giveaway

Just remember people are writing out their fantasies. It's not a reflection of reality at all.

Its the fic, friend. I did the same thing, until I realized I was comparing my relationship to relationships that didn't exist, and never actually would, either, because they were the always-perfect inventions of their author's imaginations. I also realized that the old saying "comparison is the thief of joy" was true. I know its tough/odd sometimes but honestly reminding oneself on a regular basis that fic and irl are two very different things helps a lot. Good luck, nonny.

I have to stop and take a break from fic now and then because it starts seeping into my brain and setting up unrealistic expectations for relationships and the world in general.

Huh....
A lot of the time, the 'ships I wrote in fic (and read) were ones that would make my skin crawl off my body (lovers can read each other's thoughts? cuddling for hours in bed? hell to the fucking NO), so that wasn't ever an issue.

Plus, I guess, being IN a 'ship since I was...15? kind of gave me enough RL info that i was never going to mistake fic for life.

I'm sorry you're feeling disappointed, OP - I hope you can find an irl friendship or relationship that satisfies.

Hm, I can't really comment on this without knowing which fanfics you're thinking of ... but the range of what people expect from their relationships (or conversely, consider "expecting too much from their relationships") is vast.

One of the things I find cozy about certain fanfics is that they involve much more emotional closeness and affinity and respect between family than I find in pretty much any American media. And that doesn't seem unrealistic to me, because I am close to my parents and brother, and was close to my grandparents, and a lot of the typical sources of conflict just weren't issues in our multi-generational house. Alternatively, I also like reading fanfics written by people who can imagine positive relationships between people in other roles that I've only ever had bad relationships with. What I've experienced directly is such a small part of what can exist and what is real!

There is a fine line in fanfic relationships between 'super close' and 'pathologically co-dependent', and fic writers often lean towarda the latter just because intense loyalty and obsession is easier (and often more fun) to write than complex dynamics and emotional boundaries.

If you want to cleanse yourself, I'd recommend reading a few relationship advice columns. Sam Savage comes to mind (even though I know some don't like him), just to get a sense of the wide range of relationship dynamics that exist out there and how real people actually negotiate through relationship issues.

Meanwhile, I'm over here writing fiction where the characters I ship don't even get together because they have their own unique flavors of cowardice. Whoops.

It took me a long time to realize this is the reason why fanfics appeal to me so much.

It's because it's fiction and especially as a writer I can write the most perfect relationships, whether they be romantic or platonic. I can make my characters go through so my pain and grief and drama, but I always know I can write the perfect ending to make things good again.

In reality, life is unpredictable and full of unfairness. Knowing that real life isn't fiction was one of the first steps in accepting that my life is what I make of it, not what I think I should get.

Enjoy your fics, OP. But also, maybe do some inner work to figure out what's going on IRL too. Best wishes. 🍀
