I have apps to keep track of shows/movies to watch and books to read. As for when the last time I started something from my list...yesterday (which was technically only a couple hours ago). I don't tend to rewatch/reread things so pretty much everything I read/watch is from my lists (unless, of course, it's new episodes from shows I already watch, or new books in series I've already started).

Different anon, but the other person who replied has it... either wrong or outdated!

Asexual/ace - uninterested in sex, may be interested in romance
Aromantic/aro - uninterested in romance, may be interested in sex
Aroace - uninterested in sex and romance

All these terms are on a spectrum, of course, but those are the simple definitions as I know them

I'm sure information about how safe it was was heavily manipulated to the people it was sold to. You have no idea what obviously stupid shit you're capable of believing if a skilled person tells you it's true. I hope you all experience the karma that comes from thinking you're so much smarter than these people that you deserve to laugh at their deaths.

By karma I don't mean your own death, I mean you falling for something everyone else knows is fake and being laughed at for it.

I just don't feel sorry for billionaires with more money than sense anymore with how they keep making things worse for the people under them.

Naaah they have death waiver. Sorry not sorry

I don't know if it's cultural or I am just that lucky or I talk somehow funny. But couple of times when I was talking with my friend minding my own business standing to the side. There were this jerkasses who decided to repeat some of the words I were saying. Just wtf

That sounds like a variant idea of the trope. But the original idea of Hanahaki, and indeed the version vast majority of fics use, is unrequited love. I've read a version once where it was about the sufferer's perception of their love interest's feelings (it was always requited, but the sufferer had low self esteem and couldn't believe anyone could actually love them). But in it's most classic form Hanahaki operates on the "if this person doesn't return your feelings you will die" idea.

Not smoking.

Everyone and their idiot brother suddenly suggested that smoking would make me skinnier and less uptight. Granted, this was during the seventies, but still...

(Anonymous) 2023-06-21 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
I heard it's the other way around. Originally hanahaki was about the flowers as a metaphor for unspoken confession that would be cured if a confession happened, but it changed into a more literal disease that comes from unrequited love.... But my source was Twitter and might have been someone trying to make the trope origins sound less problematic so they could enjoy it with a clear moral conscience.

None of the characters look prepubescent, so I guess this is the usual casual racism against Asians for being shorter and thinner (and sometimes younger looking) on average compared to other ethnicities?

Given how pressure works and knowing the sub wasn't properly tested, my money is on a quick death anyway. It would need to be a decently-made vessel to last a while.

Not being able to eat overly spicy food. Basically in the way of "lol look at the basic white bitch who can't handle spice". Doubly annoying because I actually LIKE spicy food but massive acid reflux problems run in my family and I'd rather not feel like wanting to claw my stomach and throat out thank you very much.

I would assume they've only seen clips. Because TBH, same. There are a lot of movies I've only seen random YouTube or Tiktok clips of and it feels like it's particularly common with mob stuff.

+1 on Dalton being the best Bond and +1 on giving Flash Gordon another go

The first time I went to the ob-gyn in my early twenties (general check up, I'm aroace and never felt the need to go before and just wanted to get the basics checked) he made fun of me for still being a virgin. I was already anxious as fick about the whole thing so getting made fun off didn't help. Needless to say I didn't go there again.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-21 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the idea was that they don't owe the sufferer anything, and that's why it's tragic. The concept of flowers growing inside a living person creeps me out, so I don't look for hanahaki in general, but there is a story I like a lot where it's basically the same but a curse instead of a disease and no flowers, the sufferer will simply die eventually unless their love is requited before then. The sufferer makes sure to avoid the person they're in love with as much as possible and not tell anyone about their condition because they would rather die than have the other person be guilted into loving them.

Mine didn’t make fun of me, but she didn’t believe me when I said I was a virgin and physically hurt me a lot more than necessary because of it.

NA

Yeah, I saw the same thing but on Tumblr, which ... doesn't mean much.

I also like the variant where it's just any secret / emotion in general, and the hanahaki stops when you confess / admit it.

Making your lists in a Moleskine is giving them that feeling of luxury and importance that they deserve!

I've been picturing this as the sub from Cameron's Titanic. But seeing the pictures and reading the TechCrunch article listed above... Hmm. I'm trying to be sympathetic to their plight but now? I hope their estates have to refund all the search and rescue efforts.

Also, they really called it OceanGate!? I thought *we* were calling it that because it was somehow controversial that this happened. WHAT!?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-21 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
no offense but adult Asian people don't look like that either. They definitely look like how anime normally draw teen/young adult protagonists.

No... they're all just dumb. The CEO of the company that made it was on that thing even though the director of operations said it was a deathtrap.

I've never read a hanahaki story with the confession variant. ...Which doesn't mean much either.
Though I can't see how it makes much difference since protagonist suffering in silence is the main draw of this.

It's less creepy PUA/incel when some OTHER person doesn't HAVE to fall in love to save their life. Just stop being a little bitch and confess like an adult. Problem solved, with no requirements on the other person to respond positively.
