An attempt at rationalization that came right from the characters' mouths sounds so cringe, I can't believe people do that. Like how is that not just embarrassing as hell to write? How do authors type that out and think... yeah, that'll convince people my ship is OK. Yeesh.

All of that, yes. I hope they are all just very young authors, but probably not.

That ... sound equal parts sad and hilarious. I'm sorry, anon.

Your preferences are entirely valid and seem to be fairly popular. However, you seem to be ascribing negative motivations to others for liking something you don't like, which is a bit ironic under the circumstances.

Personally I love ships with complicated, ethically dubious dynamics, but I'm not into them for the toxicity itself, nor am I into fics that brush aside all the very deep-seated issues, and emotional and psychological brambles the relationship entails for the characters.

That intense thorniness is the main feature for me. Make that shit as fraught as you reasonably can without it tipping into melodrama.

No, I don't want obvious, preachy justifications in my fanfic, and yeah, there is such a thing as too much realism for me. But in general, the whole appeal of ~problematic~ ships for me is how complex they are, and how hard they make my brain work to figure out a viable way forward for the characters. I love the emotional insolubility; the psychological gridlock; the societal minefield.

Oh lol I dislike this for like, the opposite reason. If I'm reading about ~problematic~ shit I want them to own it. Get all the way into the fucked-up-ness of it, not be like "oh it's actually fine because reasons". Ignoring it seems even more boring than handwaving it imo, but to each their own I guess!

I read this Ladybug/Hawk Moth fic where Ladybug defends people's right to write in-universe Ladybug/Hawk Moth fics, opposing the strawman who says RPF is bad. I found it incredibly awkward.

That... feels so OOC? Like write your pro-RPF-but-not-RPF fanfics all you want but she would not say that alsjalsdkj

I've never understood the point of taking away the appealing aspect of a ship, problematic or otherwise, if you're out there fundamentally changing the basic framework of a ship then... why are you even into it in the first place? It makes no sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
This. When I like a fucked-up ship, it's always BECAUSE it's fucked up. That's the whole draw. Take that away and I wouldn't be into the ship in the first place.

The self righteous in-fic justification sounds annoying and insecure. But I don't agree with you on disliking psychological drama. When I read darker fic, I love fics that get into the characters' emotions and mental states! I guess cause I find it an interesting character study, and because I read stuff like that for catharsis, so the more psychologically involved the better, typically. I do get what you're saying about wanting a fantasy to just be a fantasy without bringing realism into it, I've definitely felt that way about some fics that I wish stayed more in the realm of fantasy. I think it's a matter of personal preference and what draws you to reading about heavier subject matter in fiction.
