"Clearly" lusted after April May and was turned on by Maya? What??? None of those evidential points about Phoenix being into women are true except the Dollie one. They're as much the result of you reading what you want to read into things as you think Wrightworth shippers do.

Lusting after April May:
April: Tee hee! You know, you're cute when you blush.
Phoenix: (Believe me, this is the first time in my life I've blushes this much...)

Maya in a maid outfit:
Maya: Well? How do I look?
Phoenix: ... Maybe you should quit being a spirit medium.

Feelings for "Dollie":
Phoenix: You really are the person I always thought you were. Even after Dahlia Hawthorne was found guilty... I still believed in you.
Iris: ...... Thank you.

Jean Armstrong flirting:
Armstrong: No one 'as answered my advertisement [looking for a new waitress]. Oh, poor moi!
Phoenix: (... Please don't eyeball me while you say that.)

Max Galactica flirting:
Max: Oh! It's my two sweeties! Welcome to the Detention Center!!
Phoenix: (... *sigh* Did he just call me his sweetie!? AGAIN!?)

Snippets of Edgeworth being Bad At Emotions:
"... Say something, Wright. I'm not good at small talk."
"Thanks to you, I am saddled with unnecessary... feelings." [he specifies in his next line these are NEGATIVE feelings]
"Whooooooooooop! Detective Gumshoooooooooooe!"

Edgeworth doesn't want to marry:
Judge: You should never underestimate the power of love. You'll understand one day when you get marri--
Edgeworth: Which I won't!
Judge: ............
Edgeworth: Exactly what is so wrong with wishing to remain unwed?!

Edgeworth doesn't understand romantic love:
Phoenix: Ah, but, Mr. Edgeworth, you're forgetting about the power of love.
Judge: Yes, the amazing power of love...
Edgeworth: Not this again...!

Thanks for showing up to prove my point!

Seriously OP, if you think blushing (also "first time in my life" would mean this is not his normal reaction to hot women) and thinking someone looks cute in a certain outfit = lusting, that's on you. Yes, even taking into account that these are being played as anime tropes and not "what would it likely mean if a real person behaved this way" (because I've blushed at attractive people and admired a nice-looking outfit on a nice-looking person tons of times, and I'm hella asexual). They're standard "Put the Celibate Hero in an awkward situation" tropes, and if Phoenix were meant to be "lusting" here, they would've played out much differently.

1 could be interpreted as an attraction kinda thing, yes, but 2? Sounds like something a friend might say jokingly as a praise.

Feelings for Dollie are pretty canon, but you do sound like "I don't believe in bis" .

Jean Armstrong was trying to turn Phoenix into a waitress and Phoenix was uncomfortable with the idea, to say that's flirting is farfetched at best. Not a lot of discomfort at Max either, his way of calling everyone a "sweetie" IS funny though (you wanna know who gay panics a lot more when they see pretty flamboyant people? Apollo Justice) .

Edgeworth's aversion is why I get your interpretation but I can see some people think it's defensiveness and "exactly why he should fall in love and marry!" which is a thing for some shippers. And it does happen sometimes both in fiction and RL anyways

1. You can blush if people make you uncomfotable as well, doesnt mean he's ~lusting~ after her.
2. Maid cafes are a thing in Japan and probably pay better than being a spirit medium, also, telling his friend she looks good in a maid costume isn't exactly the "rawr she's so hot" thing you think it is.
3. Being attracted to women doesn't mean he cant be attracted to some men as well. Bisexuality isn't a strict 50/50 affair.
4. Trying to turn Phoenix into a waitress isn't really flirty at all.
5. Do you also think southern people who call everyone honey and shit are flirting with everyone they meet?
6. Von Karma brought both him and Franziska up to be emotionless machines for his own purpose. That doesn't mean he doesn't understand them, it means he was conditioned to not HAVE them. So to him, all emotions register as "bad".
7. Not wanting to marry doesn't mean he can't be gay- this is a Japanese game where gay marriage isn't a thing. Not to mention plenty of people don't want to marry.
8. This one doesn't mean at all that he doesn't understand romantic love, it just means he is fed up by Phoenix AND the Judge spouting dumb phrases at him and being unprofessional in the process.

Just going to throw in that the "Dollie" thing to me just made me all the more sure Phoenix is gay and just hadn't recognized it yet and may even have been in denial.

I mean, my foremost example: the thing where someone suggests she excused herself to use the restroom, and he's like "My pretty Dollie doesn't poop!" Does this sound like an actual relationship? Or just desperately clinging to a fantasy? If he doesn't want to imagine girls having normal bodily functions, does it sound like he wants to have sex with her? ("She'd get dirty!")

His entire treatment of her came off to me like "look everyone I am with a *girl* and dating a *girl* and in love with a *girl* and everything is perfect and pristine and there is definitely nothing unusual about me at all, I am in a very normal and fulfilling relationship with a *girly girl who wears pink lace*!"

(And yes, years later it was probably a relief to find out that it wasn't that girl who had made an attempt on his life, and she actually had been fond of him. Also: Of course he always believed in her. Phoenix's WHOLE THING, at least pre-AJ-era, is trusting his gut and believing in people despite all evidence (literally!) that he probably shouldn't.)

Thanks for stating the obvious but necessary!

I could see this if AA were a more realistic series about realistic people, but I don't think the writers understand common closeted behavior with that type of nuance. It is exactly what it looks like, a guy completely infatuated with a girl and it's played up to the nth degree for comedy because AA does that with everything.

I'm not the OP, I ship Narumitsu and I see Phoenix as bi. I think your take is interesting as an alternate interpretation of the text, it's just clearly not what was intended.
pantswarrior: Phoenix's stupid hat covers up the fact that he still has lawyerbrains. (pw)

Totally fair. I also am guessing that's not what they intended, honestly, but given the way he's so fixated on Miles throughout the rest of the series I was like "...yeah, I'm not sure I buy this" and ran with it. XD

At any rate, alternate interpretations are fine by me! Honestly don't hate OP's headcanons on their own either. It's just that when anyone gets judgy over headcanons and saying that theirs is ACTUALLY canon that I start to think it's not worth having discussions...

(Actually kinda missed AA discussions. There's so much absurdity to play with in these games...)

DA - I do think it was intended for him to come across as a silly guy in a pink sweater with a "puppy love" and very immature about it back then. Not that it was intended for us to read that as "oh, he is closeted" but rather "oh he is immature" and with immaturity comes lack of self-awareness and such.
