GNC how, and faves?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the secret about a woman character who may or may not qualify as gender non-conforming, depending on how rigidly feminine you expect her to be, I want to know what other nonnies' takes on "gender non-conforming" here look like! Bonus points for either things you've seen or things you do that seem particularly out-there, compared to percieved social expectations.

Holga from the new DnD movie, she's a buff warrior woman who is muscly and doesn't wear a-typical feminine clothing or make-up(the actor is wearing make-up because it's a movie, but it's very minimal 'natural' make-up without obvious mascara/winged eyeliner etc).

Zarya from Overwatch, who is also very buff and not dressed a-typically feminine clothing or armour.

Scorpia from She-Ra kind of? Only in the sense that physically she's not a tiny, delicate waif, but her clothing choices are feminine so I'm just going off body-type there not her personal aesthetics. So she might not count.

... Other than that I have a very hard time thinking of female characters that are remotely GNC leaning. Most on-screen women retain some form of hyper-femininity even if they eschew girly things as a character trait, and most of them don't say anything about it at all, they're just dressed in feminine clothes/make-up as default.

I also fixated on Holga's unshaven armpits *_* woof

I love that Desire in Gaimon's Sandman is gnc.

Alanna of Trebond is a little gnc, though not extremely.

Loki in myths is fun.

Does Janet in the Good Place count?

Desire is not a gnc woman so much as something like genderfluid, though; show Desire uses they/them pronouns and is played by a trans actor, and comics Desire uses it pronouns and can take on the shape of anyone the viewer desires.

Sure, she's/he's/they're not a gnc woman, but they are gnc. The question didn't specify gnc women, it just said gnc.

I don't consider her gnc, but hoooo boy do the incels HATE Aloy's character design in the Horizon series. They say she's too masculine 'cause a warrior woman in a post apocalyptic society doesn't pluck her eyebrows, or wear make up, or smile all the time, have perfect skin, etc, etc. Actual character vs what incels want here:
https://uploads.dailydot.com/2021/05/horizon-forbidden-west-character-design.jpg

If that's gnc, then so am I cause I don't do that stuff either.

Have these dudes ever seen a woman in real life before

Sometimes I think the last contact they had with actual female anatomy was weaning at the very latest and more likely when they were pushed out of their mother.

Mac from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is definitely on the GNC side - she's a doctor in the 1920s who is openly a lesbian, and wears men's clothes.

The Bride from Kill Bill. Most of her climactic boss fights are with other women (while a lot of less plot-central fights involve men), and they are all choreographed as "two people who know what they're doing try to kill each other and it's fucking scary to watch," as opposed to the ridiculous, pathetic spectacle that usually passes for "a girl-fight."

I am apparently GNC enough to get mistaken for a man now and again, but it seems to just boil down to "short hair, no makeup, wears jeans all the time."

For a film example, maybe Vasquez from Aliens?

This used to happen to me all the time. Occasionally to my brother, too, because he's got the most fantastic curly hair. Doesn't phase either of us. Then I moved to a part of Europe where women with short hair are way more common, and people tend to guess right.

I think it's a culture thing, because the few times I've seen someone get it wrong (with someone else), they seem embarassed? While Americans often seemed sort of disappointed if their not being able to tell didn't embarass the person they misgendered. Very different vibe.

I feel like Susie on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was pretty GNC, and an excellent character.

One of my favorite characters, Kara Thrace from BSG, was somewhat on the GNC side, though she also didn't seem to mind putting on a dress and a bit of makeup for a special occasion. I never got the impression she rejected femininity altogether, so much as that any sort of performative femininity was the polar opposite of a priority for her most of the time, and also, she seemed to favor a more typically masculine style of interpersonal relating. She was most comfortable with aggression, assertiveness, and bravado, tended to act impulsively, and struggled with emotional intimacy.

None of the characters listed are GNC, according to the rubric in the secret.

Well, the point of the thread seems to be developing a conversation that started from a lot of anons disagreeing with the premise that the character in Rogue One was gender-nonconforming. The secret OP just claims she is without explaining how they're judging that. "She's like me" is not exactly an enlightening descriptor to a space full of people who don't know who that anon is, or what that's supposed to mean.

The female lead from Maiden Holmes. Sort of. The actress was incredibly demure but the character was working a traditionally male job, first in disguise and then openly after intervention from the Emperor. She kept up the job well after she got what she needed from it, and her clothing by the end was an interesting blend of masculine lines and feminine colours.

All in all, the whole drama was an interesting exercise in 'so you just found out your friend/coworker is living in the closet, what do?' that I liked a lot.

And Shisan/Shishan from Love and Destiny. Character was a merfolk who changed gender when he fell in love... and she then insisted on remaining v. big and burly, but also wearing flowers and pretty dresses while lugging a halberd around. It was interesting because there were other female warriors in the setting, but they were more delicate-looking and just wore plain armour, so Shisan stuck out a lot. And got flack for it, but stuck to her ways. (Yes, I adored Shisan.)

Pidge from Voltron. female character who doesn't look feminine and has no interest in romance and no one treats her like she's weird for it. stay away from that fandom tho.

Male example, and GNC because hyperfeminine, but Killian Murphy's character in Breakfast on Pluto. Patrick "Kitten" Braden.

For the female identifying GNC characters... I've seen both Mac from Miss Fisher and Susie from Mrs Maisel mentioned by others, and big yes on both of those, two great flavors of GNC lady!

For male identifying GNC characters, also two *very* different flavors, Max Klinger from MASH and Miles from Bright Young Things!

And I also love Desire, for being both/neither/all of the above.
