I wouldn't go this far, but... yeah, still being Big Into the wizard series is a red flag.

Like there has to be some nuance, or you get the "one person on Tumblr staff had Drarry fanart in their header, therefore that person is a terf and any moderation against harassment campaigns on this flimsy basis proves that the rest of staff is also terfs" kind of thinking.

But also. How can people not even be a little skeeved out?

Re: SA

If someone still has Drarry fanart in their header (assuming the blog is still being posted to and not just abandoned and unchanged out of laziness) I'd be weirded out just because it's so old now. What is it like 20+ years old?

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The header of my blog is for a show that's ten years old. I still regularly post about it. Exactly what is the "weird" divide for being a fan of media property? When will my header weird you out? Has it already happened? What date, exactly?

Uh, is it about two preteen boys in love that you've been obsessed with and still are now that you're 30+ years old?

If so, yes it will weird me out anon and for p good reason

AYRT

I'll ship what I want for as long as it entertains me, thanks very much. You can go be weirded out in a corner.

But we all know that THAT isn't what weirded out AIRT. They mentioned ages of characters not at all. They mentioned the age of the media. So why are you trying to derail?

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
You are really offended by one anon on the internet thinks is weird, tbh. And yeah, I was gonna think it was weird whether or not I had your permission, y'know.

And uh it's kinda implied in "Drarry" which is generally not set when they're adults.

You want to rock a 20 year old show in your header? You go for it. Have you seen me complain that someone has the original Star Wars? Nope. But if you're gonna put up, as a grown adult, romantic fanart of teenagers from a children's book in your blog, uh.

Kinda weird.

Go ahead and defend it some more, though.

NAYRT - Tell me you know fuck all about Drarry without telling me you know fuck all about Drarry, lol.

Also, everything AYRT said is spot on, and you're a nitwit.

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh right, to be clear, the "old" was in reference to the ship (of children in a childrens book that we have all far outgrown in years) not "old" as in reference to canon. Drarry is old. Aged badly, at that.

Your anger about being called old or weird is funny though. As a fellow old, you gotta learn to not care what rando anons think.

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, they weren't kidding when they said we were in a literacy crisis.

Ok. So lets break down exactly what is going on here.

First off, I don't go here. I am absolutely a fandom old and HP was out well after my childhood. It's not my thing. My ten year old fandom involves dudes in their 40s, so to have a lot of people throwing "omg they're teenagers you perv" at me is hysterical. Y'all got some kneejerk reactions going on here that you really should talk to a professional about.

The whole reason I got involved in this conversation is because A) I'm seeing more and more people try to push fandom elders out because it's "weird" and women aren't allowed to have hobbies and they should be taking care of kids or keeping house or doing their taxes or something and B) this idea that fandom has an expiration date.

"I'd be weirded out just because it's so old now. What is it like 20+ years old?"

So what? People still fan Star Trek and Star Wars and Dracula, etc etc etc. Why are you getting your panties in a twist and being weirded out by someone being in a fandom 25 years younger than those? That was the point of my questions. Do you have some expiration date on your fandoms? Is that a precedent you really want to set for yourself and others? Why?

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Drarry was the seventh most popular ship of 2022 based on AO3 stats, and AYRT seems to think the characters are their canon ages in most of the fic (spoiler: that is not the case). AYRT is either exceptionally ignorant and totally oblivious to how much of an ass they're making of themselves, or they're trolling.

You're getting super super mad about a comment about a ship involving children being old, and keep insisting on reading what I said the way you want to read it instead of what I just told you I meant.

But yeah I'd say my fandoms that involved shipping canon teenagers which Drarry absolutely is, most def had an expiration date and I'd find it weird if I were still obsessed with them at my age.

Damn, sometimes I feel like the only fandom old that got more relaxed as I got older. Someone thinks I'm weird for thinking something? Ok, shrug.

This is super amusing to me ngl

Also "header that features an old show" is not the same as "header of slash ship fanart of a ship usually involving young teenagers" and why would you even read it that way?

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Because the person I responded to didn't say anything about it? Did you read it at all?

Literally - "I'd be weirded out just because it's so old now. What is it like 20+ years old?"

Where does young teenagers come into this?

And even if it was about young teenagers, why do you care? I'll ship what I want, thanks very much.

Re: SA

Plus it's common for HP ship art and fic involving the students to be set when they're grown up, so "Drarry header" could easily feature adult Harry and Draco. (Not that it matters how old they are, but HP is a weird fandom to assume they'd be their book-canon ages in.)

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like read another book, for real.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Tbh I think most Harry Potter fandom stuff that's currently popular is fairly divorced from the books and is largely it's own thing

Like all the youths in Marauders fandom, that stuff barely comes from the books at all

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Listen, I'm not big into HP anymore, but "read another book" is not the smarter-than-you-because-I-read-so-much sounding advice you think it is. I have friends who read over 100 books a year and still participate in fandoms for their favorites of all time, and some maybe not so favorites but books that have lots of fandom potential. It's a modern, silly, capitalist mindset that has invaded fandom in very recent times that we must be constantly throwing out the old to make room for the new, and that still liking anything after a few months means that your tastes are old and stale.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Are there no books they can find that are better than the ones written by a terf? Like none?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
Not everyone agrees she's a terf.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Oh, she's totally a terf.

It's just that not everyone can control their hyperfixation. It's very neurotypical of people to be like, "well just read another book!" Maybe my brain won't let me, Susan.

+.5

I didn't choose this.

But, you know what, it's actually fine. Even if I could choose it, and turn my hyperfixation on and off at will. Because liking a media property /= thinking the creator can do no wrong. Fandom is not for JKR. It's for US. And it's okay, and fine, for fandom to be for the fans, and not the creator, it's okay for us to carve our place in it and refuse to leave.

If you refuse to interact with people who are still into HP, that's your call, you can interact or not interact with whoever you choose for whatever reason you choose. Sometimes it's a stupid, grandstanding reason not to interact with someone; sometimes it's anxiety or bad experiences because you ARE trans. You could also choose the middle ground of proceeding with caution around HP fans, or outright asking them about their opinions. It's your life, do what you're comfortable with, as will I. (For instance, I do not knowingly interact with people who assume negative things about me as a person based on the fic I read/write.)

AYRT

YES! I was specifically responding to "ReAD aNoTHer BoOk" but you are absolutely right that what you like does not say anything moralistic about you as a person. And anyone making those assumptions is a dick. It's like saying all horror fans are stupid. All true crime fans are Karen bootlickers. All romance fans are twits. Objectively not true!

OP, you can choose not to interact with whoever you'd like, but you can't make any kind of judgement about someone just because they like a media property without being a dick.

Something something book by its cover something.

That too.
