I have to agree when the fic sticks to canon-compliant genders and relationships.

But if the fic has a healthy amount of trans characters (at least one, and in a way that would piss jk off) then I feel safe around that author in that respect.

It's not obligatory to know anything about a creator in order to create fanworks about a fictional universe. Not everyone is on social media, and a lot of HP fans don't know the first thing about JKR, nor do they have any obligation to do so when all they're doing is smooshing Harry and Draco or whoever together in silly fanfic.

By the very definition of fair use, HP fanfic gives nothing whatsoever to the author and in 99% of cases don't ever mention her or her assholery. JKR gets zero profits, her TERFy nonsense gets zero platform, so renouncing all fanfic in some random fictional universe entirely removed from teh author demonstrably does nothing except make you feel better about your own moral superiority.

Let people enjoy their fictional universes in whatever disconnected-from-the-shitty-ass-real-world way they want to.

Orson Scott Card wanted people to march in the streets and foment violent revolution should gay marriage become the law of the land. That's how deeply bigoted he is, and yet everyone has somehow managed to separate 'Ender's Game' from him, including LGBT people for whom the book had deep meaning.

I don't understand why Rowling, who hasn't said anything nearly as hateful as him, is so untouchable that continuing to like 'Harry Potter' makes someone irredeemably bad. Then again, it's also kind of a fringe opinion, so oh well.

But I’m like that with anyone buying official merch. I’m into Lego and in most of my circles it’s uncommon for anyone to buy HP Lego (or if they do, they don’t post about it or have the sets visible as part of their main collections). The few who have openly continued to buy HP stuff are people who were already on the cringey side. Most of them have been frozen out over the last year.

If they're not giving her money or additional publicity (just going over the old stuff), I really don't see the issue here. I can't say that when I read the books it suddenly gave me anti-trans opinions. I mean, if the books read as anti-trans propaganda, I'll get more behind your POV, but if they are, it's very well hidden. The only instance I can think of is the scene with Boggart!Snape. I've read them several times and I'm still to this day very much pro-self gender identity determination and will always support the politics/charities which help trans people gain true equality. I don't know, death of the author is still a thing to me.

I can't buy from people who have HP stuff in their shops now. Maybe a couple years back when they would have been getting rid of old stock, but at this point if someone has an HP design sticker, it doesn't matter what else they have, fandom or original, I just... I cannot trust like that.

I think it's one thing to find comfort in people renouncing a popular thing to protest it's creator but it's another thing to assume people taking part in fanfic for it (a usually non money making activity) .


There's lots of reasons people who disagree with JKR ,trans ppl and nonbinary ppl like me take a small comfort in taking back something from her with transformative work . Mocking those people or accusing them of agreeing with JKR for writing fanfic even if they still don't give a single cent isn't at all achieving anything but being a male asshole .

Remember your view isn't the only correct one. If they're not giving money to the Terf they're not giving her money .

As a Trans Person(tm) I really wish people spent half as much effort doing anything that actually helps trans people in any way, as they do arguing about Harry Potter (in either direction).
I don't give a shit if someone is still a Harry Potter fan. As long as you can acknowledge that the author is a massive dick and you're not giving her money, it doesn't really matter. (I do think it's an annoying fandom for an overrated book series but lbr that was already true before Rowling went mask off, and it's not a reason to harass them.)

To be honest, OP, a lot of people don't care what JKR believes in, or, worse, agree with her. With all due respect, it is naive to think that people can't be nuanced. People can be pro-trans and don't like JKR's beliefs but still want to read HP. I'm one of them. It's belief in "death of the author". Actively insulting anyone who likes HP doesn't help things at all.
If you want to help trans people, then there are more productive ways to go about it, than picking on people just wanting to have fun. (Because, like some of the others here, you're tbh coming across like a bully, which is ironic considering JKR also comes across as one).

I have normie "trust the neoliberal system and everything will continue to be 'ok' because this is the state I've always known" friends and I've accepted that some people just don't fucking get it/aren't worth the effort to engage in any real way when it comes to pushing back on bigotry/injustices.

They will continue to mindlessly engage in HP shit, official and unofficial. They're not going to go out of their way to support trans people, much less pay attention the trans community.

All I can really do is not engage in that shit.

When my friends are talking about HP I just stay silent. If they ask me questions, "Oh dang, I didn't/don't know. I don't pay attention to Harry Potter stuff anymore." And just continually say, "Yeah I just don't pay attention to it anymore," until the topic changes or they stop trying to engage me.

Like, anything outside of this, I just don't want to get involved. It's such a shitshow when it comes to high school wizards.

Here's one with no disclaimers: I've been in fandom long enough to have been accused of immorality for many reasons, starting with ignoring the wishes of the author and writing about sex between men, and I long since decided the moral outrage makes no difference.
