I believe you aren't from the US because only people outside the US who have no idea how fucking huge the US is, assume that you can easily drive anywhere to meet anyone who isn't already super close by lol

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? I still haven't managed to meet up with people who are on the other side of the state line! Meanwhile I've got friends in Europe who are like 'yeah I was in another country over the weekend'.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What state are you in, because you can do half a dozen states in less than six hours if you live in the right place.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me you failed US geography without telling me....there is more to the US than just the east coast.

There are many states you can drive for 10+ hours in a certain direction and still be in the same state. In some states you can drive over 20 hrs and still be in the same state.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
They said half a dozen, not "most of the US."

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me you'd rather be needlessly condescending on the internet than actually pay attention to the comment you're being condescending about, without telling me any of that.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
Outside of the US, nobody studies 'US Geography'. Lol.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Inside the US we learn the geography of all the continents except Antarctica. Sorry about your educational system.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol the US American thinks they have a better education system when it comes to anything non-US related.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Since when? They gave us a geography test in the 11th grade back in the late 90s. A lot of people failed. Because we were never taught geography...

That depends heavily on the school district and who's on the school board.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
+1000

Most of the conventions and meetups are in major cities, with all the congestion, traffic and expense that major cities in the US involve. If you don't live in or near one of those major cities, it can be at least a long day's drive to get there or much longer, depending on where you're going. That's not easy, especially if you're driving by yourself because you live in a small town, small city or rural area where no one else shares your interests.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Fly in and take an Uber, it ain't that hard dude.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? Why's everyone talking about lugging their cars around in this thread about road trips?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Because OP specifically mentioned roadtrips in the secret.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you missed my sarcasm there, lol

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It is, though. Flights are not cheap, nor are they easy - especially if you don't already live in a major city. But if that's your argument, then sure, with a generous budget, OP could do the same.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You fly Cape Air from your local field to your local hub, and yeah it is pretty fucking cheap. Probably cheaper than the Uber's surge price that kicks in when the flight gets in.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, please tell me how easy and cheap it is to fly from where I am to a major city, because you'd totally know that better than I would.

To OP: Many, many Americans do not live in a major city with an air hub. Many, many Americans also do not live someplace with easy transportation option such as Uber. It's called "rural America". But of course, that's probably not what you were talking about, because you specifically mentioned roadtrips in your secret, and most of the people responding to this thread are addressing your actual point instead of trolling.

Flying is also very expensive in the US, to the point where it's usually less expensive to drive, and once you get there you still have hotel costs.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
LOL what? Driving any sort of significant distance (unless it's what you can drive in a single day) is honestly not going to be any cheaper than just taking a flight.

A flight from Miami to New York costs about $170. That's around a 20 hour drive, which means you're going to need to stay overnight in a hotel, so $90-100 for that unless you're okay with staying in some shitty roach-infested motel. You're going to need to eat dinner at the very least, so assuming you get cheap fast food, that's going to be around $15. So already you're running at least $105 for the trip even before the cost of gas. And then there's the fact that you need to allot two days of time just to the traveling part, which means you have to take an extra day off for that. If you work hourly, that's an entire other day worth of lost pay.

When you add all of that up, it's going to be at LEAST $170 if not more.

DA

IF you can fly. Some people have to run the cost/benefit analysis of flying while disabled. God forbid the airlines follow ADA laws.

Miami is in no way rural America. If you're out in the heartland it could be a couple hours of driving just to get to an airport, so that just drives the cost up further.

Also, those fares are for the cheapest economy flights before paying for food, checked (and maybe even carry-on) bags, seat assignment, etc. And there's parking or other transportation to and from the airport. I think that there's at least a hundred dollars more of hidden expenses there, if not more, depending on how much convenience you require.

Really, America is so huge that each person needs to do their own math. For some, driving is cheaper, for others, obviously flying is going to be so much better, and the convenience might offset any money saved. And then there are the outliers, with service animals or disabilities or other mitigating factors.

This. Not to mention it's a lot more of a hassle to fly post 9/11 than it used to be, with longer lines through security, more invasive pat-downs, and of course, the very real possibility of missing your connection. I hate it when that happens. :(
