You all are so annoying.
It's still easier to ride 20 hours than fly for 20 hours and then ride some more. While managing currency where this fucking ticket to a con is half of your month's work. Oh. You are in rural USA? Now try being in rural Russia, China, Brazil or Australia. This countries are So mUcH sMaLlEr.
Also managing your fucking timezones is a bitch. Oh, I have so much fun having to learn when I need to post my fanart to get more than couple of likes /s Oh I just liiiiiiike coming here and make a comment in a middle of your night and never have a normal conversation.
OP was frustrated and bitching and people going "but America" on them is a top clown behavior

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
And as it turns out, OP does seem to be from rural Australia so all the clowning about 'you just have no idea how big the US is and how hard it is to travel between towns' is hilarious in hindsight. Australians know exactly how hard it is, because it's HARDER in Australia. Smh.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Just because it’s easier in America vs Australia doesn’t mean it’s actually easy in America. It’s just easier than it is in Australia.
OP didn’t say in their secret that they live in rural Australia and didn’t say they were jealous that it was easier, they stated that it was easy. And it isn’t. You can untwist your panties now.

It is absolutely piss easy in comparison. Just statistically speaking, lots of English-speaking people online live in the US - I would be overjoyed to live a two day drive away from them. And because there's more people and more resources, there's more events. Online fandom events are scheduled with American timezones in mind. Fandom in general is more active when Americans are awake. And Australia is not the only place in the world where people will be frustrated by this stuff - it's not my fault that everyone interpreted "I don't live in the US" as "I live in Europe", lol.

I'm honestly surprised people are SO upset to hear this?

For me, it's the idea that the only issue is distance. That America is a first world nation. We have no real public transport, no money, no guaranteed time off. It's NOT easy to move around the US, but for reasons other than those lamented by OP. I CAN'T go to "so many cons and meetups and events" in one "easy road trip" because all that shit costs money and time, which are nice things that we can't have. And that doesn't even get into the worries about a mass shooting.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Look, I'm obviously sympathetic to that, but I'm poor, too. People are poor in other countries. And it's much easier to afford the time and expense of a two day drive than it is a three day drive and a two-leg flight.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
But that's the thing, it can be a two day drive to get out of fucking Texas. Two days back. Time spent there. No PTO. So not only are you spending money to go somewhere and do a thing, you're actively losing money you could have made during that time.

Sure, people are poor in other countries, but they also have health care, and gov mandated time off, and public transport. All of these things make it infinitely easier to travel.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch. Plenty of countries have a worse health care situation than the US, are worse for workers, etc. I know you're probably thinking specifically of Australia (though I still think it's much harder to get from, say, Alice Springs to Chicago than Dallas to Chicago, even factoring in time off etc) but I'm being inclusive on purpose, because fandom doesn't only exist in North America and Aus and Western Europe, there are fans all over the world in all kinds of situations with government and safety and infrastructure. I'm also not trying to say the US is perfect - I'm actually very glad I don't live there. But there is actually more stuff there. It is, actually, more convenient to live 20 hours away from a friend than to live on the other side of the world. And the US IS massively privileged in the global community, which is frustrating - even more frustrating when Americans refuse to acknowledge it and act like you're doing them some great wrong by expressing that.

What you're not getting is that Texas has a population larger than all of Australia. Australia, which is roughly the same size as continental USA but divided into only 8 states/territies, and has a population concentrated on the coast.

Basically, driving from a rural area in one of the 6 absofucking huge Australia states/territories is like driving out of Texas, but multitudes less populated.

For reference, Texas (biggest US state after Alaska) is 695,662km sq, where as Western Australia (Aus's biggest state) is 2,529,875km sq. By my maths, it could actually fit both Texas and Alaska. And that's with a population of 3 million people. The scale of remote in Australia is just different.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

The 'Texas is big guys you don't even know' comment is still pissing me off so here are some size comparisons for you:

Victoria (AU's 2nd smallest state): 227 444km sq

(There are about 6 US states bigger than VIC and smaller than Cali that I couldn't be bothered to list here)

California: 423,967km sq

Texas: 695,662km sq

New South Wales: 801,150km sq

South Australia: 984,321km sq

Northern Territory: 1,347,791km sq

Alaska (largest US state by size): 1,723,337km sq

Queensland: 1,729,742km sq

Western Australia: 2,529,875km sq

In case you were wondering, Australia has a population density of 3 people per sq km, which is lower than Canada's 4, and significantly lower than the US's 35.

Australia may be a first world country, and metro Australia may have some of the highest living standards in the world. But like what I said in my previous comment, one you're further away than a few hours drive from a major city, things are different.

Guys, I understand that life can be shitty and going to a con is not always as easy, I really do. But I am just going to laugh in Russian.
Cool, you worry about mass shootings and I worry about drone attacks, my country arresting me for being gay, having no money for mental health situation I am going through, shitty health insurance with doctors going TO FUCKING WAR even the most nazi shitheads never especially wanted. AND on top of that no fan cons. And I am actually pretty privileged more or less.
And I am not just saying this to cry about my sad life, I am saying that a lot of people from all over the world have problems, you are not exactly unique. But you are unique in being language and cultural center of the world. So in some aspects it's easier.

Also there is this, yup

Another NAYRT

Look, as an Australian I love living here. I live in a metro city that is a few hours drive from Sydney. And even in that situation there is just not a lot of fandom stuff to go to. Like, people who don't live here I don't think *get* the smaller scale of events that happen here because the population is so much smaller. Or that there are 'small' US towns that are considered big cities here. And because the population is smaller, the online communities are much less open, because it's pretty easy to work out someone's identity when the subculture communities are so small.

And I'm in a best case scenario. Someone who lives in regional or rural Australia might live a day's drive from the next rural town. And that's on top of not having an online community in your time zone. And that's not even getting into it being a legitimate issue that there is worse healthcare and job prospects in regional Aus than in metro Aus.

It's definitely 1st world problems (though, depending on how remote OP that might not even be completely true). But having a fantasy of having an online community that is a few hours drive away *is* a fantasy for some people, even if that fantasy isn't that good in reality.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don’t think anyone is upset to hear this though? OP assumes if they lived in the US it would be easy to go to cons and meet up with friends. And Americans are pointing out that isn’t necessarily true. And OP is bashing Americans for dispelling their fantasy.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean - there are more opportunities for cons in america.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
There are more opportunities, but they are far from equally available to everyone.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It's like telling the homeless person how lucky they are to live in New York. Like, sure, New York has a lot of great stuff, but the homeless aren't getting to enjoy any of it.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-21 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's nothing like this though. They made a broad generalisation that most people agree is generally true.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-21 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks to me like it's actually "most people not in the US agree is generally true". So... people who haven't actually done it. We do have one person who is from Europe who had to do a road trip in the States, and surprise, surprise, they agree with the Americans....
