I fucking hate when we call teenagers fucking pedophilia because it lets scum like Josh Dugger slide under the radar. If it's all pedophilia then a 15 year old and a fourteen year old fucking is just as icky as a 15 year old doing what Josh Dugger did. And it fucking isn't. We've kind of ruined the word for any kind of real meaning and that's a goddamn problem. We've done a conservative christian and I hate it.

I don't think using "ephebophilia" is the answer I just personally hate you. You tar-pit.

Also we should focus more on actual predators with children... and not crack down on every pair of teens who get horny with each other as long as there was consent (and if not their guardians are looked into)

It does come off as Americans centering their sensitivities and mores as usual, but anything that makes writers feel comfortable isn't something I can be too mad about.

I'm less understanding when those same writers, and readers, lbr, get judgmental when other writers want to follow canon events, including sex/romantic scenes involving minors, and then accuse those writers of being child molesters, or supporters of pedophilia.

Like. Minors having sex is canon (*cough*Skins*cough*)? The same canon your stories are also based on. So why aren't you calling the original work pedophilic? Why are you a fan at all?

It's possible to be uncomfortable with it without thinking it's pedophilia that harms real minors. Some of the things I'm a fan of have parts I'm uncomfortable with or don't like, and I would probably work around those things in fic or just not include them if possible, but they're not enough to make me not be a fan of the canon.

Hard agree. As someone who likes anime (which has a tendency to have high schoolers. And people ship them) I see it happening too often lately and I don't really get it. I mean, isn't it better for an adult to enjoy non-canonical written sex scenes between handdrawn fictional teenagers than pretty much any other variety of teens having sex lol?

If you want to age them up then do it. If aging them up makes no difference at all (oh! suddenly they're in 3rd year of high school not 2nd year and everything else is exactly the same) I assume you're an American trying to not get in trouble with the law.

It's weird because there's absolutely no practical difference between a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old. You don't magically gain the wisdom of the ages at midnight on your 18th birthday. You're going to be exactly the same person you were before in terms of maturity and overall mentality.

Not to derail into politics, but it's darkly amusing to me that right wingers LOVE taxation without representation. Sure, ten year olds can work at meat packing plants and pay taxes, but god forbid they vote. You should be able to vote at 18, or when you start working, whichever comes first.

*shrug* Personally, I say good for everyone for doing whatever makes them comfortable and whatever yields the most enjoyment for them.

I ship Starker, and I've tagged for Peter being 18+ before, because I knew it would make a fair number of potential readers more comfortable to have that information from the get-go.

I guess I might roll my eyes a bit if it was a teen show and the teenage characters were only having sex with other characters close to them in age, but there was still a tag that was like, "Everybody's 18+". Personally I do find that a bit silly. But hey, if it's what makes the author comfortable and/or makes their readers inclined to click through, then good for them.

Okay, but Starker is an American couple in American media and Peter Parker had canonical ages varying from teens to 20-somethings. OP specifically talked about non-American characters.

The really annoying thing is that the US does not consider writing or drawing material with people under 18 having sex to be pedophilic or child sexual abuse. But Australia does. Even though our age of consent is 16! So a 16-year-old can have sex with an 18-year-old but if they send the 18-year-old a nude pic, the 18-year-old is committing child abuse.

Because writing or drawing is not child sexual abuse?? No child is being harmed, which is why it's not considered a crime. Comparing it to a loophole that /does/ involve real people and real situations doesn't quite fit, unless that law somehow applies to drawings as well.

For the record, I wasn't talking 10 year olds, I was talking English 16/17 year olds, where it's totally legal in that country, but they're aged up for countries the age of consent is 18.

Reading things like 'in my HarryPotter universe, they start school older than in canon, so they're all over 18 during 6th year. They're not underage during this!' just makes me very annoyed.

Where as 'Harry and co went back to do 7th year, (as 8th year students) so they're all over 18 in this story' doesn't bother me at all, because it makes sense story wise.
