I don't ship them (noromo for life) but yeah, Scully was just such a great lead character and at the time there were very, very few female leads (who weren't on majority-female shows) who got to be actual leads rather than subsumed into the male character's stuff. Or had to be the sexy one - Scully dressed like an actual FBI agent! And she paved the way for a lot more characters like her.

Actually yeah, most of my M/F ships are characters who never got together and were obviously never intended to.

Same! It makes sense when I think about it, if the woman isn't intended as the love interest, then she's much more likely to actually be developed as a character and be more interesting, which makes me more likely to ship her with the guy.

But so many things have women that solely exist as love interests, they don't give her a personality (or give her a "perfect" Mary Sue type personality), put her with the guy almost immediately, and I end up hating it.

This is a really insightful point.

You've got to have a female character who's either written as not the love interest, or who's written as the lead*. Otherwise, she's going to be flat, which means there's nothing there to ship.

*There are het ships that work precisely because the woman is the main character, and the male character has been conceived as a love interest for her. The fucked up thing is the fact that male love interests typically get proper development, whereas female love interests don't. I get so depressed thinking about it. Women want to date people; men want to date sets of holes.

Both really good points, I think this is why I find so many mainstream M/F romances in media so offputting. It's either Sexy Lamp or Manic Pixie Dream Girl, and reminds me uncomfortably of how many guys still think it's weird and gay to love and care about a woman beyond how sexy she is.

OP to secret maker

Thanks for making my secret!

Not that weird! I feel the same over my ships. If what made me ship them is their Canon platonicaly feelings, I don't have a desire to change it.

The only thing I dread is killjoys that will be annoying about me shipping characters that are platonic in Canon. Being it m/m or m/f.

I feel this, I do this a lot. I love when we get platonic male/female friendships, but I also end up shipping them a lot because friendship to romance is one of my favorite tropes. Then again, I'll also often ship male friendships and female friendships as well.

I feel you-- I ship them BECAUSE they had such a good friendship and partnership! And a LOT of m/f relationships in shows don't get that, and I get turned off of couples who don't seem to like each other or even know each other??

(current favorite actual not-at-all-romantic m/f friendships on TV... Steve and Robin from Stranger Things, and then Mabel and Oliver-and-Charles on Only Murders in the Building. I loved Dean and Charlie on SPN even though they did her so dirty... I wound up really loving Nami's friendships with Zoro and Luffy when my sister got me watching the new live action One Piece. And... watched Harlan Coben's Shelter and really liked the friendships Ema had with the two boys as well. I feel like I'm forgetting one here, like there must be a book or something that I'm blanking on)

I was too young to watch X-Files when it was big, so watching the early episodes as an adult after the fact, I was amazed at how...kinda normal Mulder was? Like obviously he's a conspiracy theorist and a bit odd, but after all the caricatures over the years, the lack of exaggeration was surprising to me. It made sense how he and Scully interacted, they were adults and professionals in their field, and treated each other as such.

I'm sure as it went on, that changed, but still, it was refreshing how well they worked together and played off each other.

They were a great team long before they went canon. I like watching competent people who compliment each other working together (with some fun moments of abrasion sprinkled in).

Anyway, I recommend Elementary.
