How do you feel about shows/movies/games that are just endless angst? I hate them. I don't mind dramas but I need my heroes to occasionally get a win.

I'm a self-professed hurt-comfort bitch, but I have a limit. I'll read 40 chapters of a juicy angst fic, sure, but at some point if it keeps going with no healing/comfort/catharsis, I inevitably lose interest and never go back.

Endless angst is boring. It's the individualized version of the banality of evil.

I don't mind dark stuff. But I need happy endings. Or at least somewhat happy. So, Game of Thrones works but I can't watch Handmaid's Tale. It is just so helpless.

In fanfic, I only read happy endings.

I love dark stuff and unhappy endings, but when it's just wall-to-wall misery it loses me a bit. There needs to be some levity to make the bad shit have an impact. This is the main reason I didn't get on with The Last Of Us 2; it was literally a constant influx of bad shit and bad people and bad choices to the point it felt almost comical.

I like some dark stuff but there's definitely such a thing as really overdoing it. People should get what they want once in a while.

Endless angst doesn’t work for me unless there’s hope and a happy ending. Real life is too depressing, I don’t need it in fiction.

I love endless angst if the characters experiencing it are likable.

I need well placed humor to get through the dark shit. If not, at least some glimmers of hope somewhere.

Do you finish whatever media you are enjoying before delving into fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I am having to stop myself from getting into a bunch of new fandoms as I've started 3-4 new shows. Just because I already have such a long backlog of fics saved. ;_;

Re: Do you finish whatever media you are enjoying before delving into fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-17 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends how much more canon I have ahead of me. I try to avoid spoiling myself if it’s something that doesn’t have a lot of depth, but if I’m on book 7 of 15 and shipping hard, I’ll go look for fic. I’m usually better with shows and movies, but that could be because I read a few hours a day but only watch maybe 30-60 minutes of anything most weeks. If I get really into a show that will jump and I might watch a whole season in a week or two, but watching anything always takes a backseat to pretty much every other activity.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the media. I refuse to binge, so if it's a tv show, I'll go look for fic written around/about the episode I'm on or earlier. Same thing for a movie series. If it's a book series, I don't really care, I'll read all the fic. For video games, I absolutely have to be done before I'll read fic for it.

Re: Do you finish whatever media you are enjoying before delving into fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-18 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to get spoiled from fic so I want to finish things before I dig in. Unless there is a culture of clearly tagging where a fic takes place. Or if the fandom is so old I can sort through fic that came out before the unfinished bits of canon.

But also that assumes the canon can ever be finished. Hashtag Comic Book Fan Problems.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-18 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I want to read our watch a decent amount of the canon before I read fic because I know I'll get spoiled.

What are your favorite creepypastas/online horror stories?

Re: Based on 7

(Anonymous) 2023-10-17 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This might not fit since it’s an urban legend that predates widespread internet use but I do come across it online a few times a year:

The urban legend backstory for Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight. I first heard this in 1989 when a classmate at my new school told me. Supposedly Phil Collins witnessed someone watching someone drown at a beach. PC was too far but someone was very close and just watched. PC wrote the song in distress that night at his hotel and the next day had first row concert tickets delivered to the person who watched the drowning and then premiered the song at that concert, pointing to the guy from the beach at the line “I was there and I saw what you did, saw it with my own two eyes.” The guy freaked and tried to run away but security grabbed him and handed him over to the police.

'My Dog Was Lost For Three Days' has stayed with me for years. Idk, it just ticks a lot of my creepy boxes. https://someordinarygamers.fandom.com/wiki/My_Dog_Was_Lost_for_Three_Days

I've always loved Candle Cove.

The Russian Sleep Experiment has a bit of a dramatic ending but I liked it as well.

Psychosis is a fantastic read that holds up today.

I'm someone who was never entirely into creepypastas growing up other than the odd one I would come across in a post on LJ or early days of Tumblr - with the latter, that's how I came across the Russian Sleep experiment story (which I had believed to be real when I originally read it haha).

But I did like a recent video by Hazel and Mae called 'a normal creepy pasta retrospective', which is pretty much an alternative reality/tribute to creepy pastas that exists and that I had fully believed was real (despite the description stating that its all fake lol :'D me and my gullible ass). Mainly because Hazel sometimes covers obscure media; so I was ready to believed that this was stuff that I just didn't know as a outsider to the fandom - even though there was one early in the video that I had thought "huh, that sounds a lot like Jeff the killer... oh well! That's just a coincidence I'm sure." That and I like this twist nearing the end of the video too.

If you have an hour to spare I'd recommend it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xhhql_gpDY

There's also a 'behind the scenes' to how they made the video that I thought was interesting as a side by side - although I will warn its about over two and a half hours long and sometimes they ramble a little. It can be found here:

I really liked Slender Man. Marble hornets fucked me up!

I'm also kind of a baby.

There was that creepy pasta reddit podcast. The No Sleep Podcast. There were a couple that I loved: The one where there's a children's play place out in the woods that no one remembers but the narrator is looking for. He eventually finds it but then talks to a man and wife who found it previously and the man made a bunch of sacrifices because the wife scared him so much. Then there was the one about a little werewolf child on the swings. Look, a single image will stick with me! It was evocative. And finally, there was one about a bunch of bus passengers who get snowed into a bus stop and it becomes clear they're going to be stuck there for a *long* time and it's going to get bad. I actually stopped listening to that one because I felt like no matter how it ended it would be a let down.

Absolute favorite is... the title was something about the importance of having good manners, but it was this town where there are like neighboring People In The Woods (fae vibe) who wear masks, so everyone has to also wear masks if you go out walking because something bad happens if they see your face? I'm like... I am not summarizing it well but it was really good.

Didn't finish one bc the two characters had my birth name and the name of my best friend and every time I'd start reading it I would get too freaked out to finish. Normally I'm *fairly* horror-proof, like I will seek out horror content in the middle of the night to get cozy with. But that one just hit the heebie-jeebies button

Work vent

(Anonymous) 2023-10-18 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have learning difficulties and I’m learning new things at work. You can imagine how much fun it is. I hate feeling stupid, I hate being looked at like I AM stupid. It’s not my fault, it’s the wiring in my brain. I need to do something several times before I can confidentially do it on my own.

I have told them about my learning difficulties. My coworker seems to have all the patience in the world but she’s looking at me like ‘you should know this’.

I don’t. I’ve only been here a week and a half give me a fucking break.

Life Vent

(Anonymous) 2023-10-18 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I handmade some outdoor/camping gear. They weren't perfect items but they were an example of craftiness and thrift. I only used them a 8 times a year (ish) so I lent them out. And now they're lost. I don't want to get mad because the person clearly feels very bad and shit happens and they were literally made of waste material from other projects but STILL.

I mourn.
