"How dare they leave out the dysentery and pubic lice! Doesn't anyone care about accuracy anymore?" Those people exist, but I personally am fine with fewer body lice and open sores (and less rape) and so on when I'm watching a fun fantasy show.

And man, I don't even go here, but "Anne Rice vampire novel" =/= historical accuracy.

I have my share of "historical" hangups about fantasy shit and I could see how the show writers not actually thinking about how changing Louis from a white to a black dude might lead to lazy writing or giant plotholes or whatever, but also the vitriol aimed at raceblind or deliberately racebent casting is so often nastily ott...

Exactly!
OP saying it like they found out some epic hypocrisy, but it's not.

AM YISRAEL CHAI.

It's not, but when it happens to Jews/Zionists/Israelis/Americans that support Israel that may or may not be Jewish, then 50% of the world thinks it's okay.

+1. Murder is the only one where I can say okay, generally a big no but circumstances make a big difference (life or death situations, self-defence, etc.)

But I'm really struggling to picture a scenario where someone might go "yeah actually, that torture/rape/genocide was actually justified. Murdering someone in self-defence might be the only reluctant way out of a rare but very serious situation, whereas the other three imply a level of sadism and deliberate cruelty beyond just trying to survive.

Murder, torture, rape, genocide - none of these things is wrong as a matter of course. There are occasions when each one of them makes sense.

In that case, this was slightly icky phrasing if you're not even sure yourself. That's a really wild statement to make without something to back it up.

Canon and fanon are two different things.

Re: wtf

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
A canon ship is kinda forced on the viewer, yes. You don't have to actually ship it but it's still canon.

I will always rec Mononoke. Still one of the best anime around.

I mean... I can kinda understand situations where torture would be on the table - if someone is part if a group that intends to kill a lot of people (like in a terrorist or military atrack) and someone has to get relevant infor

+information out of them to try and prevent it.

Oh hey, that's my mates fic! Amazing to see it here 🙌

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
No but if a ship is canon it's still forced onto the viewer by being canon. You don't have to ship it but that doesn't make it any less canon.

LOL The ways people get so angry at the reverse white washing.

It's another flavor of the people who said that - for example - Aang in the live action Avatar film had to be white because "Most people in Hollywood are white anyway" and/or "Asian led films don't make any money anyway" and/or "the majority white audiences can't connect to a lead who isn't white also".

I find the Arknights reddit not too bad, but it's very focused on what's hot at the moment. At the moment the current/next big banners in both global and CN are highly anticipated female NPCs becoming playable, so I don't expect anyone to be talking about anything else for a while.

you can't be racist against whites in any kind of meaningful way, hope this helps

Oooh. Napoleon, definitely. I hadn't realised it's due out so soon.

Project Hail Mary. I've read the book and listened to the audiobook. Now I'm halfway through the book again, and am agog for the movie. I was like that with The Martian, too. I love the old-school sci-fi approach.

Except that's bullshit in at least half of the countries in the world (where white people are not the majority). Hope you get over your western centric echo chamber views someday.

What bothered me about this race swap is that original Louis was so deliciously hypocritical with all his "oh my, the angst because I have to exploit/destroy the lives of humans to survive as a vampire" while being a slave owner.

Exactly - vampire chronicles series?!

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
There's a whole Vampire Chronicles universe. Just have Lestat meet this much later in time black character instead of changing Louis.

AYRT

My intent wasn't to say that I personally believe that; it was to say that it seems to be the view of many I've come across in the recent past. All the subsequent thoughts and questions are me trying to figure out how they could have arrived at that conclusion, and despairing at the fact that they have.
