Spoilers

How do you feel about them? Hate trailers? Avoid them like the plague? Don't care? Love them?

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I call them background information.

They make sure I know I only spend my time watching and reading stuff I know I'll like.

The only time a "spoiler" ruined a show for me was when it revealed something I would have hated anyway. It was the show that ruined itself, the spoiler just meant the showrunner didn't get to "gotcha" me because I quit early.

Love them. Don't care about being spoiled. Doesn't ruin media for me. I don't think anyone should be forced to be spoiled if they don't want to. But people should be able to be spoiled if they want to.

I actively look for spoilers sometimes. Especially if there is a character I hate on a TV show and I want to know if they will be around for long.

They're useful. Looking at spoilers for Days of Our Lives tells me which episodes I can skip.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Love them. I only have so many spoons and there's way too much media out there, so I want to be sure I'll get the emotional payoff when I invest time and attention into something.

Re: Spoilers

Depends on whether or not I actually want to see/read the thing for myself; otherwise I don't mind most of them with things like sitting through someone's youtube essay or seeing posts in passing on sites like Tumblr.

I do avoid trailers like the plague for films I want to see because so many have spoilers in them (which I really don't understand why that's a thing at all).

back in ye olden days of the internet (90s-early 00s), spoilers was really the only way I could keep up with some series since we had to deal with buffering and YouTube wasn’t around for anybody to make 4 parter clips of episodes.

so I don’t care for them or mind them.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Love them. I've not read/seen a spoiler that has ruined anything for me ever. Most of the time they actually make me want to watch/read something more or convince me to try it (a la "Okay, so this extremely future favorite shaped character survives the story" or "Oh, yes this interesting looking ship actually gets together and there is a happy ending for them!" etc.)

(The ONLY exceptions are murder mysteries, but the only thing I don't want to know there is who did it. Everything else, I don't care.)

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on what the info is and what it's for.

Like... a trigger warning is not a spoiler to me, even if the thing being warned for is plot-integral or meant to be shocking.

If I'm going into something I either don't care about or care about enough to be anxious, then I don't mind or might seek out a spoiler beyond trigger warnings-- though I tend to seek out very vague 'X gets a happy ending' (or doesn't) type spoilers rather than a blow-by-blow. If I don't know whether or not I want to watch or read something, I might read extensive spoilers so I can follow a convo about them with someone I know who does really care-- and if the spoilers make it sound really interesting, then I might get into that thing myself!

But, I am NOT okay with unsolicited major spoilers. If I am reading a book, do not come up to me and ask if I know who dies yet-- if I wanted that information in spoiler form I would have sought it out myself! And if I'm excited for a movie that has a mystery, then I actively avoid spoilers.

I never minded them. I actually enjoy knowing about them so I can try and find anything that foreshadows it.

I don't want to be spoiled for something like the twist in 'Crying Game'. I rarely find trailers spoilery. I don't actively search out info about upcoming stuff so that I'm awash in spoilers, but it happens sometimes. Eh. Not soul-crushing.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I like them if I'm deciding to watch or not. I avoid them if I'm already commited.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't seek them out because I'll only get the experience of watching something blind once.

But when I am spoiled I usually don't mind. And if I do mind I'm almost grateful that I can drop something with a disappointing ending without wasting more time on it.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on the media. A lot of movies and shows have such thin plots now that the full length trailers can spoil every single thing that happens. And some video games are like that, too. My partner is playing a game that I plan to play when I have some free time. But there isn’t a whole lot to the game so they’re not allowed to tell me a lot of things about it and I won’t go look at certain locations they unlock or characters they meet.

If I start a book that seems iffy and I’m considering not finishing, I’ll look for spoilers. That’s kept me reading some and spared me from some others. Otherwise, particularly for multi-book series that I know I want to continue reading, I avoid spoilers. The most enjoyable twists I’ve encountered in media the last 10 years or so have all been in books and I want the full emotional impact.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care, really. Sometimes I'll even seek them out if I'm curious. If a movie or TV heavily relies on some kind of twist ending to be interesting, chances are I won't enjoy it, anyway.

I love spoilers! Knowing something in advance actually helps me pay better attention to a show or movie.

i love them, and sometimes i seek them out to see how badly wikipedia writers who write the summaries for movies and shows understand the media. sometimes it's great and they make connections i never would have made myself. and sometimes I wonder if they actually watched it.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the piece of media

90% of the time, I don't care about getting spoiled and will sometimes seek out spoilers just so I know what's coming up. Or in TV shows I'm binging I'll spoil myself so I can decide whether to skip episodes that look bad.

Maybe 10% of the time, where I think it's something really good and I trust the creators and the storytelling, I'll try to actively avoid spoilers. But that's what it is - it's an act of faith in the storytellers.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I am okay with them and sometimes seek them out if I'm on the fence whether to watch/read something to figure out if it's worth my time (or if I'm just curious what people are reacting to). But I'm usually still surprised because I sort of automatically stick them in my short-term memory and so don't remember them until I actually get to the spoiler part. This sometimes works against me when I've decided I didn't want to watch/read some media because of the spoilers, then later that media comes up again and all I can remember is that I didn't want to watch/read it, but not why.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Total spoilerphobe. Having something spoiled does ruin whether I'll enjoy something. Honestly thinking about it, the only movies I've enjoyed watching in the past 10 years are the ones I went into blind.

Now, not every promo or trailer is a spoiler, I know that. Just suggesting the plot or only putting the best one-liners in the trailer isn't a spoiler. But I don't watch trailers because it usually means going out of my way to find one - if it's not in front of a movie I'm seeing at a theatre, I won't see it. I'm fuckin lazy. But don't run around the internet telling me all the twists and surprises, which can include actors cast (reprising a role from someone who should be dead or whatever) or little details. Just leave the surprises alone. Let people who want to seek that info out find it but don't splash it on every fandom subreddit banner or whatever. I can find that info later after I've pleasantly enjoyed the surprises and would like to know more.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Really depends on the media in question for me. There are some things where I actively seek out spoilers and other things where I don't want to be spoiled at all.

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. For example I've spoiled things about my favorite show because I was impatient and looked couple of things up. And frankly I am sad because I really would like to know if I would had got this plot points myself.

But it's rare. Usually it doesn't matter. Or sometimes I need them to decide if I want to watch at all

Re: Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mostly indifferent to them. My memory isn't as good as it used to be so I could watch a trailer and forget that I even watched it when I go watch the movie later. Like, I often watch films now and be like, "Holy shit Sam Raimi is in this movie?!" And he's like, third billing.

The only time I get a bit antsy about coming across spoilers is when I'm actively into a thing and I don't want to find out because that's part of the fun.
Like, recently my best friend and I got into The Bear. I've told him I don't care about spoilers (he tells me full plots for films and TV shows all the time), but recently I had to tell him not to spoil season 2 of The Bear for me because he finished it before I did.

He spoiled who Carmy's mom is for me and I was a bit upset but then I forgot 😅 so when I watched the Christmas episode I was like "Hey! This actor and that actor are in the show!"

I love the reveal of certain actors' cameos/appearances on the show so I am very cautious of The Bear spoilers.
