What weird eating stuff do you do?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
When I have rolls and mashed potatoes, I like to make a mashed potato sandwich with one.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
But does anyone complain about that? No. A male character can be as shallow as a dinner plate and fandom will talk about how wonderful they are.

But you don't have to trawl through "millions of TV shows and movies" to find good female characters. They simply aren't that rare.

Sexism is not saying, "this is a good character, but I hate it because it's a woman." Sexism is having different metrics for what makes a male or female character "good," such that few, if any, female characters ever clear the bar. And that sexism is typically not self-aware; it's people telling themselves that the reason they hate all female characters is because every single last one of them is written terribly. There can't possibly be any other reason.

Oh man. I love arranged marriage. How hard is this fandom to get into?

I have.

And with Korra especially IIRC the producers actually wanted to do more with their relationship in the show but were told by the company that they couldn't, so you can't even really put the blame on the creators there.

Yeah, that's a big distinction that people like to gloss over when it comes to women and violence on screen. Most female characters getting "whumped" are actually getting abused. Male characters get whumped, but they aren't in the process usually overpowered or helpless, crying at the pain or the fear. Male characters get whumped explicitly to show off their masculinity, toughness, and prowess. It's a power fantasy both ways: men are stoic and tough; women are cowering and crying, and purposefully and distinctly Not Masculine - in fact, the whole plot for most horror/action movies with a female protagonist is that she has to be in pain and fear to shed her femininity and thereby becomes more masculine to defeat the villain. Which leads to a lot of basically "abuse porn" because the abuse is her "character development".

And then people call misogyny when you don't want to see a woman get abused for entertainment.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Cool, then you're a distinct minority.

"I'm mostly in fandom for the porn."

"I'm ace."

Words have no meaning.

A lot of foods I have to eat separate. But thanksgiving foods are eaten together: one bite each of turkey, mashed potatoes, corn caserole, and stuffing.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, yeah you do. Because not everyone has immediate access to the same media. Shocking, I know, but people live in places you don't.

I'll agree that anyone who hates all female characters is probably misogynistic, but the amount of well written female characters varies widely depending on where you are and what media you have access to. Cause, surprise, it will cost time, effort, and money to look at other stuff... Kinda... kinda just like I said....

Do you... do you think ace people don't have sex drives? Also notice the "emotional or otherwise." JFC. Learn a thing before you open your mouth next time.

And that sexism is typically not self-aware; it's people telling themselves that the reason they hate all female characters is because every single last one of them is written terribly.

This is exactly it. Sexism is when when people decry a female character for being terrible and badly written, yet when a male character displays the exact same traits, somehow they're interesting and nuanced.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think there are plenty of good female characters, but I tend not to feel fannish about them.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
But men absolutely do like seeing a man who empowers himself by getting back at and conquering those who "whumped" him. And they like seeing it in the context of what we would term hurt/comfort, where a male chatacter is being supported by a loving partner, or by a group of comrades.

Whereas women don't seem to want to see it at all, and don't seem to want to see themselves at all, "whump" or not.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, gosh, it's so good that you're fandom in general, rather than a single person who isn't necessarily representative of a general social trend.

AYRT

Well... if you don't already know about the Chinese Wuxia genre, it can be a steep learning curve. I came into MDZS with zero knowledge, so I was a bit confused for a while. There are lots of blogs explaining things for westerners and the official translation has cultural notes in the back. The show(s) might be a bit more work, since you either have no reference material or would have to go find your own (I watched The Untamed with a character guide). But really, once you get the ancient culture down, you're basically gold for any story in the genre. It opens up a lot of stories with the same tropes!

I eat my food separate (veg first, then meat). I pull burgers and meat pies apart. I also dip my fries in my milkshake.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Where do you live that you lack access to any media involving good female characters?

Re: What weird eating stuff do you do?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's not weird! I do that. Open a roll, insert mashed taters and gravy if you have some. Nice little sandwich.

I like to put my french fries on my burger. I know of only one other person who likes to do that.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
They're on the internet right now, so by default that claim is bullshit.

Ehhhh it's rarely ever _him_ who gets "whumped", it's his wife/girlfriend/daughter/dog so that he doesn't have to suffer the indignity to get his revenge, and even if it is him, the anon above has explained quite eloquently how it's never quite the same as when it's done to a female character.

I think women would absolutely love if they got to be the avenger/rescuer without themselves suffering the requisite sexualized/fetishized abuse and disempowerment they seem required to have to be allowed to take on that role.

GOT had everything I wanted, sometimes all in one long, plotty, complete fic. I drifted away after s8 but have gone back to read some old faves and a couple fix-it fics because I love fix-it fic in general and GOT is the canon I thought needed them the most.

Ace people with sex drives aren't ace.

"Asexual" is a complete lack. That's what the "a" prefix means. This idea that it's a "spectrum" or that someone can have sexual impulses but not be sexual is nonsense from ordinary people who want in on being queer.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-28 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're dismounting that fandom spaces are roughly divided by gender. Female dominated spaces (which usually have more production of relationship focused fanart/ fanfiction) have tonnes of m/m content because [insert decades long discussion about why women like slash here].

Male dominated spaces [which I'll say typically focus more on general fanboying, non-relationship focused meta and character based fanart] have a lot of fanboying of male characters, amd bashing of female characters, but there is also a looooooot of obsession over sexy female characters.

To summarise: AFAB fandom spaces don't whump or woobify female characters nearly as much as male characters because they also aren't as interested in writing romance/smut about female characters. AMAB fandom spaces in contrast are obsessed with the waifus they want to bang.

TL;DR: Yes, sexism is at play, but it should not be discounted that a lot of character focus is about who the fans want to bang.
