NAYRT, and same. My country only really dubs childrens' media, because dubbing is expensive, especially if you want competent actors, and adults can read. A LOT of the kids' shows on TV are cheaply dubbed and sound pretty bad, while the higher budget stuff uses the same handful of good voice actors. So I usually watch my cartoons in the original language, be it English, Japanese, French, or Tagalog.

Glad I could help!

No, it was a good idea. It was just poorly executed. Especially the X-Men/FF/MTVU elements, which were there just to be Worfed. It kinda worked with Xavier, because we had this familiarity and attachment to his character, and they made choices with his character that was consistent with the previous portrayal, but as an introduction to the Fantastic Four and Inhumans, that was just bad. It is hard to take a character seriously as a hero and an actual intelligent person when they went out so easy and like such a dummy in their first introduction. It doesn't show how powerful Wanda was, it just shows how much of a useless moron Reed Richards is. Even the redshirting of Captain Carter was better handled, and her power is she can punch really hard so it was never even a contest there, and she still got a better fight against Wanda.

Wait, is NiF actually (based on) BL? I never watched it because I was under the impression it was another show with het only romance.

Yeah some language also simply don't work well with the lip synching so I more often than not find it massively distracting.

But the other reason he can do that is because he has superpowers that give him extraordinary strength.

The idea isn't that superheroes are defined by nothing but their powers; it's that the possession of powers is at the core of their characters, and it's what makes people choose to read or watch about them rather than read or watch other types of fiction. All fictional characters have a narrative and emotional logic to them, and many have as aesthetic logic, as well. The reason someone goes to see an MCU film rather than, say, Manchester By the Sea is because they want to see an action flick where powerful beings use their magical powers to solve problems and fight one another.

TIL Christian Bale is not an American

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Listen, you're lying to yourself if you think 9/10 of the people whining about dubs aren't weird as fuck about the original languages. It's weirdly nationalistic and isolationist to me.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I joked about this when I went to see Greta Gerwig's Little Women and noticed that the four lead actresses were English, Irish or Australian. They couldn't find four American actresses for this classic American story???

I was also weirdly amused to notice that two recent-ish movies involving The Manson Family (Charlie Says and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) had Charlie portrayed by English and Australian actors. Are Americans not good enough to portray our most notorious criminals? LOL.

I've seen it in a lot of social media spaces that aren't tied to fandom.

From what I've observed, most of the people talking about this appear to be American.

Subs all the way. I physically can't comprehend dub lovers.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol you dumb fuck, I don't care why other people don't like dubs I'm primarily speaking for myself. You, though, are showing an astounding lack of knowledge about dubbing in countries other than your own considering you can't seem to grasp the simple concept of there sometimes simple not BEING a decent dub.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the the novel was initially published on a BL site.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it was especially noticeable around that time, but it’s a pretty constant thing. American actors do little to no formal training and actors have pretty limited range. In Europe and Australia, and Canada to a lesser extent, it’s very common for actors to study and train for years. And they are exposed to loads of American media so learn the accent often before any formal education. Typecasting still happens but it isn’t the norm like it is for American actors.

I think anyone crying about it is just jealous because they secretly think they’re perfect for the part of only they’d just been discovered.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I never knew. Thanks!

It took me took long to realize I misread this as doms vs. subs. *facepalm*

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there is or ever has been a dearth of quality American actors and if there were, how would it be a problem? As long as there are decent actors (of whatever nationality) appearing in decent quality media then everyone gets their entertainment fix and no one cares.

Maybe this is a Sturgeon's Law most of everything is crap kind of deal where there are a lot of crap actors and that blinds us to the fact that there are also good ones.

Or maybe it's like when 20% of the room is women people percieve the crowd as having gender parity and if it's more that 20% people think the crowd is majority women when it quantifiably is not. People might be emotionally overestimating the "market share" of foreign media in the US and foreign actors in US media.

What should the rest of the movie be about?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Also agreed about Mulder's hair. It's infinitely pettable.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No Sunday update?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It will happen. Case has a life, and sometimes things come up.
