(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)In the early seasons (I believe I've only ever seen the first 5 seasons dubbed), I loved and preferred the English dubbed version of Case Closed.
I also love and prefer the English dubs for Samurai Champloo.
I like both the original versions and the English dubs for Death Note and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
There's a nostalgic joy I get from the Sailor Moon dubs but I definitely prefer the original audio version.
I like to hear both the original versions and the English dubs for Studio Ghibli films. Most times I prefer the original versions but some dubs I really appreciate.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)Live action stuff however is still subs for me simply because I've tried watching Korean shows with dubs and it's... bad, like atrociously bad that I can't hack. Also when it comes to LA I tend to prefer subs because the mouth movements not matching the lips really bugs me, but that's a personal thing, if that doesn't bother someone and they watch dubbed LA I won't argue with them over it.

I love to hear the original actor's tones and pitches and emotions in their voice, and i love to hear the original languages, too.
Dubs always sound weird, and the off-track mouth movements are a huge 'no'.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 12:53 am (UTC)(link)I need dubs if I'm going to watch something while I do literally anything else-- I can't cross-stitch or paint while reading subtitles, let alone get real work done. I need subtitles even in English because the art of sound mixing ate itself.
Re: Inspired by #6
Live action or animated? Live action being dubbed is usually a lot more obvious and distracting. Though occasionally that can be a benefit...
Genre? Applies mostly to live action - stuff like most kaiju movies, b-level martial arts flicks, certain types of fantasy...the downsides of dubbing actually sort of add to the charm. If it's meant to be taken seriously, though...
Am I planning to pay full attention or do something else at the same time as consuming it? Obviously if I don't intend to pay full attention I want the one I can catch most of what's going on without looking at the screen. (Also tend to lean into genres that don't take much brainpower, thus fitting the above category.)
What are the original voices like? Mostly with animation, particularly anime. Give young characters ear-bleedingly shrill voices? That's a dub.
Conversely, what are the DUB voices like? Again, mostly animation, but if you give a serious character in a serious work a goofy voice like you'd find in a Loony Tunes cartoon, I'll stick to the original. (When this comes up in LA, it's mostly, you know, stuff where a 'bad' dub is actually a bonus.)
What is going on with my brain chemistry today? CAN I pay full attention to it, or am I a scatter brain who needs to have 3 things going at once, or am I maybe barely able to even handle one? Latter two cases, definitely dub, regardless of any of the above. (Or else watching something that was always in English. Probably that.)
Re: Inspired by #6
(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 04:57 am (UTC)(link)But whether I listen to the English dub if there is one or original language depends on which voices/voice acting I like better.
If I like both equally and enjoy the movie enough to own it, I sometimes watch both. I almost never listen to dubs in languages other than the original or English unless I'm trying to brush up on my crappy Spanish or French.
Re: Inspired by #6
(Anonymous) 2024-01-07 06:08 am (UTC)(link)1) Audio work is major shitty right now
2) I prefer original acting. I do not need to catch all cultural nuances to understand when actor is doing their job properly. Also learning cultural differences is fun. It's not difficult to understand what sempai or oppa is. I don't need translation dumbing it down for me.
3) You either get jarring mouth not syncing effect or translation trying to match movement and sucking. It's noticeable in my language since our words tend to be longer than English so translators just cut out half of the original text.
But I have exception with American cartoons. I am sorry but voice work especially in older cartoons is so fucking bad. I would rather listen to dub
