Dubs Vs Subs, which side are you on?

Re: Inspired by #6

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Dubs always. I have stuff to do that doesn't involve having to keep my eyes glued to a screen to catch what is going on. I have to multi task here.

Anytime I'm given a choice where I can choose subs, I'm going to choose subs

Dubs mostly. I use subs when I'm working on my Spanish.

Most times I prefer subs but I'm not adverse to dubs. If I like a certain thing a lot I'll give the subs a try on rewatches. There are a few times I prefer the dubs over the subs.

In the early seasons (I believe I've only ever seen the first 5 seasons dubbed), I loved and preferred the English dubbed version of Case Closed.

I also love and prefer the English dubs for Samurai Champloo.

I like both the original versions and the English dubs for Death Note and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

There's a nostalgic joy I get from the Sailor Moon dubs but I definitely prefer the original audio version.

I like to hear both the original versions and the English dubs for Studio Ghibli films. Most times I prefer the original versions but some dubs I really appreciate.

Subs 100%. For media in foreign languages, it’s more fun to me to hear how it originally sounded, and for things in English, I can’t understand it without captions anyway. Something something auditory processing.

Dubs. Unless you were raised in the original culture, you are not going to understand the nuances of the dialogue or performance anyway, you are always going to get it filtered through your own first language and native culture's prejudices and contextual understanding. You might as well have a good dub instead, it'll capture the intended tone of the show more.

Subs for me, always.

Dubs. I watch while crocheting. Can't read at the same time since I need to watch my hands.

Subs. I'm old school.

Re: Inspired by #6

Years ago I'd have said subs simply because the English voice acting was... not great. But as time has gone on and especially these days I can happily watch something subbed or dubbed, at least when it comes to anime, because the dubbing is actually really good most of the time, the VA's do a good job.

Live action stuff however is still subs for me simply because I've tried watching Korean shows with dubs and it's... bad, like atrociously bad that I can't hack. Also when it comes to LA I tend to prefer subs because the mouth movements not matching the lips really bugs me, but that's a personal thing, if that doesn't bother someone and they watch dubbed LA I won't argue with them over it.

Subs all the way.
I love to hear the original actor's tones and pitches and emotions in their voice, and i love to hear the original languages, too.

Dubs always sound weird, and the off-track mouth movements are a huge 'no'.

Re: Inspired by #6

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I need subs. I'm hard on hearing, so even if the show/movie is in a language I know, I still have trouble understanding if I can't read along the dialogue.

Re: Inspired by #6

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer dubs but will watch a sub if no dub is available, or if the dub is beyond unwatchable. My standards tend not to be very high so you have to really fuck up a dub to turn me off of it.

Re: Inspired by #6

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Subs. I have audio processing issues and also volume levels in many shows fluctuate to where soft spoken dialogue is often unintelligible to me.

Re: Inspired by #6

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Subs! I watch even the shows where I do understand the language with subs on.

Re: Inspired by #6

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
subs, I find reading easier than listening.

Re: Inspired by #6

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Subs all the way. a) I have an auditory processing disorder; b) I want to hear the emotion the original actors use for their characters; and c) if they're not speaking my language, they shouldn't be speaking my language. For example, 14th century Mongols did not speak english and that shit takes me right out (and yes, I do hate it when american media does that as well).

Depends on the show, but usually dubs.

Depends! Live action? Sub. Anything set in a real life setting, modern or historical? Sub, absolutely. Anything dependent on regional tropes? If the dub is good, it's the dub, but more likely it's sub. If it's a westernised fantasy or sci-fi, or otherwise completely alien setting, dubs. If it's an animated movie, I'll usually watch it once with each. If it's Yu Yu Hakusho, it's dub.

Find a Book.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey all. I'm wondering if anyone can recognize this book for me, I read it in the early-mid nineties, and it involved a post nuclear war Earth. There were a couple of different versions of humanity in it. One group was survivors of the war who'd adapted to life on the surface and their society had become sort of nomadic tribe who used Afghanhound--like dogs as part of their warfare. The other group was some cryogenically frozen people from just before the war who'd just woke up and were confused about what was going on. There was also a plot point about one of the latter using the tactics from the Battle of Cowpens to win a battle in the post apocalyptic era.

Does anyone know which book this might be? The cover definitely had artwork of an Afghanhound on it.
