The Good and the Bad

(Anonymous) 2024-02-04 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
How's it going?

The Bad: I am in so much pain. I am going through the super fun process of finding out what foods cause me severe pain and I thought I had it down for the most part but today a "safe" food has turned on me.

The Good: I had an unexpected day off today so I didn't have to struggle through work with this pain!

The bad: vague nausea from poor diet choices + game motion sickness, also Sunday Scaries and being bombarded with work shit because (long story but let's just say someone's two-part bad decision left us all with a bunch of overwhelming work) the orders may pour in for a while and we don't know for how long.

The good: um. Got some chores done I guess.

Bad: It was raining all weekend and my calf is starting to get tight again.

Good: Got my wall planters hung, we actually identified some ghosts on Phasmaphobia, and I got all the parts of my crochet bear done (not to assemble).

The good: my kitty

I'm going through something similar. I even developed disordered eating for awhile because I just didn't know what to was safe to eat anymore.

Saw Poor Things in a packed theatre. Lady two seats over said it was two upsetting for her and left after about thirty minutes.

It was good and funny, but upsetting at times. I had braced for the sex and violence, so I stomached it well, but was disturbed by things only mentioned ln dialogue.

Excellent. I just decided to check if this place existed after having not posted for about five years, and my heart is warmed to know it's still going.

Fan Theories #2

[personal profile] ariakas 2024-02-04 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Continuing on from yesterday in case there are any more that people would like to share. One of mine, in honor of secret #1:

Gotham isn't "cursed", despite his supposed philanthropy Batman is creating legions of unhinged supervillains by only using non-lethal violence: punching and kicking and throwing people so hard it knocks them out cold. He does this to them constantly, over and over again. This leaves them with CTE, leading to increased antisocial behaviour and decreased impulse control.

Re: Fan Theories #2

(Anonymous) 2024-02-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, almost half of men in real world jail (and about a quarter of women) do have a traumatic brain injury of some kind, so Batman personally probably isn't making that much of a difference. (It could be a lot higher - as high as 80% - but 47% is where the meta studies even out.)

There's also the theory that after Bruce's parents were murdered, he suffered a mental breakdown and was locked up in Arkham Asylum. Each of his villains represents either one of the employees at Arkham or an aspect of his fractured psyche.

Or the one that Bruce is basically Truman in the Truman Show.

What period of fandom do you miss?

Re: Based on 7

(Anonymous) 2024-02-04 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't there for it obviously, but I'm so fascinated by old-school science fiction fandom (like, pre-1980s).

I guess the late 90s through the late 00s, where you could actually have lengthy discussions with folks over a message board.

90s-early aughts. The focus of fandom seems to have shifted more onto the finished fanfic/art ("content") rather than being in the fandom. Too many people are forgetting that the point is to be around people who also are obsessed with This Media. When the focus is on people-as-content-creators you lose that human connection, and people start demanding "content" to their own taste instead of actually participating in the fandom.

Pre-TWS Steve/Bucky fandom. I got into it in late 2013 and right about the time I would have become more active, CATWS came out and within a month it was like a completely different, much less pleasant (at least for me) fandom.

Those first couple of weeks of Pacific Rim fandom before the Social Justice Bullies found it.

Well, for pretty obvious reasons, early 2000's of fandom, which, for me, was when I actually found and got involved in fandom. First Harry Potter, then Buffy, and then Supernatural hit like a tidal wave and was happily swept away.

Met some of the most awesome people (one of which became my bff4evah), wrote a ton, read even more, had so many interesting, lively, outrageous conversations with so many fun, smart people....

It was just damn fun.

I miss fandom and pairing dedicated fic archives. I’m eternally grateful to the people who keep any going these days!
I miss webrings, too. And mailing lists. And forums. Basically everything 1995-2004 fandom.

I was watching some YT videos on LOTR, so of course, I expected the site to start recommending more videos.

I saw one with the title "What exactly did Grima do to Theoden?" and immediately bust up laughing.
