Wait, are there people posting fanfics on Pinterest?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
also I agree OP!

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, is this saying fans under 25 don't post to ao3? (I'm not surprised by tumblr or pinterest, those seem very old crowd to me already.)

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
my understanding is that for the younger side of gen z/oldest of gen alpha, wattpad is the go-to fic site

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the one-stop-shop fic site that it is for us, at least.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It has been my experience that AO3 seems to exclusively attract the very young crowd. Older fans still use ff.net as the senior archive. The genuinely old fans still have their own websites with a bit of defunct webring code on it though.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
With regards to ff.net and ao3, that has been my exact opposite experience! Interesting.

lemon and talking scenes are like 40+. I'm saying this as an 35 yo fic reader.

As a 41 yo, lemon/lime is from my literal teens, i.e. the '90s. A 25 year old wouldn't have been born yet lmao.

This is how all history flattens, isn't it. We're seeing it right now.

Agreed! I'm 42 and that stuff was seen as "old" (or at least starting to) when I found fandom in my late teens/early 20s.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That has to depend on the fandom, surely - I'm 34 and remember lemons, limes, talking scenes, mini plays with the characters at the end objecting to what happened in the chapter when I was 12-15.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-04 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Came here to say this. I’m quite a bit older than 25 and these things were barely still around when I was online as a teen.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
NGL, as someone who has been into fandom since 2004 and only started writing fanfics for Youtube fandoms in 2020 after turning 29 - almost everything on there applies to me T_T
Definitely guilty of the The Yaoi teenage fangirl to very queer adult pipeline.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't miss them tbh, wasn't a fan of that shit when it was the thing to do and I do not want it to come back.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for that very important interjection to the thread. Exit is to your left.

As a 25+ fan, I chuckled at the parts of myself I saw here.

As a 25+ fan, I am also looking ahead 2-6 years from now when Gen Alpha becomes the young generation in fandom spaces and Gen Z realizes they have now been bumped to the "fandom olds" because they are now also 25+.

We absolutely should not.

i always hated them because more often than not they revealed how much worse an author understood the voice of a character than the fic suggested.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Super side-eyeing the part about queer people, because I've never met anyone in fandom who was just fetishistic without turning out to be queer. Being "fetishistic" in fandom is a gateway to figuring out your identity, and if we're increasingly shamed for it, fewer people now will figure themselves out.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-04 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
The discourse about "fetishizing" has always been wonky, because it's very hard to describe what makes it different from attraction. So, you get situations where people say they don't want to be fetishized, but also say that it's a sign of bigotry if people aren't sexually attracted to them, or if they aren't being portrayed as sexually desirable in creative works. It gets to a fundamental ambivalence that we all have toward our own sexuality: we want to be desired, but we're also uncomfortable with being desired, for any number of reasons. I think the conversation would be much better if more people were able to recognize and confront that contradiction.

On another note, I've never been entirely sure what to make of the argument that girls and women who write slash are homophobic, and so should be opposed. I had one very bizarre back and forth some years ago where the other person was arguing, in all earnestness, that these writers are worse than people who actively fight to curtail gay rights.

I'm over 25 and I am not a fan of anything on that list

(Anonymous) 2024-03-04 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Omg, memory unlocked --- I forgot all about those post story notes, where the author and the characters are chatting and *actions go in asterisks* oh what a time lmao. when I started reading fic at 13, I thought it was funny, as I got older, please spare me lmao.

I feel slightly called out here, but some of those tropes I feel are also for the younger set (I was active 2006-2017).

Be the change you want to see in the world, nonny!

... I think this kinda thing is still banned on FFN, but bring it back on AO3 at least! And other sites that exist but I never went there!

Heck, I might bring it back myself... or maybe not. Uncertain.
