I don't feel the least bit sorry for them, and frankly, I think he's humouring them more than he should by answering at all.

Fandom's parasocial "validate me senpai" BS is beyond out of control at this point, and I wish more creators would adopt the old-school practise of politely pretending those rabid elements don't exist, rather than encouraging them by replying to their obnoxious asks, passive-aggressively or otherwise.

There was one recently that sent me over the edge. Someone asked (paraphrase) “have you ever considered using non-binary characters in your works?”

I can’t tell if they were trolling, exceptionally dense, or had maybe seen only one thing he’s done and thought they were being oh so profound by quizzing him about doing more inclusion.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-17 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I am unaware of most of his work, does he write many non binary characters?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-17 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Several characters in Good Omens are nonbinary, including Crowley and Aziraphale. But some people think they don't count because they present as male (usually) and use "he" and don't spend a few seconds every episode talking about how genderless they are.

Desire from Sandman is one major example as well.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
He's gone on record about most if not all his angels and demons being non-binary, but a LOT of people only accept non-binary if it looks a certain way.

Gaiman does have some amazingly dense fans. I once saw a person ask him to write their plot idea into a novel and in exchange they'd split the profit with him 60/40!

(Anonymous) 2024-03-17 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I get the amusement factor, but I just think he likes the attention.

MTE.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't everyone?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
No. I for one would not.

On that level? Not too many would, I imagine. Fans can be super annoying, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-17 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ngl, one of the things I miss about old fandom pre-tumblr was the fact that none of the fandom circles I was in were that adamant to make a ship canon or felt the need to have approval from the people making the official canon.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
did this trend arise during the Tumblr era? I'm kind of old fandom (like forums, dedicated archive sites, quizzilla lol and FFnet), so I never really saw this. Is it across fandoms too? All I saw (and would write) were the disclaimers about how I owned nothing except my OCs lol

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say it actually arose in the Twitter era, overlapped slightly with Tumblr, and then started migrating over there in droves once Twitter became a steaming pile of Musky garbage.

+1. I don't get why people care so much about creators validating their ships. Who gives a damn?

I have non-canon ships and while it would be funny to have a creator say one of them was meant to be canon just so the annoying shippers of the rival ship would shut up since THEY are so vocal about how THEIR ship is allegedly more likely to be canon, it really makes no difference whatsoever. I like my thing. It makes sense to me, it inspires me and allows me a little bit of fun in this dreary world so why would I let it go just because canon doesn't acknowledge it?

Idk, it just seems so entitled and childish on the part of these fans. Like they get to point at us and go "nu-uh, my ship is canoner than urs", lmao. Like, even if it is... So what?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-17 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I just wish people wouldn't @ him when someone has a fan theory or posts meta. It's so awkward. Not his fault - for an old guy on the internets he does alright. Still. Awkward.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-17 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I just don't think he should answer the really dumb stuff.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the really dumb stuff is the kind of thing that he's probably been asked 5000 times by different people, so I get answering those. I agree that he should probably just pass on the hyper-specific dumb stuff like the one in the secret. Although some of the people who are sending the hyper-specific ones are probably going to just keep sending the same question until he answers it.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think he probably actually doesn't answer the dumbest questions he's getting. u_u

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I always wonder how many questions he gets that boil down to 'let me tell you about my super special OC who you should put in your next book!'. You know it's gotta be less than zero.

LOL

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I get how this is cringe, but the theory posted seems...almost plausible?

Re: LOL

(Anonymous) 2024-03-18 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
I haven’t seen Master & Commander, but according to Wikipedia the movie came out in 2003 and the first of the books it was based on in 1999. Good Omens the book came out in 1990, and much of the dialogue and all of the narration in the first season of the TV show is taken verbatim from the book.

Granted the reference to lunch during the reign of terror was fleshed out some in the TV show, but the snake eyes were always a part of the story.

Except the person who asked didn't even do the tiniest bit of research to see that Good Omens predates Master&Commander by 13 years lol
