I hear ya!

I randomly showed up to a comics and collectables store in my prom dress one fun evening. The cashier and I had a lark.

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome. If I went to comic book stores I would totally do that. Instead I'm lame and don't have the patience to start at the very beginning with comics so I read about my favorite characters on wiki and on their comic's wiki.

a girl? Reading comics? Clearly this has never happened before ever.

i'm sorry but that's just the kind of impression I'm getting.

I've started doing this somewhat when going to conventions and shopping video games, too. I don't want people to think that only "tomboyish" girls can have geeky interests! I'm a girly girl and, finally, I'm proud of it.

GO YOU.

[identity profile] jedishampoo.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly what you should do... find a comic store with cute guys working there and show up like that. Heh!

Hell, I used to wear makeup and dress cute to work at the comic store. My boss loved it. He was a perv... he hired all girls and it was bonus if we actually read comics. H'd send me to comic shows if I promised to wear a miniskirt. 'Course, this was early 90s, and now there are a lot more chicks in the "fanboy's world."

As a girl who also reads comics, this is exactly the kind of attitude that bugs me. It seems like you're trying to play up this attitude of "That's right, I'm a girl who reads comics! Isn't that amazing? Me, a girl, reading comics!"

Why can't you just be yourself and read comics? Why do you have to be a girl comic reader, instead of a comic reader who happens to also be a girl?

*shrugs* Whatever rocks your boat. Me, if I was to go into a comic book store (unlikely, I like ordering from the internet) I'd just wear... whatever the heck I'd normally wear. I don't give a damn what other random people think of me. XD Same if I went to a con or whatever. I just want to be me, not any stereotype or attempting to avoid a stereotype or whatever.

[identity profile] bonsoirdollface.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I do this too, OP!

[identity profile] mimes.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I get a kick out of dressing nicely to go to the comic book store too. I just like giving stereotypes a kick in the balls, or something.

[identity profile] dwh.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear you. I don't go out of my way to dress up to go to the comics shop (Mostly due to my own laziness), but I have to admit that spending four years in a computer science lab did more to drive me towards girliness than I otherwise would have. Mind you, I don't regret it at all. It's really nice to remember every now and then that you're not just "one of the guys."

[identity profile] lylilyl.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a... Lovely thing to do, IMHO.
I normally just try to look presentable haha~

[identity profile] dragonfruits.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, get over yourself. Being a "girly girl" who reads comics isn't uncommon. You are not a special snowflake.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I love being The Girl when I go to my local comic book shop. The best day ever in there was when I went and there were two other girls. The cashier ran into the back to get his boss, yelling, "Frank! Frank! You gotta see this! There are three girls in here!" Classic.

I normally dress girly, like, all the time, but I can relate to this secret. I'm gonna get really, tl;dr here, sorry: In my own former gaming group I was seen as just "one of the guys" despite the dresses, and it actually really bothered me. It's not that I wanted (or want now) to be treated differently because I happen to have boobs and a vag, but it was like they purposely ignored and disliked any feminine things I liked/traits I had, even when it's an apparent part of my personality that ISN'T GONNA GO AWAY. They liked the gaming and what-not, but some of them didn't like the fact I love other girly things I do and I felt like I had to either one thing or the other. It sucked.

It's like. I'm a girl. And I game, read comics, play first person shooters and Warhammer 40k, and I want to be accepted among others who do this, but I feel like I need to come with a warning that if you accept me for being a geek, that's great, but you need to accept me for the other things that are important to me, too, even if it is fashion and celeb gossip and sewing and baking--you don't have to like it, but at least respect it.

Maybe I just had a shitty group of gaming friends, though. =/

This secret makes me angry and I don't even know why. Rock on with your dress choice or whatever Anon, but can somebody help me out here? Is it because I'm tired of people who think they can look at somebody's clothes and figure out their personality? Maybe it's because I don't think being "girly" has anything to do with comics? Is it because it seems like guys never ever worry about this kind of thing?

Well... you can still be a girl without dressing that way. I get what you're saying and I sympathize, but I kind of resent the idea that pink and glittery = womanly. That's just as much a stereotype as the whole 'girls don't read comics' thing.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
People who flaunt or try really hard to subscribe to their default gender roles kind of really annoy me. EVERYONE CAN SEE THAT YOU'RE FEMALE YOU REALLY DON'T HAVE TO WORK HARD AT EXPRESSING IT GEEZ

Another TL;DR comment

[identity profile] madsqueeble.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
A few months ago, one of the nutjob political parties here went around frothing at the mouth over "tomboys" and how they would destroy society. They meant butches/dykes; I wasn't pleased for many reasons, one of which being I'm a little tomboyish myself.

Now every time I go downtown to pick up manga, I do it in as much frill and froth and girly as I can muster from my wardrobe...and pass to the cashier volumes of FMA, Ultraman Story 0 and Big 100 Secret! Man Boy Hero Bigmuscle Super Blowing Up Stuff Battles*.

I know it doesn't really do anything. I know as long as I'm not Malay and male, PAS wouldn't give me the time of day. It does, however, feel hella awesome.

(ETA because the snark ate my HTML skills)

[identity profile] lumati.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
....

That's adorable.

I tend to go for geeky clothes so I can pretend I belong in places like that.

Oops?

Fuck you.
I love the idea of being a girly girl and going to a comic shop - more power to you. But the fact that you go out of your way to project this image is just stupid.

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Contrary to portrayals in the popular media (such as on "Big Bang Theory" or "The Simpsons"), I doubt people will find you as shocking or novel as you think. They may not even be paying as much attention as you want them to, either.
