I feel like the Dewey decimal system actually works against me. When I look for sci-fi books at the library, I can be surprised by whatever subgenre I happen to stumble across. Nonfiction categories are so fine-grained that I’m not sure where to start.

What subjects interest you? /works at a library

My first thought is political history. I really liked The Cartoon History of the Universe. Ecology also seems interesting, but I haven’t read much about it besides what’s in Scientific American. I guess I like interlocked systems of living things.

Oh, and I’m interested in books on how to write books.

Considering how vast and varied non-fiction books are by comparison to the genres of fantasy & sci-fi - I would argue that it already does with books like biographies of celebrities and politicians.

Reality will never win out over fantasy when it comes to peoples fantasy escapism fanishness. Plus there is the whole RPF thing.

I think RPF is much less likely in the nonfiction books I tend to prefer (think Because Internet). And then there are some books where reality is wilder than RPF could ever be. Bad Blood comes to mind.

Any particular kind of nonfiction book in mind, OP?

Or just in general?

I feel like people get super obsessed in a fandom kind of way with books about cults, hollywood drama biographies, amd murders - especially unsolved murders.

In what type of way? I like both types of books (prefer nonfiction these days, but will always love scifi) and I think of them as hyped up by different groups and in different contexts usually, even when people enjoy both? I do see a lot of hype for nonfiction books when I'm in a community related to that subject, like history books have plenty of fans.

Non-fiction is such a wide field...What books are you talking about?
I don't about other countries, we hype a lot of non-fiction.

It's kind of hard to write fanfiction about Salt: A world history. Not impossible, but hard.

There are some fandom adjacent podcasts, like If Books Could Kill, or any good history/educational podcast that tells you their sources.

I think nonfiction is usually not so friendly to transformative fandom, which might be why it feels like it gets less attention if that's your social circle. (Though when it does hit it has surprising reach. 'Expert Judgement on Markers to Deter Inadvertent Human Intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant' memes pop up all the time now. And I'd argue that one Hamilton biography is responsible for quite a lot.)

That doesn't mean nonfiction (especially biography) isn't huge. Becoming made ungodly amounts of money. I'm sure Spare did too. It's just not talked about as much in fandom circles because the people interested in writing RPF about the Obamas x the British monarchy are not so loud.

Outside fandom, you're probably likelier to find something to chat about on the nonfiction side.

As someone who isn't into memoirs, I actually have avoided these books. I prefer books that investigate psychology or linguistics. I also like books that debunk science and health myths.

Nonfiction is actually very popular and is an extremely broad genre. I think SFF just gets the attention op speaks of in fannish/nerd spaces because its always trying to prove itself online

@ OP or anyone else, really, what are some of your favorite non-fiction books? I love non-fiction, especially of the "deep dive into a specific theme" kind.
