Yes, had you kept drawing your skills probably would be better (especially if you were actively looking to improve them). That's part of learning is constantly practicing.

However don't feel bad for ditching Sailor Moon. Not to be mean but that style is not a great style to want to emulate drawing with. DBZ is a better style and even then a lot of people hate it because it's... DBZ.

Go back to drawing and draw something you love, be it SM fan art or something else. SM and DBZ were my original inspirations and I don't draw them much anymore, if at all.

lol dbz better art style

I don't reall care for either but knocking shoujo and then praising dbz of all things? Really?

Re: 129

[identity profile] dbzmerciter2005.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
In my opinion DBZ is a better style, granted not by that much. I'm also biased, DBZ was and still is a big influence on my work.

However a much, much better style is the Final Fantasy style, and that's what I'm teasing through now. It's much more realistic and beautiful than SM and DBZ could ever be.

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2009-08-11 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
or maybe they could actually have their own art style?

Re: 129

[identity profile] dbzmerciter2005.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
To develop your own style you must emulate others, or so I was taught.

I do try to have my own style, I just like to play around with others and see what I can learn.

Re: 129

[identity profile] lovegonnadrown.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
...what? have you ever even taken an art class?

all you learn from copying is, well... copying. the good artists learn from life, then develop a style that they're comfortable with.

Re: 129

[identity profile] dbzmerciter2005.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is everyone assuming that I'm just plain old copying? -.- Sorry, it's just starting to irritate me.

Yes, I took one class in college, and it was the best thing I could have done for myself. During that semester my skills got so much better even I couldn't believe it (they suck compared to what I do now, which isn't great but... bleh, it's my hobby).

I study real life now, or try to, with dabblings of drawing fanart on the side. I have a few books that have pictures of real people and I draw from those. My personal favorite is Anatomy for the Artist since it shows what the body looks like below the skin.

Re: 129

[identity profile] lovegonnadrown.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
because that is kind of exactly what you are saying.

"style to want to emulate drawing with" "that's what I'm teasing through now" "you must emulate others"

it's okay to draw inspiration from others but all of your comments seem to be "just copy everything they do! :D"

really not good advice for a beginner artist.

Re: 129

[identity profile] dbzmerciter2005.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well if that's what I'm saying, then I apologize, that's not what I've been meaning to say. (Today's been a bad day for me and words, I apologize.) Sadly that's how I learned to draw, lots of copying then a swift kick in the ass by my art teacher who got me to draw from real life.

You gotta draw the real stuff before you can develop style. Yeah you can copy others all you want, but you won't learn anything. If you already know how to draw realistically, great, then you can mimic other styles (often via fanart) to see what fits your style. Otherwise it's a waste of time.

[identity profile] wicked-seraph.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think [livejournal.com profile] dbzmerciter2005 quite meant it as "copy someone's style and only use that." I take it more to mean that you look into different styles and see what you like and don't like, to expand your own personal. The only sort of comparison I can think of is someone just learning how to cook. In order to improve and develop their own signature dishes, it'd be best for them to test out several different kinds of recipes and ways of cooking to see what works best for them :]

Re: 129

[identity profile] dbzmerciter2005.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. That's what I was going for. :) Though it is important to draw from the realistic, it's good to mimic other styles to find what you do and don't like about it and make it your own.

Re: 129

(Anonymous) 2009-08-11 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
But the best style of all is the "Draw what you like best and develop your own based on your own tastes" style, rivaled only by the "Learn to draw real life THEN stylize it into animu" style.

Your comments are really impressively dumb.

Re: 129

[identity profile] dbzmerciter2005.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You assume I didn't know any of that, go you.

Yes, develop your own style, but to do that you must branch out. Don't stick with SM, DBZ, Marvel Comics, or whatever you like, you gotta try to be realistic and try other things.

DBZ (I'll just say Toriyama's style in general) is a unique style, but that doesn't make it better than other drawing styles. Also, which style are you referring to, considering how many character designers and animation directors worked on Sailor Moon? (Even as a kid I noticed the differences between the art from episode to episode.)

Well put. I just thought it was better because it looked nicer in my eyes. /shrugs That's a personal preference, what you said is clearly better.

Which? Well everything in general, though specifically the manga, anything that isn't drawn in the style of the posters (http://media.photobucket.com/image/sailor%20moon/dr3am3rgirl/sailor_moon.jpg), and anything that doesn't draw Ami/Mercury's hair like this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/36/Sailor_Merkur_01.jpg/220px-Sailor_Merkur_01.jpg). I know that some episodes had pretty decent animation while others didn't, but it's been a while so I can't remember which ones were which. :(

Ah,
here's an example of what I deem "bad Sailor Moon" anime style. I cannot stand Mercury's hair like that.

Re: 129

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-08-11 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hrm, I kind of like it both ways.

There did seem to be one primary animation director/key animator that they used for the most important episodes, and I like them the best (the person who did the final episode of the first series).

I know who you're referring to, at least if my memory serves me, and their artwork was pretty decent. If they were involved with the movies at all then for sure I know who you're talking about.

LOL DBZ BETTER THAN SAILOR MOON
sorry, no, most anime is pretty fail..especially those two

Re: 129

[identity profile] sxiz.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
most things in general are pretty fail.

like music. nobody can agree on which music is best but most agree most of it sucks.

Re: 129

[identity profile] miss-mercurial.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Why do people hate DBZ, anyhoo? I just started watching it, and I think it's funny and well-written and cool. I don't get the hate. Is it because so many people saw it in the American version first, or what? I'm not trying to be snarky, I really do want someone to explain the hate to me, 'cause I genuinely don't understand it.

Re: 129

[identity profile] dbzmerciter2005.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I never got it either. =/ I mean now that I'm older I can see the cliche-ish story line, the dragging along anime, and the strange looking characters, but I still love it.

According to my friend it's "an abomination of art" and as such a lot of western/American artists hate it. =/

Re: 129

[identity profile] wottie.livejournal.com 2009-08-12 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to be mean but that style is not a great style to want to emulate drawing with

Are we talking about the manga, the artbooks, or the anime? Because I would readily argue that SM and in fact most anime are bad art styles to be imitating (learn to draw with real proportions plz) but as far as that sort of style goes, the artbooks are beautiful.
