Do you comment on fics?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
How? I love reading fics. I bookmark and kudos them. But I have no clue how to comment on them. I don't have any deep thoughts to share. And writing "Good fic. Good grammar." seems silly as hell.

Sometimes it's actual words like "omg I loooove this", sometimes just "!!!!!!". I'm actually following a WIP and started with !!! and my comments have morphed into having actual conversations with the author.

I've commented on every fic that was given to me either for a fest or on Tumblr or whatever. Otherwise, only occasionally for fics I've thought were really amazing and/or had specific comments to make.

I comment on fics as much as I'm able! I try to zero in on a few things I especially like and mention them. I rarely get fancy; just a, "I really loved the way you ______."

I almost never comment on fics. If I do, it tends to be older fics that I’ve read many, many times. I’ll just comment telling them that I’ve loved their work for a long time and am happy it’s still posted.

I do sometimes. Usually on fics for my OTP that I think are really good, especially ones that don't have a ton of comments, because I really want to encourage those writers to write more.

When writing comments I give general praise (this was so good, I loved reading this) but then also pick out something more specific - something I liked about what they were going for creatively, what kind of mood they were going for, how they wrote a specific character. "I love getting to see Character X do Y! That's a great part of the character we don't see enough and you do a really good job with it" or "I feel like you do such a good job of getting into character Y's loneliness here, it's really well done!" Stuff like that. Or even one particular scene or moment you loved. And then maybe a "thanks for writing".

Yeah! I've got some rarepairs and when I see fics go up for those it really matters to comment, because I want the writer to feel encouraged, and with those smaller ships, they might not be getting a lot of comments... Some people write really great fics without getting the engagement they deserve.

Same here. I mostly write comments in the hopes that the authors write more, so it tends to be on fics I really love or fics that are good but have no comments, possibly because they're about a rarepair or niche character.

If I really like a fic I leave a comment expressing that I found it fun/enjoyable/creative or something else pertinent to the fic in question. When I love a fic I'll actually quote a line or a dialogue choice that I felt really worked and leave a much more lengthy reply about my favorite parts and character moments.

I don't do the latter as often because it's not common that a fic inspires me to say more than a little thank you to the writer for making it. I'm also so much worse at replying to comments on my own fic than writing comments on others, idk why but my responses are so basic in comparison to the praise I'll give out lmao.

Literally just "This was fun, thank you for sharing!"

Sometimes if I've reread a fic a lot I'll drop a comment along the lines of "I am rereading this fic for the umpteenth time and it is just as good and satisfying as the first. Thank you!"

But no, I don't comment on every fic I read. I comment more than I used to, but still not every fic.

I try to comment on every fic I finish. As an ex-writer, I know how much a comment can mean. So I generally say the first thing that pops into my head, because that's the salient point I've taken away from the fic. Also it removes a lot of the pencil-chewing from composing the comment. It may not end up being deep or meaningful, but it's *there*, and it picks up on the most important point in the fic for me. A thank-you to the author for sharing the fic, and bam, done.

I usually write, “I loved this! Thanks for sharing it”, on fics I like. If I really liked it, I comment on the bits I liked and how they made me feel. I once commented that the fic was so good that I stayed up all night reading it and the author loved my comment.

I try to leave a comment on every chapter I read. Authors appreciate it and sometimes I can have conversations with the author or other readers.

I'm not always in a mood to comment, and when I'm not I'll say "<3" or "That was nice, thank you for sharing!" or even just "Thank you" or "wow".

When I'm a little more up to it I'll post whatever thought I have at the end of the chapter "Nooo Character don't do it!" or "Ahaha, get his ass" along side the above.

Idk anon, once you get in the grove it's easy.

I try to-- sometimes I don't have it in me, and I might not always remember to go back and comment later, though sometimes I go back once I have my thoughts in order. (and of course if I don't like a fic I just don't comment, but I really like to say something when I like a fic)

My thoughts aren't always VERY in order, there's a lot of just "alskdjakl I love this!" or "thank you for writing/sharing!"-- it's totally okay if you don't have any deep thoughts but you want to let the writer know how much you liked something. If I can think of a favorite line or part, I'll say "my favorite part was (x)!" because when I'm a writer, I love to know what people's favorite parts were, and if I liked the whole thing too much to choose I might say I couldn't pick one favorite bit.

ONCE recently I wrote someone a whole ass ESSAY about why I loved their fic for one of my rarepairs and we're new friends now, so like... it's really rewarding when you can use the comments to connect to someone who sees things the way you do! But it never has to be that deep-- as a writer, I love just knowing someone cared enough to string a few words together about it. Maybe it's a keysmash, or an "I wish I could leave kudos again" on a second or third chapter. Or an "I'm re-reading this fic", which lets someone know you liked it enough to come back and read all over again. It doesn't have to be a long thing that leads to a back-and-forth conversation to be super meaningful to the person who gets it.

fic author here...I love your likes and kudos and bookmarks if you can't find words. I do. I love them. I love every extra hit count because you just wanna read it again.

It's hard for authors to know how to respond to in-depth comments because they almost demand a response, but there are also fans who accuse you of comment-padding when you respond. Whatever. If you can manage to string enough words demanding a response, wow, cool, great, but if you can't, it's still very awesome that you liked my fic at all even in what looks like the smallest way. Both authors and readers are caught in a "damned if you do, dammned if you don't" loop regardless of what you do, so do you and be happy that it's enough.

yes

Re: Do you comment on fics?

I do. Not for every fic I read or enjoy...I just leave a comment when I like the fic and it makes me want to let the author know.

If it's an ongoing fic I usually give a comment along the lines of "I can't wait to read more".

If it's a completed fic I usually write what I liked about the fic or I give a simple thanks/gush (comments can be really long or short and simple, depends).

I really don't know how to encourage others to comment on fics outside of knowing that as a writer I would like to get comments complimenting what the reader liked about my fic and/or just a nice comment to let me know they read and liked my fic. So I tend to leave comments I would like to receive.

Re: Do you comment on fics?

I only comment when I feel like I have something to say about it that I want the author to know about. If there's lots of good bits as I'm reading where the story's making interesting things happen in my head or that I really don't want to forget to mention, I'll get out a text document and make little notes for myself - it can be just copying a line I thought was amazing to remember to praise it or whatever, and then I can refer back to that when the story finishes. Which can really help if I get to the end with a sort of stunned feeling, like "that was amazing but where do I begin to tell them how great it was?"

I guess it kind of depends on the author whether they'd appreciate commentary like "good grammar," and you're right, "good fic" isn't really saying much about why you liked it. (Some will like literally anything, though.) But ... saying "I liked it because [these things you did] really reached me" gives the writer more to be happy about. And it doesn't have to be positive in the vein of "your story made me happy" - something like "oh, man, I was beside myself and reading through my fingers when it looked like [character] was in danger" tells the writer that you cared a lot about what was going to happen. That kind of intense attention and your readers having feelings over it is a big deal to a lot of writers, too. Often, you can also look at existing comments to get a sense of what a particular person appreciates where feedback is concerned. If that's part of what's holding you back.

And commenting can be a lot of fun. How many times have you read something that isn't on the AO3 and felt like you wished you could tell someone what that story made you feel, but there's no one to tell? It makes reading and writing a much more you-can-socialize-around-this activity than it is when books just go out into the world. Even with niches that get very few readers.

Yup. I say something like 'I love a good fix-it fic!' Or 'Really interesting take on the issue/character/problem' or 'HOLY FUCKING HELL THAT WAS FUCKING AMAZING JESUS CHRIST MOOOOOOOOOOOAR'

Or, you know, just whatever. :D
