Do you comment on fics?

(Anonymous) 2024-05-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)When writing comments I give general praise (this was so good, I loved reading this) but then also pick out something more specific - something I liked about what they were going for creatively, what kind of mood they were going for, how they wrote a specific character. "I love getting to see Character X do Y! That's a great part of the character we don't see enough and you do a really good job with it" or "I feel like you do such a good job of getting into character Y's loneliness here, it's really well done!" Stuff like that. Or even one particular scene or moment you loved. And then maybe a "thanks for writing".

(Anonymous) 2024-05-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)I don't do the latter as often because it's not common that a fic inspires me to say more than a little thank you to the writer for making it. I'm also so much worse at replying to comments on my own fic than writing comments on others, idk why but my responses are so basic in comparison to the praise I'll give out lmao.
Re: Do you comment on fics?
(Anonymous) 2024-05-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)Sometimes if I've reread a fic a lot I'll drop a comment along the lines of "I am rereading this fic for the umpteenth time and it is just as good and satisfying as the first. Thank you!"
But no, I don't comment on every fic I read. I comment more than I used to, but still not every fic.

(Anonymous) 2024-05-17 01:33 am (UTC)(link)I'm not always in a mood to comment, and when I'm not I'll say "<3" or "That was nice, thank you for sharing!" or even just "Thank you" or "wow".
When I'm a little more up to it I'll post whatever thought I have at the end of the chapter "Nooo Character don't do it!" or "Ahaha, get his ass" along side the above.
Idk anon, once you get in the grove it's easy.
Re: Do you comment on fics?
(Anonymous) 2024-05-17 01:42 am (UTC)(link)My thoughts aren't always VERY in order, there's a lot of just "alskdjakl I love this!" or "thank you for writing/sharing!"-- it's totally okay if you don't have any deep thoughts but you want to let the writer know how much you liked something. If I can think of a favorite line or part, I'll say "my favorite part was (x)!" because when I'm a writer, I love to know what people's favorite parts were, and if I liked the whole thing too much to choose I might say I couldn't pick one favorite bit.
ONCE recently I wrote someone a whole ass ESSAY about why I loved their fic for one of my rarepairs and we're new friends now, so like... it's really rewarding when you can use the comments to connect to someone who sees things the way you do! But it never has to be that deep-- as a writer, I love just knowing someone cared enough to string a few words together about it. Maybe it's a keysmash, or an "I wish I could leave kudos again" on a second or third chapter. Or an "I'm re-reading this fic", which lets someone know you liked it enough to come back and read all over again. It doesn't have to be a long thing that leads to a back-and-forth conversation to be super meaningful to the person who gets it.
Re: Do you comment on fics?
(Anonymous) 2024-05-17 03:29 am (UTC)(link)It's hard for authors to know how to respond to in-depth comments because they almost demand a response, but there are also fans who accuse you of comment-padding when you respond. Whatever. If you can manage to string enough words demanding a response, wow, cool, great, but if you can't, it's still very awesome that you liked my fic at all even in what looks like the smallest way. Both authors and readers are caught in a "damned if you do, dammned if you don't" loop regardless of what you do, so do you and be happy that it's enough.

Re: Do you comment on fics?
(Anonymous) 2024-05-17 04:40 am (UTC)(link)If it's an ongoing fic I usually give a comment along the lines of "I can't wait to read more".
If it's a completed fic I usually write what I liked about the fic or I give a simple thanks/gush (comments can be really long or short and simple, depends).
I really don't know how to encourage others to comment on fics outside of knowing that as a writer I would like to get comments complimenting what the reader liked about my fic and/or just a nice comment to let me know they read and liked my fic. So I tend to leave comments I would like to receive.
Re: Do you comment on fics?
(Anonymous) 2024-05-17 05:06 am (UTC)(link)I guess it kind of depends on the author whether they'd appreciate commentary like "good grammar," and you're right, "good fic" isn't really saying much about why you liked it. (Some will like literally anything, though.) But ... saying "I liked it because [these things you did] really reached me" gives the writer more to be happy about. And it doesn't have to be positive in the vein of "your story made me happy" - something like "oh, man, I was beside myself and reading through my fingers when it looked like [character] was in danger" tells the writer that you cared a lot about what was going to happen. That kind of intense attention and your readers having feelings over it is a big deal to a lot of writers, too. Often, you can also look at existing comments to get a sense of what a particular person appreciates where feedback is concerned. If that's part of what's holding you back.
And commenting can be a lot of fun. How many times have you read something that isn't on the AO3 and felt like you wished you could tell someone what that story made you feel, but there's no one to tell? It makes reading and writing a much more you-can-socialize-around-this activity than it is when books just go out into the world. Even with niches that get very few readers.

Or, you know, just whatever. :D
