If it helps, I was no younger than 22 when I figured out the expression was "can't make ends meet" rather than "can't make end's meat." I thought "end's meat" was a very cheap, low-grade variety of meat. So if you couldn't even afford that you must be very poor.

I also thought "keyless entry," as available on cars, was "key le century," some feature I couldn't comprehend because I am not a car buff.

At somepoint a few years ago, I was rereading Return of the King & it suddenly hit me at some Aragorn-centric part, that he was where the title came from. Yeah. As you can see, sometimes I just don't think about (obvious) things & then it hits me. & I feel stupid. XD

The responses to this secret are making me smile. Here's my contribution: it took me at least ten years to realise that, by 'banging on the bathroom floor', the singer Shaggy did not mean that he and his ladyfriend were hitting the floor of the bathroom with their fists.
