For a second I thought that robot was Max the bartender (from Coffezilla's videos).

I’m just not that kind of righteous judge. I have my moral standard about not hurting people, and people come up with all sorts of other moral standards so they can stand in righteous judgment of people who use A.I. or read fetish porn or eat left-handed or whatever the fuck, and I go “that’s overcomplicated. I’ll stick with my one standard about not hurting people.”

(Anonymous) 2024-06-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's complicated. :(

I think AI has really interesting artistic applications. There are ethical issues such as art theft and copying, and the impact of AI on various industries, but I agree that the technology itself can be used in creative and helpful ways.

Yeah, one of my friends who works in graphic design actually really loves AI (she does stuff like designing logos/signs for people) because it has in fact made her job much easier. These days she gets a lot of people bringing in AI-generated logos and saying stuff like "could you make something that combines this element from this one with that element from that one?" which makes it that much easier for her to come up with something that fits what the customer wants without needing huge amounts of back-and-forth.

I've seen it used for concept reference in a similar way to photobashing and vision boards for interior design, which is really cool to me.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-26 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Seems like the only legit use for it, but they're pushing for it to do more than that-- and as mentioned elsewhere, the resource (ab)use by AI is bad. Maybe even worse than cryptocurrency.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-26 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely a legitimate concern, and a troubling one. Is it unique among art tools in that way? Genuine question, I can see how it would be since it is so resource heavy and can be used so widely and quickly. I'm not sure how that compares to other industry tools. I admit to not knowing a lot about the science behind AI.

For me, even if I could look past all the other concerns, the environmental impact of AI is reason enough to reject it wholesale. No creative artform is worth pissing away reservoirs of water and exacerbating climate failure.

i see chatgpt used even by the most veteran people in my work field, given the garbage fire that google has become and when they need ideas or templates to go, on top of the fact it's free. for a lot of people, it's simply not on their minds, especially if they need something done quick.

one of the possibilities i've read about this issue, is that the cost of AI is passed onto the company as a tax, and then to the user. you want to create an image and spend all of that processing power and water? fine, but you, the user, are paying everything that water costs, which is money the company has to pay to the town whose water is being used.

apparently towns are becoming hesitant as all hell to house anything regarding ai for the water they need, so it's the only case in which enshittification that may actually help people instead of ruining things.

and that's not even getting into the whole copyright mess, which is something openai is being put over the coals for.

People keep saying the reason data centers use so much energy is because of AI, but they’ve been energy hogs since before it really took off: https://arstechnica.com/ai/2024/06/is-generative-ai-really-going-to-wreak-havoc-on-the-power-grid/

I played with some of the early generative image AIs five years or so ago and they were a ton of fun too! They didn't produce things that looked like they'd come out of Google Image Search, but that's because they hadn't illegally scraped Google Image Search, and honestly it was more fun to see the slightly-uncanny-valley stuff. (I've tried the new ones a few times when there's a very specific photoreference I need and none of the image searches or photobanks are getting me anything like it... and the image generators can't get those either.)

Artist as well here! And... I feel very similarly with ChatGPT. I mostly try to stay away from AI in general but... I tried it and can see where the fun is with talking to it or Character.AI. That's why I don't like to act too badly with people using it casually, it just feels like being mad at people who travel by plane in the economy class for emissions.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-26 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've never used chatgpt, never mind Character.AI, but I've seen some people post screenshots of their conversations with their "faves", and it seems... bad. At best the characters have been severely Flanderized, at worst entirely OOC. I assume the llm pulls mainly from fanfic, which is a crapshoot, and things like incorrect quote blogs, and talking to that kinda amalgamation of bad character takes is so far from what I would consider a good time.

ayrt

Oh yeah, never said they did a good job. One of my attempts was being curious how it roleplayed, and it was very meh. But still, I can see how it can be fun, like watching a bad but fun movie, "turning your brain off" kind of thing.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-26 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think this is reasonable? Gen AI is not good for artists' processes or their livelihoods, and it sucks that people constantly try to pass AI art off as "I made this" (not to mention all the people using deepfake AI art for clickbait and to spread misinformation). That said, it IS a fun technology and there IS a kind of silly, creative expression involved in generating art this way. There's definitely a bit of "at what cost" to the technology and using it, but fundamentally, it's a fun and creative technology, albeit one that I don't think has as much of a "business use case" as business execs seem to think it does (and thinking that it does is hella damaging for artists)... To me, the personal, for-fun use case is where it shines.

(Anonymous) 2024-06-26 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
I am an artist and played with it because of course I am curious. It was fun. And I do think it can have applications. But now it is tainted to hell and back soo

(Anonymous) 2024-06-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Artist here. I have used AI to get into an image I cannot picture even if I have tons of references, practice and all. Of course I'm not going to upload it, but they have helped me with tons of "what if...".

If only people use it for fun and not like OP says.
