It's probably the combination of shitty art style and large, obnoxiously rabid fandom.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Bingo. Hazbin is up my alley in terms of subject matter and the, but I just can't stand the art style.

Sorry, and the premise.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it’s the out of nowhere rabid fandom. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen the art style because I’ve only seen things posted in secrets here. I’m not sure if it’s fanart or not.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the artstyles are kind of polar opposites for the most part- thin, dark and hot-topic edgy vs. round, light and cotton candy pastel. But they're both very stylised so they do appear kind of similar despite being such opposites.

Redeem everyone you possibly can?

OP

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That is definitely a part of it, yes.

That Charlie is forced to confront the fact that some people won't get redeemed, while Steven wasn't is an obvious difference, of course. But not one, for clarity, that I think makes one better than the other.

Probably their hideous art styles. Can't believe someone managed to produce a show that's uglier than Steven Universe.

They're both shows with majority queer casts made by queer creators who've amassed a weirdly passionate hatedom that's convinced their popularity is proof the animation industry is creatively bankrupt?

Also, musicals.

OP

(Anonymous) 2024-08-17 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The first is definitely a similarity, and an annoying one, being a fan of both. I knew I was going to get comments from the hatedom with the secret, but I bit the bullet and posted, anyway. But I don't think it was part of why they got linked in my head.

Funnily enough, though, I think, while it is far more generic of a similarity, the musical thing *is* part of it. Because I feel more of a similarity in the music of the two shows than in most other musicals. I can't pinpoint why, aside from Out For Love and Do It For Him/Her having very similar themes and Velvette's voice sounding similar to Garnet's, only higher pitched, so Respectless and Made of Love feel similar, despite being completely different thematically, and only very vaguely similar musically. But it is there.

+10, Bingo.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, lol, what the fuck is up with this hatedom? the show is not the best, sure, but it's pretty innocuous and well produced overall.
it seems like shows aimed at primarily queer people can't catch a break. it's fucking exhausting.

(btw I ended up dropping the show after one episode because it's not for me and guess what??? totally fine. not everything has to be to my liking. love that people are having fun in the fandom. some pretty talented artists in there)

How am I supposed to give a fuck if they have queer creators if the art style is ugly? Plenty of queer stories can exist without ugly art.

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2024-08-18 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
TBH as someone on twitter I find the hatedom more annoying and rabid They're constantly talking about a show they hate and coming up with stupid reasons it's the worst and the fans are the worst and it shouldn't exist, and a lot of people in the fandom just kinda.. idk enjoying a thing Maybe I'm biased but idk

There's a lot of shows I hate but I just don't waste energy talking about them so much. *shrug*

It's not so much "how dare they hate it" or anything but it's like...

YES we understand you hate it PLEASE give it a rest already

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
1000+, There was a time SU fandom really was like that, but it has mellowed out considerably. I haven't seen Hazbin fandom be particularly annoying, but I've seen a lot of 26-30+ y.o. that are always looking for a reason to say anything coming from the creator is the worst and most bigoted thing to exist.

IT'S BECAUSE THEY'RE BOTH ARTISTIC DESCENDANTS OF HOMESTUCK

for good and for bad, they are siblings, grown from the same creative forebears.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 02:01 am (UTC)(link)

I don't go to Hazbin, but
*looks at Steven Universe*
... You've cursed me, I can't unsee it.

probably because they both attracted a large following of both queer people and also people that feel the need to make every single one of their interests into a moral crusade, and when those two groups intertwine it becomes the most maddeningly infuriating thing one could possibly witness online

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's because "people that feel the need to make every single one of their interests into a moral crusade" is basically the modern definition of "queer."

Most of the people I know who identify as queer are gender-conforming straight people (yeah, yeah, they say they think the same sex is hot, but they only ever manage to date people of the opposite sex, even when opportunities to date the same sex are readily available). They're just really vocal about how everyone who doesn't agree with them on everything is a bad person.

I’ve seen this on tumblr a lot. I never know WTF to do with these people. You can’t placate them, and they just neeeeed everybody to agree with them.

If you don’t agree with the crusaders, it’s excommunication, shunning, or perpetual harassment.
