Agree on the first part, a little less convinced about the second.
Are cheat codes a thing still? I haven’t played a game with them in a very long time. The games from the last years that I’m familiar with don't have codes but it is possible to hack them and steal premium content. Cheat codes a la 2004 are fine but hacking and stealing are big no from me.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Easy mode is fine, but cheat codes are literally cheating. Like, it's right there in the name. Use them if you want, but acknowledge that you did in fact cheat at the game.

DA

I think it's arguable whether cheating even matters in a single player game; nobody is saying it's not cheating, OP is saying it's not "wrong."

And I guess it doesn't hurt anyone else's experience, so have at? Ofc this applies to strictly single player games only for obvious reasons.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
See, my problem is OP trying to compare cheating to playing a game on Easy mode, because the two aren't the same thing. Easy mode is playing a game the way it was intended utilizing an option that the developers put into the game (difficulty levels) in order to make it the most fun for you. There is nothing wrong in the slightest with playing a game using options that are provided to you in the game itself.

Using cheat codes is where it gets muddier, because technically that IS "wrong" in the sense that you're altering the game rather than just choosing a different option in the game. You really can't compare the two things at all.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Can you tell us what sort of "wrong" it is? Morally? Ethically?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think that depends on what is meant with cheat codes. I think of cheat codes a la "rosebud", which was in the official The Sims guidebook.

And at the end of the day, if it's only your own gaming experience you're altering, who gives a shit? You bought the game, you get to play it however you want. If you want to play it with infinite money, sure, why not?

Who care

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I imagine people who watch other people's solitaire games to make sure they aren't hitting the 'undo' button too much. On principle

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the second commenter is exactly that kind of pedant. I’m so annoyed with myself that I fell for it and fed the troll all evening.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
some cheat codes are literally the Easiest Game Mode tho? like, there are games where godmode is the only easy way to experience the story of the game. there are some games that do have a Story mode or a No Deaths modes for that purpose exactly, I don't see why cheats that do that couldn't count as such.

shout out to Hades literally having a God Mode as an easy mode, it saved my life and is one of the reasons I love this game so much. so thoughtful for us losers ♥

NA

Ohhh, it does? I bought it in a moment of madness after seeing a streamer play it, before remembering that I suck at games and can't play games like that lol

I haven't even opened the game once because I didn't want to deal with the frustration.

We don’t actually agree. I’m cool with cheat codes. They’re built in for a reason and whether the player discovers them for themselves or gets them from an outside source, they’re meant to be used by anyone who wants to use them.
But I’m not aware of any cheat codes existing in modern games. And usually when anyone talks about cheat codes for games now, it’s shorthand for hacking, which is not the same thing at all. In the case of hacking, it’s to bypass paywalls and get free access to paid content. And if that’s what the OP means, then I think they really suck.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
But people hack single player games to give themselves unlimited resources and play at 2x speeds or whatever all the time?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hack or mod? Or command console? Command console is not cheating, it’s the PC version of cheat codes. Mods are also not cheating; they create a different gameplay.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you'll have to define what you mean by "hack" because if you don't mean "any method where you go into the game code/files/saves/etc and change it" then you'll need to be more specific.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So an 'infinite gold mod' is not cheating, just different gameplay?

Like Stardew Valley is one of the most hackable and moddable games and people actively do this daily for infinite gold or items, are people crying about this being morally wrong somewhere?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
People hack single player games to avoid micro transactions same as mmos. The shorthand for that is cheat codes.

They mod or use command console to get in game resources (that are already free) faster. The shorthand for that is mods or CC.

They're really not a thing since achievements / trophies

(Anonymous) 2024-08-18 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I always love this "controversy" because it implies that beating a game on normal or hard mode is something of "value". It isn't. It's just entertainment in the end. (entertainment for the sake sake of entertainment has a value, of course. In this context I mean that it's seen as "valuable skill")
It has value only when put into a PvP context, when you are playing against another human being on the same ground.
Against the computer? Who cares? It's your game. Do whatever makes you enjoy the game more. At the end it doesn't really matter.

I'm all for easy mode and cheat codes for every game! I mod my games all the time to make the experience more enjoyable to me.
Like, am I supposed to be impressed you beat that game on the hardest difficulty? I am not and never will.

Dead Space is my favourite game and I replay it multiple times a year. I put it in the hardest difficulty mode and I also have mods that make it even harder for me. I don't do it to impress other people. I do it because I enjoy that game when it's hard as hell and I risk death every 5 seconds. I will never be offended if someone decide to use cheats to beat that game. It's their business.
I will never understand Souls fans (because let's be real it's usually those people) going vocally against the implementation of an easy mode. Dude, maybe some people just want to enjoy the panorama and cool monsters and hate the combat system??? Let them play in peace!!! WHO CARES

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ha ha I was just coming to post a similar rant! I think cheat codes are an example of human ingenuity, and if you want to use them, you should. If you don't, don't! The game is meant to be enjoyable and interesting to the player, and since players differ, their experiences are going to differ, too. You like to put Dead Space on hard, I would die in 5 seconds. Also, I have problems with flashing lights, so being able to mod those out is necessary for me to play some games at all.

Stardew Valley is my favourite example of this, where modding is a fun experience of its own.

I miss the time when game magazines would have freebie books of cheat codes for games, and when you could use them to skip levels or get infinite ammo or unlimited currency (or stupid things like inflating boobs for Lara Croft).

It was less "I'm going to use these to get an undeserved achievement" than it was "this is my game so I'm playing with it in a way that makes it fun for me". The Sims was so, so fun for me because I had a cheat for endless money - the times I tried playing without it I got bored.

I was young enough that the point of a videogame, for me, was to be fun to play with, like any other toy. A game I wasn't having fun with was a dull toy, and cheats were just part of the way a dull toy could be made fun again.

The fun part about cheat codes was looking for/finding them! I used to have to search random forums and websites to get cheat codes to allow Link to get access to a special flute that could summon a mythical beast. That kind of thing. Things you wouldn't have known and opened up other parts of the game if you figured it out.

Like the comments above me, it's your game, play it the way that's the most fun for you.
